  • A soil-structure interaction (SSI) experiment is being conducted in a seismically active region in Hualien, Taiwan. To obtain earthquake data for quantifying SSI effects and providing a basis to benchmark analysis methods, a 1/4-th scale cylindrical concrete containment model similar in shape to that of a nuclear power plant containment was constructed in the field where both the containment model and its surrounding soil, surface and sub-surface, are extensively instrumented to record earthquake data. In between September 1993 and May 1996, fifteen earthquakes with Richter magnitudes ranging from 4.2 to 6.2 were recorded. The recorded data were analyzed to provide information on the response characteristics of the Hualien soil-structure system, the SSI effects and the ground motion characteristics. The ground response data were analyzed for their variations with depth, with distance from the model structure, and at the same depths along downhole arrays. Variations of soil stiffness and soil-structure system frequencies were also evaluated against maximum ground motion. In addition, the site soil properties were derived based on correlation analysis of the recorded data and then correlated with those from the geotechnical investigation data.

  • The 『Hun-Gai-Tong-Xian-Tushuo 渾蓋通憲圖說』, which was an important astronomical book in East-Asia, was published by Li Zhi-zao (李之藻, 1565-1631) in 1607. This book was including the data of stars. We analyzed the data of stars recorded in 『Hun-Gai-Tong-Xian-Tushuo 渾蓋通憲圖說』. Based on historical background, we assumed that the data of stars recorded in 『Hun-Gai-Tong-Xian-Tushuo 渾蓋通憲圖說』 likely referenced knowledge from the ancient Arab/Islam culture. In conclusion, we assume a correlation with the star catalogue included in 『Almagest』 by Ptolemaios. Therefore, we think that this star's data will become important data for comparison with the star catalogues published in Arabic/Islam.

  • For estimating the minimum discharge to maintain a river, low flow analysis is required and long term runoff records are needed for the analysis. However, runoff data should be estimated to run a hydrologic model for ungaged river basin. For the reason, parameter estimation is crucial to simulate rainfall-runoff events for those basins using Tank model. In this study, only runoff data recorded for dry season are used for parameter estimation, which is different to other methods based on runoff data recorded for wet and dry seasons. The Harmony Search algorithm is used to determine the optimum parameters for Tank model. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) is served as the objective function in the Harmony Search. In cases that recorded data are insufficient, the recording interval is changed and Empirical CDF is adopted to analyze the estimated parameters. The suggested method is applied to Yongdam dam, Soyanggang dam, Chungju dam and Seomjingang dam basins. As results, the higher $R^2s$ are obtained when the shorter recording interval, the better recorded data quality, and the more rainfall events recorded along with certain rainfall amount is. Moreover, when the total rainfall is higher than the certain amount, $R^2$ is high. Considering the facts found from this study for the low flow analysis, it is possible to estimate the parameters for Tank model properly with the desired confidence level.

  • In this paper the potential of the Principle Component Analysis(PCA) technique that can be used to detect leaks in water pipe network blocks was evaluated. For this purpose the PCA was conducted to evaluate the relevance of the calculated outliers of a PCA model utilizing the recorded pipe flows and the recorded pipe leak incidents of a case study water distribution system. The PCA technique was enhanced by applying the computational algorithms developed in this study. The algorithms were designed to extract a partial set of flow data from the original 24 hour flow data so that the variability of the flows in the determined partial data set are minimal. The relevance of the calculated outliers of a PCA model and the recorded pipe leak incidents was analyzed. The results showed that the effectiveness of detecting leaks may improve by applying the developed algorithm. However, the analysis suggested that further development on the algorithm is needed to enhance the applicability of the PCA in detecting leaks in real-world water pipe networks.

  • The Xinfa Suanshu, which was an important astronomical book in East-Asia, was published in 1644. This book was including the star catalogue. We researched the data of 1365 stars recorded in this star catalogue (the equinox of the catalogue is identified to be 1628 year). According to our analysis, it can be presumed that the star catalogue's data were observed from at least two places or more. Based on historical background, we assumed that the Xinfa Sunashu's catalogue likely referenced knowledge from the Europe or Arab/Islamic culture. The researchers who have studied the Xinfa Sunashu's star catalogue have all focused on Brahe's star catalogue. But they did not provide clear evidence. Therefore, we are compared with the star data recorded in Tablae Rudolphinae. In conclusion, we confirmed that 881 stars among the 1365 stars were perfectly edited from position data of stars recorded in Brahe's star catalogue (1602).

  • The soil-structure interaction(SSI) analysis is essential to soil site where shear wave velocity is less than 1,050 m/sec and soil nonlinear characteristics for this kind of soil site have to be considered in SSI analysis. In order to consider soil nonlinear characteristics in the SSI analysis, simple and reliable soil nonlinear evaluation technique with seismic recorded data at downhole array is proposed in this study. The SSI analysis is carried out in order to prove the reliability of the proposed evaluation technique with Hualien large scale seismic test(HLSST) site in Taiwan. The analytical result are compared with Hualien earthquake recorded data and the analytical results with SHAKE program which is prevailed at present. As a result, the proposed evaluation technique shows a good agreement with both the Hualien earthquake recorded data and the analytical result with SHAKE program and the reliability and usefulness are confirmed.

  • A catchment modelling system is the summation of the numerous hydrologic, hydraulic and other process models necessary to simulate the response of a catchment to a storm event. Differences between the recorded catchment response and that predicted by a catchment modelling system can arise from structural errors within the catchment modelling system, evaluation errors in the control parameters, or measurement errors in the recorded data being used to assess the reliability of the evaluation of the control parameters. Presented herein is an investigation of the potential measurement errors within the recorded information, which was considered to occur from instrument error in the ultra sonic flow monitor. This investigation was undertaken using three available rating curves at the Musgrave Avenue Stormwater System in Centennial Park, Sydney, developed by Abustan (1997), Water Board (1994), and using Manning's equation.

  • This paper deals with a voltage sag assessment based on a voltage monitoring program. The voltage sag performance at a specific site can be evaluated by analyzing voltage monitoring data recorded for a long time period. Although an assessment based on voltage monitoring is an effective way to understand voltage sag performance at a measurement site, the statistical confidence of voltage sag frequency estimation heavily depends on the length of monitoring period and the number of recorded events. Short monitoring period and insufficient recorded data can not provide a reliable assessment result. This paper proposes a compensation assessment method by combining a computer simulation approach for in case that monitoring period and data are not enough for a valid assessment.

  • Background: Species in the heterokont genus Synura are colonial and have silica scales whose ultrastructural characteristics are used for classification. We examined the ultrastructure of silica scales and molecular data (nuclear SSU rDNA and LSU rDNA, and plastid rbcL sequences) to better understand the taxonomy and phylogeny within the section Petersenianae of genus Synura. In addition, we report the first finding of newly recorded Synura species from Korea. Results: We identified all species by examination of scale ultrastructure using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Three newly recorded species from Korea, Synura americana, Synura conopea, and Synura truttae were described based on morphological characters, such as cell size, scale shape, scale size, keel shape, number of struts, distance between struts, degree of interconnections between struts, size of base plate pores, keel pores, base plate hole, and posterior rim. The scales of the newly recorded species, which belong to the section Petersenianae, have a well-developed keel and a characteristic number of struts on the base plate. We performed molecular phylogenetic analyses based on sequence data from three genes in 32 strains (including three outgroup species). The results provided strong statistical support that the section Petersenianae was monophyletic, and that all taxa within this section had well-developed keels and a defined number of struts on the base plate. Conclusions: The phylogenetic tree based on sequence data of three genes was congruent with the data on scale ultrastructure. The resulting phylogenetic tree strongly supported the existence of the section Petersenianae. In addition, we propose newly recorded Synura species from Korea based on phylogenetic analyses and morphological characters: S. americana, S. conopea, and S. truttae.
