RECOVERY OF METALS FROM EAF DUST WITH RAPID SYSTEM

  • The dust generated from the electric arc furnace steel making process is classified as hazardous material by Korean Environmental Protection Acts, mainly because of the existence of water teachable Pb, Zn and Cd. Thus the treatment of EAF dust is being carried out to fulfill both the environmental aspect and recovery of valuable metals. To establish the proper process for recovering the valuable metals (Fe, Zn, Pb and Cd) and producing the non-toxic slag from EAF dust, using RAPID-10 system, feasibility study have been carried out. To find out the scale-up factor for designing the commercial scale EAF dust treatment process(capacity 50,000 ton EAF dust per year) entitled RAPID-50 system. The design and construction of RAPID-50 (RIST Arc Plasma Industrial Device) system for treating 50,000 ton of EAF dust per year is now undergoing. Overall plan for treating EAF dust generated in KOREA will be setup after successful operation (December, 2002) of RAPID-50 system.

  • Sheet deposition type rapid prototyping system have many advantages : high build speed, low operating cost, large part size, no phase change, no need for support generation, and forth. However, those sheet deposition type rapid prototyping system require an additional post processing to remove excessive material attached to the part. This post processing is time consuming and labor intensive. Moreover, it is difficult for those system to fabricate parts with hollow cores and internal cavities. A new sheet deposition type rapid prototyping system that minimizes the post processing is proposed. The proposed system automatically removes excessive material in a peeling-off process between two cutting processes. In this way, the proposed system can reduce the post-processing time and cost as well as the limitation of the feasible geometric shapes in the conventional sheet deposition system.

  • This study is the selection of optimum forming condition for RP system using ADS. Program using ADS reduces the required time for feedback between design and manufacturing of workpiece. When we produce rapid prototype using RP system, we investigate the relationship between Facetres in system variable number of AutoCAD and circularity of rapid prototype, and we will find optimum forming condition in RP system.

  • With Rapid Prototyping system, the efficient packing in a fixed work volume reduces build time when multiple parts are built in a process. In this paper, an efficient and rapid packing algorithm is developed for SLS system that has cylindrical workspace. A genetic algorithm is implemented to place as many part as possible in a vat. For fast computation, a collision detection algorithm "k-DOPs Tree" is implemented.

  • The present work concerns rapid tooling technology based on three-dimensional CAD/CAM. Two types of tooling processes have been introduced : the quick delivery molding(QDM) process and the rapid tooling(RT) process using a rapid prototyping system. Both processes are based on three-dimensional CAD/CAM technology and realize a paperless manufacturing system with a high efficiency. The proposed approach has been applied to the product development for various electrical parts, and the final delivery has been reduced as compared with the traditional approach.

  • In order to reduce the lead-time and cost, many useful methods have been applied to Rapid Prototyping (RP) in recent years. But cutting process is still considered as one of the effective RP methods that have been developed and currently available in the industry. It also owen practical advantages such as precision and versatility. However, traditional 3 axis NC machining has some inherent limitations such as the restriction of tool accessibility and the complex setup. In this work, a new rapid prototyping system with high speed 5 axis machining has been developed to overcome those limitations. The architecture of developed system is described in detail and the successful application examples are presented.

Automatic design program reduces the required time for feedback between design and manufacturing of workpiece. Also we investigate the relationship between circularity of 3D solid model and circularity of rapid prototype using RP system and we will find optimum forming condition in RP system.

  • The Rapid Prototyping and Tooling technology has been developed. However, most commercial ones currently use resins or waxes as the raw materials. These days. the direct metal deposition methods are researched as a true rapid prototyping and tooling technology. A fundamental study on rapid prototyping and tooling with wire welding technology using $CO_2$ laser radiation was carried out in this paper. The main focus is to develop a simple commercial rapid prototyping and tooling system with the exiting laser welding technology. The process is investigated as a function of laser parameters and process variables. Basic parts were fabricated as out-put and their microstructure, hardness and tensile strength are examined for the reliability. In addition, Its advantages and disadvantages are discussed as a rapid prototyping and tooling system.
