Surface modified rice husk ceramic particles as a functional additive: Improving the tribological behaviour of aluminium matrix composites

  • An electroless deposition method was used to modify the surface properties of rice husk ceramic particles (RHC) by depositing nano-nickel on the surface of the RHC (Ni-RHC). The dry tribological performances of aluminum matrix composite adobes containing different contents of RHC and Ni-RHC particles have been investigated using a micro-tribometer. Results showed that the Ni-RHC particles substantially improved both the friction and wear properties of the Ni-RHC/aluminum matrix adobes. The optimal concentration was determined to be 15 wt% for both the RHC and Ni-RHC particles. The improvements in the tribological properties of aluminum adobes including the Ni-RHC were ascribed to friction-induced peeling off of Ni coating and formation of protection layer on the wear zone, both of which led to low friction and wear volume.

  • In this paper, a new looper controller is proposed to minimize the tension variation of a strip in the hot strip finishing mill. The proposed control technology is based on a receding horizon control (RHC) to satisfy the constraints on the control input/state variables. The finite terminal weighting matrix is used instead of the terminal equality constraint. The closed loop stability of the RHC for the looper system is analyzed to guarantee the monotonicity of the optimal cost. Furthermore, the RHC is combined with a 4SID(Subspace-based State Space System Identification) model identifier to improve the robustness for the parameter variation and the disturbance of an actuator. As a result, it is shown through a computer simulation that the proposed control scheme satisfies the given constraints on the control inputs and states: roll speed, looper current, unit tension, and looper angle. The control scheme also diminishes the tension variation for the parameter variation and the disturbance as well.

Numerical analysis of the seismic performance of RHC-PVCT short columns

  • This paper presents the results of cyclic loading tests on new high-strength concrete (HC) short columns. The seismic performance and deformation capacity of three reinforced high-strength concrete filled Polyvinyl Chloride tube (RHC-PVCT) short columns and one reinforced high-strength concrete (RHC), under pseudo-static tests (PSTs) with vertical axial force was evaluated. The main design parameters of the columns in the tests were the axial compression ratio, confinement type, concrete strength, height-diameter ratio of PVCT. The failure modes, hysteretic curves, skeleton curves of short columns were presented and analyzed. Placing PVCT in the RHC column could be remarkably improved the ultimate strength and energy dissipation of columns. However, no fiber element models have been formulated for computing the seismic responses of RHC-PVCT columns with PVT tubes filled with high-strength concrete. Nonlinear finite element method (FEM) was conducted to predict seismic behaviors. Finite element models were verified through a comparison of FEM results with experimental results. A parametric study was then performed using validated FEM models to investigate the effect of several parameters on the mechanical properties of RHC-PVCT short columns. The parameters study indicated that the concrete strength and the ratio of diameter to height affected the seismic performance of RHC-PVCT short column significantly.

  • This paper describes the design of size-reduced ring hybrid couplers (RHC) using a common defected ground structure (CDGS). The proposed RHC consists of double-sided microstrip line and the CDGS patterns which are placed in the common ground plane of the double-sided microstrip line. The effects of DGS as a periodic structure are imposed on both microstrip lines, so the advantages of the existing DGS are doubled. The normal RHC is designed first and folded by the half reference plane with the CDGS realized on the common ground plane. So another trial for size-reduction is performed by folding the RHC and inserting CDGS besides to the conventional DGS. In order to show a design example, a 2GHz RHC is designed and miniaturized using CDGS. The size of the miniaturized RHS is around 50% of the normal one, while the performances are well preserved even after the size-reduction.

  • This paper proposes an improved implementation algorithm for the continuous-time receding horizon control (RHC). The proposed algorithm has a feature that it has better control performance than the existing algorithm. Main idea of the proposed algorithm is that we can approximate the original RHC problem better by assuming the predicted input trajectory on the prediction horizon has a continuous form, which is constructed from linear interpolation of finite number of vectors. This, in turn, leads to improved control performance. We derive a predictor such that it takes linear interpolation into account and proposes the method by which we can express the cost exactly. Through simulation study fur an inverted pendulum, we illustrate that the proposed algorithm has the better control performance than the existing one.

  • We present a receding horizon control [RHC] algorithm for compensation of backlash at the input of a stable linear system under control rate constraints. The problem is posed as a receding horizon optimal control [RHOptC] problem for a piecewise affine [PWA] system by modelling the backlash nonlinearity as a PWA system with a state space partition consisting of three regions. The RHC problem involves solving, at each step, $3^N$ quadratic programmes[QP], where N is the optimization horizon. This strategy leads, at the cost of some performance degradation, to much smaller computational load since a feasible rather than optimal solution has to be obtained at each step.

  • Background: Various treatments are used to relieve menopausal symptoms for women. However, herbal substances are frequently used as complementary and alternative therapies as other treatments can increase ovarian and breast cancer risk. While the herbal substances' therapeutic effect is essential, the safety of their use is considered more important. This study aims to confirm the safety of red ginseng and herb extract complex (RHC), which are used to relieve menopausal symptoms. Methods: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study recruited and divided 120 women experiencing menopausal symptoms into the RHC and placebo groups (60 women per group). Subjects were administered with 2 g RHC or placebo daily for 12 wk. Adverse reactions, female hormonal changes, and uterine thickness were observed and recorded on wk 0, 6, and 12. Hematologic and blood chemistry tests were also conducted. Results: The reactions of the subjects who received RHC or placebo at least once were analyzed. A total of six adverse reactions occurred in the RHC group, while nine occurred in the placebo group; common reactions observed in both groups were genital, subcutaneous tissue, and vascular disorders. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the administration groups (p = 0.5695), and no severe adverse reactions occurred in both groups.
