  • In this paper, prediction of centrifugal fan was conducted through combination the hybrid CAA method which was used to predict the fan noise with the FRPM technique which was used to generate the broadband noise source. Firstly, flow field surround the centrifugal fan was computed using the RANS equations and noise source region was deducted from the computed flow field. Then the FRPM technique was applied to the source region for generation of turbulence which satisfies the stochastic features. The noise source of the centrifugal fan was modeled by applying the acoustic analogy to the synthesized flow field from the computed and generated flow fields. Finally, the broadband noise of the centrifugal fan was predicted through combination the modeled noise source with the linear propagation which was realized using the boundary element method. It was confirmed that the proposed technique is efficient to predict the tonal and broadband noises of centrifugal fan through comparison with the measured data.

  • The computational fluid dynamic analysis has been conducted for the thermo-chemical flow field in an arcjet thruster with mono-propellant Hydrazine (N2H4) as a working fluid. The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are modified to analyze compressible flows with the thermal radiation and electric field. the Maxwell equation, which is loosely coupled with the fluid dynamic equations through the Ohm heating and Lorentz forces, is adopted to analyze the electric field induced by the electric arc. The chemical reactions of Hydrazine were assumed to be infinitely fast due to the high temperature field inside the arcjet thruster. The chemical and the thermal radiation models for the nitrogen-hydrogen mixture and optical thick media respectively, were incorporated with the fluid dynamic equations. The results show that performance indices of the arcjet thruster with 1kW arc heating are improved by amount of 180% in thrust and 200% in specific impulse more than frozen flow. In addition thermo-physical process inside the arcjet thruster is understood from the flow field results.

  • Recently, a lot of studies have been made about the methods used to generate turbulent velocity fields stochastically in order to effectively predict broadband flow noise. Among them, the FRPM (Fast Random Particle Mesh) method which generates turbulence with specific statistical properties using turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation obtained from the steady solution of the RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations has been successfully applied. However, the FRPM method cannot be applied to the flow noise problems involving intrinsic unsteady characteristics such as centrifugal fan. In this paper, to effectively predict the broadband noise generated by centrifugal fan, U-FRPM (unsteady FRPM) method is developed by extending the FRPM method to be combined with the unsteady numerical solutions of the unsteady RANS equations to generate the turbulence considered as broadband noise sources. Firstly, an unsteady flow field is obtained from the unsteady RANS equations through CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Then, noise sources are generated using the U-FRPM method combined with acoustic analogy. Finally, the linear propagation model which is realized through BEM (Boundary Element Method) is combined with the generated sources to predict broadband noise at the listeners' position. The proposed technique is validated to compare its prediction result with the measured data.

  • The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) analysis of the 3-D steady flow around the NREL Phase VI horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) rotor was performed. The CFD analysis results were compared with experimental data at several different wind speeds. The present CFD model shows good agreements with the experiments both at low wind speed which formed well-attache flow mostly on the upper surface of the blade, and at high wind speed which blade surface flow completely separated. However, some discrepancy occurs at the relatively high wind speeds where mixed attached and separated flow formed on the suction surface of the blade. It seems that the discrepancy is related to the onset of stall phenomena and consequently separation prediction capability of the current turbulence model. It is also found that strong span-wise flow occurs in stalled area due to the centrifugal force generated by rotation of the turbine rotor and it prevents abrupt reduction of normal force for higher wind speed than the designed value.

  • In this paper, the computational analysis of open-water characteristics for three model propellers(P4119, P4842 and 3 podded propeller of KRISO) is done by using a viscous-flow method based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The results are presented for open-water performances, blade-section pressures, and circumferentially-averaged velocity profiles for the all three propeller models. Overall close agreements with available experimental data are shown. However, some discrepancies are also found in the pressure near the leading edge of the propeller blade and the open-water performance of the podded propellers.

  • The existing code which solves two-dimensional RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations and 2-equation turbulence model equations was modified to enable numerical simulation of various supersonic flows. For this, various boundary conditions have been implemented to the code. Bleed boundary condition was incorporated into the code for calculating wall mean flow quantities. Furthermore, boundary conditions for the turbulence quantities along rough surfaces as well as porous walls were applied to the code. The code was verified and validated by comparing the computational results against the experimental data for the supersonic flows over bleed region on a flat plate. Furthermore, numerical simulations for supersonic shock boundary layer interaction with a bleed region were performed and their results were compared with the existing computational results.

  • Turbulent flows around two-dimensional wing sections in ground effect are analysed by incompressible RANS equations and a finite difference method. The Baldwin-Lomax algebraic turbulence model is used to simulate high Reynolds number flows. The main purpose of this study is to clarify the two-dimensional ground effect and its flow characteristics due to different ground boundary conditions, i.e., moving and fixed bottom boundary. As a first step, to validate the present numerical code, the computational result of Clark-Y(t/C 11.7%) is compared with published numerical results and experimental data. Then, NACA4412 section in ground effect is calculated for various ground clearances with two bottom boundary conditions. According to the computational results, the difference in the lift and moment simulated with the two bottom boundary conditions is negligible, but the drag force simulated by the fixed bottom is to some extent smaller than that by the moving bottom. Therefore, it can be concluded that the drag force measured in a wind tunnel with the fixed bottom could be smaller than that with the moving bottom.

  • A finite-volume method is developed to solve turbulent flows around modern commercial hull forms with bow and stern bulbs. The RANS equations are solved. The cell-centered finite-volume method employs QUICK and central difference scheme for convective and diffusive flux discretization, respectively. The SIMPLEC method is adopted for the velocity-pressure coupling. The developed numerical methods are applied to calculate turbulent flow around KRISO 3600TEU container ship. Surface meshes are generated into five blocks: bow and stern bulbs, overhang, fore and afterbody. 3-D field grid system with O-H topology is generated using elliptic grid generation method. Surface friction lines and wake distribution at propeller plane is compared with experiment. The calculated results show that the present method can be used to predict flow around a modern commercial hull forms with bulbs.

  • Propeller type pump has been widely used for pumping water in agricultural and manufacturing industry. Since a propeller type pump contains a screw impeller inside a circular casing, the numerical analysis becomes complex. However, the accurate prediction of viscous flow is essential for computing hydrodynamic performances. To analysis the flow and the performance of the propeller type pump, the present work has solved 3D incompressible RANS equations on the multiblocked grid. From the present calculation, small amount of flow separation was shown near hub and the flow was recovered to nearly uniform inflow after one diameter downstream. Torque and thrust coefficient were computed and compared with experiments.
