The natural ecology of our coastal zone has been well preserved because of the designation of Han-Ryea national sea park. However, recently, it is being threatened by the frequent request of district regulation of national park and relaxation of green belt, etc. And also, with the reclamation of the foreshore by the development of industrial complex and tourism resource cultivation on a large scale, development pressure for natural coast is increasing. For that reason, preservation of the ecology, organized management and investigation is needed for the islands which scenery is beautiful and rare animals and plants inhabit. And also, it is worried that major habitats of migrants are diminishing because of the district regulation of national park, relaxation of green belt zone and construction of coastal streets. Therefore. on the basis of the through environmental impact assessment, only the business which are aimed at the preservation and restoration of the natural coast should be admitted and the act of eroding must be restricted.
This study aims to analyze the effect of urban ecosystem restoration projects by evaluating the short-term restoration performance of the project sites, from both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. In this study, for the qualitative evaluation, we derived the evaluation frame from previous studies and literature. For the quantitative evaluation, the changes in ecological connectivity after the restoration project were described using landscape permeability and network analysis. In addition, changes in habitat quality after the restoration project were evaluated by using InVEST Habitat Quality Model. These evaluations were applied to the three natural madang (ecological restoration) projects and two ecosystem conservation cooperation projects. As a result, three categories, 10 indicators, and 13 sub-indicators were derived from literature as the evaluation frame for this study. In the case of quantitative evaluation of restoration performance, habitat quality increased by 45% and ecological connectivity by 37% in natural-madang, and habitat quality by about 12% and ecological connectivity by about 19% in ecosystem conservation cooperation projects. This implies that the ecological restoration project can increase the ecological connectivity and the habitat quality of degraded sites even in a short period of time by improving the land-cover and land use. The results by applying the evaluation frame indicated that ecological and environmental factors and the ecological functions were improved by the restoration works, even though the magnitude of performances were diverse depending on the specific evaluation items, project type, and site characteristics. This study clarified that the success of ecological restoration project should be assessed by both of the short-term and long-term goals, which can be achieved by the maintenance and sustainable management, respectively.
This study estimated the carbon sequestration from urban green spaces in Ansan City using environmental spatial information. We examined study results of carbon sequestration from existing urban green spaces, using a land cover map (level 3). In particular, the carbon sequestration of trees by land use and the IPCC Global default value were linked with the land cover map level 3. Domestic research showed that carbon storage in urban green spaces in Ansan City was 17,927.2 tC, and the annual carbon sequestration was calculated as 2,680.5 tC/yr. On the other hand, applying the IPCC Global Default value resulted in annual carbon sequestration of 5,287.8 tC/yr, which was 2,607.3 tC/yr more that the domestic research value. This resulted from difference in detailed methodologies such as background data, sample size for on-site investigation, and measurement of tree species. The study presented a consistent assessment method to assess the sequestration of carbon from municipal urban green spaces. Furthermore, we provided basic data that could be useful in urban green space policies.
Background: Artificial light at night has recently been identified as a major factor adversely affecting global insect diversity. Here, we compared the insect diversity in Gwangneung Forest Biosphere Reserve, specifically in the Korea National Arboretum (with no artificial light at night), with that of three nearby urban sites with a gradient of artificial light at night (five locations at each site). We analyzed the effects of the artificial night lighting index, mean annual temperature, and field light intensity (lux) at night on the insect community structure. Results: The urban sites generally exhibited higher species richness and abundance as well as clear indicator species compared with the control site. The size distribution of the collected insects markedly differed between the control and the three urban sites. The abundance of herbivorous and omnivorous insects increased and decreased, respectively, with the increase in light intensity. Species richness of herbivorous and omnivorous insects was likely correlated with the field light intensity at night and artificial night lighting index, respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the association between nighttime environment and marked changes in insect community structure and revealed consequent transition of ecosystem services by changes in trophic group composition.
