  • This study was carried out to investigate the resource plants of Mt. Midong. The resource plant of Mt. Midong was surveyed from March, 2002 to October, 2003. In the result of survey, the vascular plant species in Mt. Midong were summarized as 400 taxa; 85 families, 266 genera, 349 species, 48 varieties and 3 forms. And in the results of survey on resource plants among 400 taxa, we confirmed 162 taxa of ornamental plants(40.5%), 250 taxa of edible plants(62.5 %), 257 taxa of medicinal plants(64.3%) and 167 taxa of the others(41.8 %). The six taxa were recorded in the surveyed sites as the Korean endemic plants; Hytomecon hylomeconoides, Filipendula palmata var. glabra, Ajuga spectabilis, Weigela subsessilis, Cirsium setidens and Saussurea seoulensis. • Flora investigations have been conducted by many researchers for a long time in Korea. Even though large amount of investigation data has been accumulated, there is no accurate statistics or database because most of data were published in a printed form. We developed a web-based database of flora investigation, named as the Integrated Korean Flora Database (http://www.floradb.net/) to understand distribution patterns and habitats of plants in Korea. Till now, 480 published paper, 356 thesis, 76 reports and books, and 8 unpublished papers written in between 1962 and 2017 were collected and their species lists from 280 papers were parsed into the database. From 124,105 records, 3,100 species belonging to 206 families and 965 genera were identified via comparing with two major Korean plant species lists. 55 endangered species, 159 endemic species, and 367 rare species were identified. The most frequently surveyed species were Commelina communis in herbaceous and Rosa multiflora in woody plants. Microclimate data provided by Korea Meteorological Administration were also integrated and analyzed to assign cold hardness zones for each species. By comparing minimum temperature (<2%) acquired from automated weather stations (AWS) near by plant species, 6a to 10b zones (7b is the most frequent zone) were identified. Integrated Korean Flora Database will be a fundamental platform of korea flora investigation as well as a new standard for classifying distribution of plants based on accurate microclimate data. Moreover, it can also provide evidences of investigated plant species, such as specimen and/or pictures with connecting to the InfoBoss Cyber Herbarium (http://herbarium.infoboss. co.kr/) and Biodiversity Observation Datbase (BODB; http://www.biodiversitydb.org/).

  • Glehnia littoralis Fr. Schmidt et Miquel is an important medicinal plants in East Asian countries. This plant species naturally distributed in Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan, but it is a rare plants living in the coastal dune in Korea. To investigate the genetic variation, genetic diversity and genetic evolutionary relationships of 14 different geographical G. littoralis, ITS sequence and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) were analyzed. On the basis of ITS sequences, it was clearly showed that the ITS1 and ITS2 sequences among 14 populations are identical regardless of geographical origin excepting 2 bp in pair-wise comparison of ITS1. Furthermore, RAPD results also showed that 14 different geographical G. littoralis produce various polymorphic patterns without critical relationship among neighboring regions. These combined results suggest that the geographical variation and genetic evolution of G. littoralis is stable and provide important information on genetic diversity, and conservation of this rare plant species in situ and ex situ.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the native Phytolacca insularis in Ulleung Island for their distribution and ecological characteristics. P. insularis, called as "Sum-Ja-Ri-Gong", is very rare plant which is only restricted in Ulleung Island. It is a plant out of 217 endangered plant species designated by the Korea Forest Service (1996). The native sites were discovered several plants in the small communities at the area from 32m to 116m above the sea level in the seashore of Ulleung Island. The average vegetation height of herb layer in the native sites was 0.77m and average coverage percentage of vegetation layer was 75.56%. Average 11.89 species were emerged on a plot. P. insularis has a tendency to emerged with Galium spurium var. echinospermon and Artemisia lavandulaefolia community.

  • Tordylium maximum L. (Apiaceae), native to south, south-central Europe and southwest Asia and a rare alien plant in northern Europe, was newly found in Jeollabuk-do in Korea. Tordylium is clearly distinguished from other genera by having radiating petals, filiform bracts, linear bractlets, stalked mericarps with minutely vesicular dorsal face or strigose hairs, and an annual habit. Tordylium maximum is different from other species of the genus by its mericarps with smooth margins and 10-16 rays not contracted in fruit. T. maximum grows on dry and sunny grasslands. Here, we report the first occurrence of the genus Tordylium represented by T. maximum in Korea and provide a precise description, illustration, photographs of the species, and a taxonomic key to allied taxa in Korea.

  • The twenty eight taxa of rare and endangered plant species of Oesorak were investigated in the field, and the results were compiled according to the literature by Lee et al.(1996). Most of the populations of the investigated plants are located in the vicinity from the mountain trails which is the destruction pressures high. Also these plants are envisaged from the possible collections for both edible and medicinal purposes by local peoples, so the conservation strategies at the levels of habitat and species must be prepared. Taxuscaespitosa of Taxaceae has very few individuals and the status of the habitats envisaged serious problems from tramplings.
