Three 3D nonlinear finite-element models are developed to study the behavior of concrete beams and plates with and without external reinforcement by fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP). All three models are formulated based upon the 3D theory of elasticity. The stress model is modified from the element developed by Ramtekkar, et al. (2002) to incorporate material nonlinearity in the formulation. Both transverse stress and displacement components are used as nodal degrees-of-freedom to ensure the continuity of both stress and displacement components between the elements. The displacement model uses only displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom. The transition model has both stress and displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom on one surface, and only displacement components as nodal degrees-of-freedom on the opposite surface. The transition model serves as a connector between the stress and the displacement models. The developed models are validated by comparing the results of the analyses with an existing experimental result. Parametric studies of the effects of the externally reinforced FRP on the load capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and concrete plates are performed to demonstrate the practicality and the efficiency of the proposed models.
Nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is performed by using isogeometric Reissner-Mindlin (RM) shell element. The elasto-plastic constitutive model is employed to express the nonlinear behavior of concrete material and the equivalent smeared steel layer is introduced to represent steel reinforcement. The arc-length control method is used to produce the entire load-displacement path of RC structures. Finally, three benchmark tests are carried out to verify the performance of the present shell element. From isogeometric analysis, the present results show a good agreement with experimental results and it is provided as future benchmark test solutions.

For the large deformation of shear walls under vertical and horizontal loads, there are difficulties in obtaining accurate simulation results using the response analysis method, even with fine mesh elements. Furthermore, concrete material nonlinearity, stiffness degradation, concrete cracking and crushing, and steel bar damage may occur during the large deformation of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls. Matrix operations that are involved in nonlinear analysis using the traditional finite-element method (FEM) may also result in flaws, and may thus lead to serious errors. To solve these problems, a planar four-node element was developed based on vector mechanics. Owing to particle-based formulation along the path element, the method does not require repeated constructions of a global stiffness matrix for the nonlinear behavior of the structure. The nonlinear concrete constitutive model and bilinear steel material model are integrated with the developed element, to ensure that large deformation and damage behavior can be addressed. For verification, simulation analyses were performed to obtain experimental results on an RC shear wall subjected to a monotonically increasing lateral load with a constant vertical load. To appropriately evaluate the parameters, investigations were conducted on the loading speed, meshing dimension, and the damping factor, because vector mechanics is based on the equation of motion. The static problem was then verified to obtain a stable solution by employing a balanced equation of motion. Using the parameters obtained, the simulated pushover response, including the bearing capacity, deformation ability, curvature development, and energy dissipation, were found to be in accordance with the experimental observation. This study demonstrated the potential of the developed planar element for simulating the entire process of large deformation and damage behavior in RC shear walls.
Vector algorithms and the relative importance of the four basic modules (computation of element stiffness matrices, assembly of the global stiffness matrix, solution of the system of linear simultaneous equations, and calculation of stresses and strains) of a finite element computer program for inelastic analysis of reinforced concrete shells are presented. Performance of the vector program is compared with a scalar program. For a cooling tower problem, the speedup factor from the scalar to the vector program is 34 for the element stiffness matrices calculation, 25.3 for the assembly of global stiffness matrix, 27.5 for the equation solver, and 37.8 for stresses, strains and nodal forces computations on a Gray Y-MP. The overall speedup factor is 30.9. When the equation solver alone is vectorized, which is computationally the most intensive part of a finite element program, a speedup factor of only 1.9 is achieved. When the rest of the program is also vectorized, a large additional speedup factor of 15.9 is attained. Therefore, it is very important that all the modules in a nonlinear program are vectorized to gain the full potential of the supercomputers. The vector finite element computer program for inelastic analysis of RC shells with layered elements developed in the present study enabled us to perform mesh convergence studies. The vector program can be used for studying the ultimate behavior of RC shells and used as a design tool.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior and the strength of SRG (Steel Reinforced Grout) externally strengthened Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams by using a nonlinear numerical analysis. The numerical simulation was carried out by using a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model. An interface element with a suitable damage model was used to model the connection between concrete surface and SRG reinforcing layer. The reliability of the finite element 3D-model was checked using experimental data obtained on a set of three RC beams. The parameters taken into consideration were the external configuration, with or without U-end anchorages, the concrete strength, the amount of internal tensile steel reinforcement. Conclusions were made concerning the strength and the ductility of the strengthened beams by varying the parameters and on the effectiveness of the SRG reinforcing system applied with two types of external strengthening configuration.
This paper studies the reliability of an analytical tool for predicting the lateral load-deformation response of RC columns while subjected to lateral cyclic displacements and axial load. The analytical tool in this study is based on a fiber element model implemented into the program DRAIN-2DX (fiber element). The response of RC column under cyclic displacement is defined by the behavior of concrete, and reinforcing steel under general reversed-cyclic loading. A tri-linear stress-strain relationship for the cyclic behavior of steel is proposed and the improvement in the analytical results is studied. This study only considers the behavior of columns with flexural dominant mode of failure. It is concluded that with the implementation of appropriate constitutive material models, the described analytical tools can predict the response of the columns with reasonable accuracy when compared to experimental data.
This paper presents an efficient membrane finite element for the cyclic inelastic response analysis of RC structures under complex plane stress states including shear. The model strikes a balance between accuracy and numerical efficiency to meet the challenge of shear wall simulations in earthquake engineering practice. The concrete material model at the integration points of the finite element is based on damage plasticity with two damage parameters. All reinforcing bars with the same orientation are represented by an embedded orthotropic steel layer based on uniaxial stress-strain relation, so that the dowel and bond-slip effect of the reinforcing steel are presently neglected in the interest of computational efficiency. The model is validated with significant experimental results of the cyclic response of RC panels with uniform stress states.

The objective of this study is to develop finite element analysis technique to predict the strength reduction of deteriorated reinforced concrete beams and their strengthening capacity. In order to consider the effect of rebar corrosion, a tension stiffening model is proposed and area reduction of rebars due to corrosion is considered. For the analysis of strengthened deteriorated RC beams, one dimensional truss element and an interface element are introduced for models of the strengthening composite and the interface between concrete and composite to simulate delamination or discontinuous behavior at the interface. Then, analyses for deteriorated RC beams strengthened with glass fiber reinforced epoxy panel (GFREP) are carried out to predict both flexural failure and plate-end delamination failure. Finally, analysis results are verified with experimental results.
Fire loading causes a critical collapse of RC (Reinforced Concrete) Structures since the embedded steels inside are relative week against high elevated temperature. Several numerical frameworks for fire resistance have been proposed, however they have limitations such as unstable convergence and long calculation period. In the work, 2-D nonlinear FE technique is proposed using Galerkin method for RC structures under fire loading. Closed-form element stiffness with a triangular element is adopted and verified with fire test on three RC slabs with different fire loading conditions. Several simulations are also performed considering fire loading conditions, water contents, and cover depth. The proposed numerical technique can handle time-dependent fire loading, convection, radiation, and material properties. The proposed technique can be improved through early-aged concrete behavior like moisture transport which varies with external temperature.

In this study, the problem of strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) columns by a central steel section with minimum amount is taken up. For this purpose, RC columns with central reinforcing elements such as a steel bar, a steel H section and a steel pipe were taken up. To certify the effect of this way of reinforcing, experimental study using specimens of RC columns of shear span ratio of 2.5 was carried out. The variables which are considered to affect the behavior of RC columns subjected to axial load and cyclic shear load are the magnitude of axial load, tie ratio and main bar ratio. As the results of this study, the effect of a central reinforcing element for making higher the earthquake resistant properties of RC columns were observed.
