In RC structure, sufficient anchorage of reinforcement is necessary for the member to produce the full strength. Generally, conventional standard hook is used for the reinforcement's anchorage. However, the use of standard hook results in steel congestion, making fabrication and construction difficult. Mechanical anchor offers a potential solution to these problems and may also ease fabrication, construction and concrete placement. In this paper, the required characteristics and the design considerations of mechanical anchor were studied. Also, the mechanical anchor was designed according to the requirements. To investigate the pull-out behavior and properness of mechanical anchorage, pull-out tests were performed. The parameters of tests were embedment length, diameter of reinforcement, concrete compressive strength, and spacing of reinforcements. The strengths of mechanical anchor were consistent with the predictions by CCD method. The slip between mechanical anchor and concrete could be controlled under 0.2mm. Therefore, the mechanical anchor with adequate embedment could be used for reinforcement's anchorage. However, it was observed that the strength of mechanical anchors with short spacing of reinforcements was greatly reduced. To apply the mechanical anchor in practice (e.g. anchorage of the beams reinforcements in beam-column joint), other effects that affect the mechanical anchor mechanism, such as confinement effect of adjacent member from frame action or effects of shear reinforcement, should be considered.

Five half-scale beam-to-column connections in a precast concrete frame were tested with cyclic loading that simulated earthquake-type motions. Five half -scale interior beam-column assemblies representing a portion of a frame subjected to simulated seismic loading were tested, including one monolithic specimen and four precast specimens. Variables included the detailing used at the joint to achieve a structural continuity of the beam reinforcement, and the type of special reinforcement in the connection (whether ECC or transverse reinforcement). The specimen design followed the strong-column-weak-beam concept. The beam reinforcement was purposely designed and detailed to develop plastic hinges at the beam and to impose large inelastic shear force demands into the joint. The joint performance was evaluated on the basis of connection strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, and drift capacity. From the test results, the plastic hinges at the beam controlled the specimen failure. In general, the performance of the beam-to-column connections was satisfactory. The joint strength was 1.15 times of that expected for monolithic reinforced concrete construction. The specimen behavior was ductile due to tensile deformability by ECC and the yielding steel plate, while the strength was nearly constant up to a drift of 3.5 percent.
In order to improve the workability in erecting Precast Concrete (PC) members and enhance the seismic resistance capacity of the joints in PC moment frames, a new PC column and its construction process are introduced in this paper. This column is manufactured by centrifugal force in keeping the hollow tube inside; the hollow is little bit wide and the grout can be poured from top to bottom after erection at site so that more compact grouting is possible in horizontal joint. The repeated cyclic loading test for four full scaled specimens was conducted to evaluate the seismic resistance capacity of the joint designed by the proposed system. For the continuity of main reinforcements in column, two connecting methods are used in designing specimens; one is to use mechanical connector and other is lab splice. From the cyclic lateral loading test, it was found that the seismic capacity of the developed PC column joint is comparable to that of monolithic joint.

In this paper, a model updating procedure based on the response surface method combined with the multi-objective optimization was proposed and applied for updating of the FE models representing a low-rise reinforced concrete building before and after the seismic retrofit. The dynamic properties to be matched were obtained from vibration tests using a small shaker system. By varying the structural parameters according to the central composite design, analysis results from the initial FE model using a commercial software were collected and used to produce two regression functions each of which representing the errors in the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The two functions were used as the objective functions for multi-objective optimization. Final solution was determined by examining the Pareto solutions with one iteration. The parameters representing the stiffnesses of existing concrete, masonry, connection stiffness in expansion joint, new concrete, retrofitted members with steel section jacketing were selected and identified.

This study presents a reliability-based optimum design of reinforced concrete frames, in which the AFOSM and SOSM methods are applied for the evaluation of the failure probabilities, and the sequential linear programming method is used as a practical approach to the system optimization. One-story two-bay reinforced concrete frame is chosen for the numerical illustration of the proposed reliability-based optimum design. As a result, it is found that the proposed procedure for the reliability-based optimization of RC frames could provide the accurate estimation of the optimal level of safety, and appears applicable to real structures with reasonable complexity. It is shown in the paper that the probability distributions of the basic random variables and the uncertainties of the applied loadings and material strengths may have great effect on the optimum design, but the AFOSM and SOSM methods do not show significant discrepancy in the optimum design results, but the former appears more realistic and time saving than the latter for this specific study.

In this study, the seismic performance of the Buckling Restrained Knee Bracing (BRKB) system was evaluated through a pin-connected one-bay, one-story frame. The BRKB system developed in this study was composed of a steel plate as a load-resisting core member and two channel sections to restrain local and global buckling of the core plate. The main purpose of the BRKB system is to restrengthen/rehabilitate old low- and mid-rise RC buildings, which, it is assumed, were designed with non-seismic designs and details. The main variables for the test specimens were the size of the core plates and the stiffeners, and the condition of the end plates. The test results showed that the size of the core plate, which was the main element of the load-resisting member, was the most important parameter in achieving a ductile behavior under tension as well as compression until the maximum displacement exceeds twice the design drift limit.

This technology employs a method of forming a single-ply PLUS waterproofing sheet layer comprised of applying a single-ply synthetic polymer layer on a vibrating structure (steel frame, RC) or an inclined surface by using a T joint lap-filling coil and an embedded metal coated sheet. The T - joint reinforcing lap-filling coil was used to block the ingress channel of the rainwater by applying the material in the vulnerable area where the three sides of the waterproof sheet overlapped. Conventional waterproofing techniques have a problem in that the waterproof sheet is pierced because the end portion of the waterproof sheet applied to the vertical portion is fixed by a nail, and the sealant applied to the end portion of the sheet cannot easily secure long-term waterproof durability due to the influence of the external environment. Therefore, the developed technology secured the waterproof durability against the vertical part by using the embedded metal sheet. In addition, automatic hot-air fusing is used to improve the quality of waterproof construction and point fixation method using fixed hardware. This is a technology that is not significantly restricted in the high degradation level regions of domestic waterproof construction environments in Korea such as low-temperature environment, wet floor.
Sweet potatoes (Ipomea batatas L.) are grown extensively, in tropical and temperate regions, and are important food crops worldwide. In Korea, potyviruses, including Sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV), Sweet potato virus C (SPVC), Sweet potato virus G (SPVG), Sweet potato virus 2 (SPV2), and Sweet potato latent virus (SPLV), have been detected in sweet potato fields at a high (~95%) incidence. In the present work, complete genome sequences of 18 isolates, representing the five potyviruses mentioned above, were compared with previously reported genome sequences. The complete genomes consisted of 10,081 to 10,830 nucleotides, excluding the poly-A tails. Their genomic organizations were typical of the Potyvirus genus, including one target open reading frame coding for a putative polyprotein. Based on phylogenetic analyses and sequence comparisons, the Korean SPFMV isolates belonged to the strains RC and O with >98% nucleotide sequence identity. Korean SPVC isolates had 99% identity to the Japanese isolate SPVC-Bungo and 70% identity to the SPFMV isolates. The Korean SPVG isolates showed 99% identity to the three previously reported SPVG isolates. Korean SPV2 isolates had 97% identity to the SPV2 GWB-2 isolate from the USA. Korean SPLV isolates had a relatively low (88%) nucleotide sequence identity with the Taiwanese SPLV-TW isolates, and they were phylogenetically distantly related to SPFMV isolates. Recombination analysis revealed that possible recombination events occurred in the P1, HC-Pro and NIa-NIb regions of SPFMV and SPLV isolates and these regions were identified as hotspots for recombination in the sweet potato potyviruses.
This paper describes experimental results on the seismic performance of SHCC (strain-hardening cement composite) infill wall for improving damage tolerance capacity of non-ductile frame. To investigate the effect of tensile strain capacity and cracking behavior of SHCC materials on the shear behavior of SHCC infill wall, three infill walls were fabricated and tested under cyclic loading. The test parameter in this study is a type of cement composites; concrete and SHCCs. The two types of SHCC materials were prepared for infill walls. In order to induce crack damages into the mid-span of the infill wall, each infill wall had two 100-mm-deep-notches on both sides. Test results indicated that SHCC infill walls showed superior crack control capacities and much larger drift ratios at the peak loads than RC (reinforced concrete) infill wall, as expected. In particular, due to the bridging actions of the reinforcing fibers, SHCC matrix used in this study would delay the stiffness degradation of infill wall after the first inclined cracking. Moreover, from the damage classes based on the cracks' maximum width in the infill walls, it was observed that PIW-SHD specimen possessed nearly threefold seismic capacities compared to PIW-SLD specimen. Also, from the results on the strain of diagonal reinforcements, it can be concluded that the SHCC matrix would resist a part of tensile stresses transferred along steel rebar in the infill wall.

The purpose of this study is to develop a new seismic resistant method by using precast concrete wall panels for existing low-rise, reinforced concrete beam-column buildings such as school buildings. Three quasi-static hysteresis loading tests were experimentally performed on one unreinforced beam-column specimen and two reinforced specimens with L-type precast wall panels. The results were analyzed to find that the specimen with anchored connection experienced shear failure, while the other specimen with steel plate connection principally manifested flexural failure. The ultimate strength of the specimens was determined to be the weaker of the shear strength of top connection and flexural strength at the critical section of precast panel. In this setup of L-type panel specimens, if a push loading is applied to the reinforced concrete column on one side and push the precast concrete panel, a pull loading from upper shear connection is to be applied to the other side of the top shear connection of precast panel. Since the composite flexural behavior of the two members govern the total behavior during the push loading process, the ultimate horizontal resistance of this specimen was not directly influenced by shear strength at the top connection of precast panel. However, the RC column and PC wall panel member mainly exhibited non-composite behavior during the pull loading process. The ultimate horizontal resistance was directly influenced by the shear strength of top connection because the pull loading from the beam applied directly to the upper shear connection. The analytical result for the internal shear resistance at the connection pursuant to the anchor shear design of ACI 318M-11 Appendix-D except for the equation to predict the concrete breakout failure strength at the concrete side, principally agreed with the experimental result based on the elastic analysis of Midas-Zen by using the largest loading from experiment.
