  • Cellulose-based rayon fibers or fabrics can be thermally decomposed very fast within a narrow temperature window during stabilization process. Therefore the stabilization stage is critically important for producing rayon-based carbon fibers. Consequently, in the present study the effects of isothermal stabilization and ultrasonic cleaning on the weight loss, chemical composition, microstructure, and fabric texture of cellulose-based rayon fabrics were explored. The temperature of the isothermal stabilization process performed in the range of $200{\sim}240^{\circ}C$ influenced the processing time, carbon and oxygen contents, cellulose structural change, and fabric texture. The ultrasonic cleaning, which was conducted prior to the stabilization process, played a role in shortening the stabilization time, increasing the carbon contents, decreasing the oxygen contents, and changing the XRD pattern. Also, it was considered that the ultrasonic cleaning contributed to retarding the weight loss, to reducing the thermal shrinkage, and further to reducing the fast physical change of rayon fabrics.

  • In the present study, stabilized rayon fabrics were prepared from fast isothermal stabilization processes, which were carried out within four minutes at $350^{\circ}C$. The effects of ultrasonic cleaning and chemical pre-treatment on the chemical composition, physical characteristics, X-ray diffraction pattern, thermal stability and shape of the stabilized rayon fabrics were investigated extensively. In order to reduce the weight loss and thermal shrinkage of rayon fabrics occurring during the stabilization process, ultrasonic cleaning was first conducted and then chemical pre-treatments using $NH_4Cl$, $Na_3PO_4$, $H_3PO_4$, and $ZnCl_2$ were performed, respectively. The results indicated that both ultrasonic cleaning and chemical pre-treatment influenced the weight loss, thermal shrinkage, microstructure, carbon content, thermal stability and fabric shape of stabilized rayon fabrics. Also the results depended on the fast-stabilization time and the type of chemical pre-treatment agents used.

  • This study was conducted to suggest the best union fabric to combine with cellulose fiber for summer and in-between seasons. Four types of union fabric, viz. silk/flax, silk/cotton, rayon/flax and rayon/cotton, were used as sample fabrics after weaving them in a local textile factory. The air permeability, moisture regain, water absorption, water vapor permeability and thermal insulation of the samples were tested. The results are as follows. The rayon/flax union fabric is the most suitable for summer clothes due to its having the best comfort property of air and water vapor permeability, and moisture and water absorption. For in-between seasons, it is recommended to use the silk/cotton union fabric because of its good thermal insulation properties.

  • We investigated the effect of stabilization processing parameters on the thermal shrinkage, thermal stability and microstructure of rayon fabrics stabilized under various conditions such as heating rate, stabilization temperature, atmosphere gas, and chemical treatment. The presence and absence of phosphoric acid treatment and the heating rate have most importantly influenced the thermal shrinkage and the weight change of rayon fabrics. Especially, the phosphoric acid treatment decreases the reduction of thickness, length, and weight of the fabrics by about 80%, 20%, and 26%, respectively, in comparison with the untreated counterparts, showing the protective effectiveness of the thermal shrinkage involved. The thermal stability of stabilized rayon fabrics is also affected by all the processing conditions used: stabilization temperature, phosphoric acid treatment, atmosphere gas, and heating rate. In addition, the surface and diameter of the stabilized fiber significantly depend on the treatment of phosphoric acid prior to stabilization process.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate dyeing characteristics of silk, cotton and rayon fabrics using dyeing solution extracted from different varieties of tea. Comparative results of CIE Lab values of 360 pieces of dyed fabrics were studied to quantify the effects of dye concentrations (100%, 150%, and 200%) and mordants (Fe, Cu, Sn, Al). In addition, the color difference values (${\Delta}E$) of the dyed and mordanted fabrics were evaluated. The results of the study were as follows: First, among all of the 360 pieces of silk, cotton and rayon fabrics, the best dyeing effects was observed on silk fabrics. Second, the dyeing effect of the eight different types of tealeaves belonging to green tea, oolong tea, black tea, and dark tea tended to enhance as the degree of fermentation increased. Third, when the fabrics were mordanted with Fe, Cu, Sn, Al mordants, various colors such as brown, brownish red, brownish yellow, gray, and reddish brown were obtained.

  • The mechanical and thermal properties of PAN-based/rayon-based carbon fabrics interply hybrid composite materials have been studied. Mechanical properties including tensile and interlaminar shear strengths were improved with increasing amount of continuous PAN-based carbon fabrics. The erosion rate and insulation index were determined through the torch test. Continuous rayon-based carbon fabrics composite indicated relatively low ablation resistant property. The thermal conductivity of hybrid composite of spun PAN-based/continuous rayon-based carbon fabrics is lower than that of the continuous PAN-based carbon fabrics composite.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dyeing properties of mugwort extract by nano-cellulose(n-cell). When dyeing cotton, rayon(artificial silk, called Ingyeon) and silk with mugwort extract, the difference with and without 2 wt% n-cell which it diluted to 0.6% treatment was compared. It was found that the addition of n-cell changed the values of L, -a(+red ~ -green), and b(+yellow ~ -blue) of all scoured cotton, rayon and silk fabrics, compared to dyeing only mugwort extract. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the ΔE and the K/S value slightly increased in all of the dyed cotton, rayon, and silk fabrics treated with n-cell at the same time as dyeing compared to the untreated ones. Therefore, by treating the fabric with n-cell, a natural cellulose component, at the same time as dyeing, it is expected to maintain stable fastness, which is a disadvantage of dyeing using natural dyes, and contribute to the utilization and commercialization of other natural dyes.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of structural properties of plain knit fabrics on the subjective textures and sensibilities of consumers. We investigated the relationship of subjective textures and sensibilities according to fiber contents of wool/rayon and stitch loop length. We made 20 plain knit fabrics, as specimens, with a combination of 5 kinds of fiber contents and 4 kinds of stitch loop length. A factor analysis showed that subjective textures are classified into 3 categories with $R^2=70.32\%$: 'surface-rough', 'drapable', 'bulky' and 'elastic' and subjective sensibilities into 3 categories with $R^2=68.12\%$: 'stable/neat', 'feminine/elegant' and 'natural/comfortable'. The fiber contents of wool/rayon had a positive and linear relation with 'surface-rough', but had a relatively non-linear one with 'bulky' and 'elastic' categories of textures, and 'feminine/elegant' of sensibilities. The stitch loop length had a linear influence on 'drapable' and 'stable/neat', but had a non-linear influence on other subjective textures and sensibilities.

  • In the variation of physical properties of adhesive fabrics, the objective of this study is to analyze fitness of fusible interlining to four sorts of fabrics for men's suit with various structural parameters. Four fusible interlinings are used for adhering to fabrics for men's suit. Mechanical properties of these 16 adhesive fabrics fused with these interlinings are measured by KES-FB system for analysing appearance and wearing properties of garments and for examining the fitness of fusible interlining to the fabrics for men's suit. The variation of bending property for adhesive fabrics are found to be higher in the order of interlining 1(Cotton30/Rayon70, plain), interlining 2(Polyester30/Rayon70, warp knit), interlining 4(Polyester, shingosen fabrics with drawing textured yarn) and interlining 3(Polyester, double dot coating interlining). The variation of adhesive effect shows the same results with bending property and shows negative relation with extensibility in weft direction per extensibility in warp direction(EM2/EM1). The variation of peel strength of adhesive fabrics, woolen fabrics in the case of face fabrics and interlining 3 in the case of interlining shows the largest value respectively.
