The electronic equipment which is exposed to high level pulsed radiation is damaged by Upset, Latchup, and Burnout. Those damages come from the instantaneous photocurrent from electron-hole pairs generated in itself. Such damages appear as losses of a power in military weapon system or as a blackout in aerospace equipment and eventually caused in gross loss of national power. In this paper, we have implemented a RDC(Radiation detection and control module) as a part of the radiation protection technology of the electronic equipment or devices from the pulsed gamma radiation. The RDC, which is composed of pulsed gamma-ray detection sensor, signal processors, and pulse generator, is designed to protect the an important electronic circuits from the a pulse radiation. To verify the functionality of the RDC, LM118s, which had damaged by the pulse radiation, were tested. The test results showed that the test sample applied with the RDC was worked well in spite of the irradiation of a pulse radiation. Through the experiments we could confirm that the radiation protection technology implemented with the RDC had the functionality of radiation protection for the electronic devices.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural relationship between radiation hazards and radiation benefits effecting on overcoming recognition of Fukushima nuclear disaster (FND) in Japan by using structural equation modeling (SEM). The subjects were 248 undergraduates from one university in Chungbuk province in Korea. From June 1, 2017 to July 30, 2017, we conducted a questionnaire survey on the radiation hazards and radiation benefits and on the overcoming recognition of FND. As a result, it showed that the recognition of radiation hazards has a significant effect on the benefits of radiation, but does not directly affect the overcoming recognition of FND. However, the recognition of radiation benefits has been mediating between radiation hazards perception and the overcoming recognition of FND. Therefore, it can be empirically confirmed that despite the radiation hazards the recognition of overcoming the FND depends on the level of radiation benefits by using the SEM.
This study was performed to evaluate the effects of preoperative and postoperative radiation on the healing of surgical wound and the relationship between surgery-radiation interaval histopathologically. Experimental animals were 64 rats of Sprague-Dawely strain weighing about 180grams. In postoperative radiation group, a single dose of 1000 rads irradiation was delivered on 1,2,3, weeks after incision and 24 animals were sacrificed on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 14th day after radiation. In preoperative radiation group incision was performed on 1,2,3,4 weeks after a single dose of 1000 rads and 32 animals were sacrificed on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 14th after incision. Tissue specimens were prepared as usual methods and stained with hematoxyline-eosin for ordinary light microscopy. Histopathologic study revealed the following favorable results : 1. In 2 and 3 weeks radiation group after incision, the healing process was unaffected by radiation. 2. In 1 week radiation group after incision, the healing process was slightly retarded, as compared with 2,3 weeks radiation group after incision. 3. In 1,2 and 3 weeks incision group after radiation, the healing process appeared about 7 days later than that of control group. 4. In 4 weeks incision after radiation, the healing process was unaffected by radiation.
The study aimed to measure the levels of radiation protection for radiologists in medical institutions in three environmental categories (physical, administrative and social) and to establish a data base which can be used to increase awareness of environmental radiation protection in medical institutions within Korea. The study surveyed 10% of radiologists working in radiology departments in medical institutions which are supervised by the National Dose Registry overseen by the Korean Food and Drug Administration(KFDA). This study found that the level of environmental radiation protection was higher in the capital area and in larger hospitals. On the other hand, the study shows environmental radiation protection was lower in the Youngnam area and in clinics. Results from the questionnaires indicate the level of environmental radiation protection was higher when radiologists were given an individual dosimeter but lowest when the radiation protection apron quality test was conducted. Environmental radiation protection is an important factor for radiologists to conduct activities in a safe and protected environment. However, this study shows there are differences in the level of environmental radiation protection in medical institutions and location within Korea. In particular, the level of environmental radiation protection was lower in clinics, appropriate intervention strategies befitting these conditions are needed based on medical institution classification and location in order to improve the level of environmental protection.
Radioiodine ablation therapy has been considered to be a standard treatment for patient with differentiated thyroid cancer after total thyroidectomy. Patients may need to be hospitalized to reduce radiation exposure of other people and relatives from radioactive patients receiving radioiodine therapy. Medical staffs, nursing staffs and technologists sometimes hesitate to contact patients in radioiodine therapy ward. The purpose of this paper is to introduce radiation dosimetry, estimate radiation dose from patients and emphasize the safety of radiation exposure from patients treated with high dose radioiodine in therapy ward. The major component of radiation dose from patient is external exposure. However external radiation dose from these patients treated with typical therapeutic dose of 4 to 8 GBq have a very low risk of cancer induction compared with other various risks occurring in daily life. The typical annual radiation dose without shielding received by patient is estimated to be 5 to 10 mSv, which is comparable with 100 to 200 times effective dose received by chest PA examination. Therefore, when we should keep in mind the general principle of radiation protection, the risks of radiation exposure from patients are low and the medical personnel are considered to be safe from radiation exposure.
한국수의병리학회 2005년도 Proceedings of The 2nd Asian Society of Veterinary Pathology Symposium(Vol.2) and 2005 Annual Meeting of The Korean Society of Veterinary Pathology(Vol.9)
Background: On June 18, 2017, Korea's first commercial nuclear reactor, the Kori Nuclear Power Plant No. 1, was permanently suspended, and the capacity of nuclear power generation facilities will be adjusted according to the governments denuclearization policy. In these circumstances, it is necessary to assess the quality of radiation safety management in nuclear power plants in Korea by evaluating the radiation dose associated with them. Materials and Methods: The average annual radiation dose per unit, the annual radiation dose per person, and the annual dose distribution were analyzed using the radiation dose database of nuclear reactors for the last 5 years. The results of our analysis were compared to the specifications of the Nuclear Safety Act and Medical Law in Korea. Results and Discussion: The annual average per unit radiation dose of global major nuclear power generation was 720 man-mSv, while that of Korea's nuclear power plants was 374 manmSv. No workers exceeded 50 mSv per year or 100 mSv in 5 years. The individual radiation dose according to occupational exposure was 0.59 mSv for nuclear workers, 1.77 mSv for non-destructive workers, and 0.8 mSv for diagnostic radiologists. Conclusion: The radiation safety management of nuclear power plants in Korea has achieved the best outcomes worldwide, which is considered to be the result of the as-low-as-reasonably-achievable (ALARA) approach and strict radiation safety management. Moreover, the occupational exposures were also very low.
Purpose: Radiation oncology information systems (ROIS) have evolved toward connecting and integrating information between radiation treatment procedures. ROIS can play an important role in utilizing modern radiotherapy techniques that have high complexity and require a large amount of information. Methods: Using AccessTM software, we have developed a relational database that is highly optimized for a radiotherapeutic workflow. Results: The prescription table was chosen as the core table to which the other tables were connected, and three types of forms-charts, worklists, and calendars- were suggested. A fast and reliable channel for delivering orders and remarks according to changes in the situation was also designed. Conclusions: We expect our ROIS design to inspire those who need to develop and manage an individual ROIS suitable for their radiation oncology departments at a low cost.
Background: Radiation exposure can occur as a result of occupational activities utilizing sources of radiation. The average level of occupational exposure is generally similar to the global average, but some workers receive more than this. In this study, the occupational exposure data for workers in Korea to check the recent trend of radiation exposure. Materials and Methods: The data collection and analysis are carried out by two separate periods based on the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) survey. One is the year 2003 to 2014 for a recent survey, and the other is 2015 to 2019. All available data were collected by annual reports from radiation dose registry organizations. Results and Discussion: The annual dose over the record level to the total workers did not change much compared with the total increasing number of workers in this period. The dose to the nuclear fuel cycle field has a tendency to decrease. It resulted from the efforts of radiation dose reduction with high technology introduced to this area. Also, it is important result that the radiation dose to the workers in radiography is remarkably reduced. Conclusion: The number of radiation workers and average doses were analyzed for occupational categories in Korea. It still needs cooperative efforts between the dose registry organizations for the efficient dose management of Korean radiation workers.
This study is to develop a mobile type environmental radiation measurement system for emergency response or environmental radiation monitoring of local governments near nuclear facilities. A mobile radiation measurement system can monitor radiation by field beyond the spatial constraints of a fixed environmental radiation monitor. If installed in local government infrastructure such as public transportation, environmental radiation can be monitored without additional manpower and measurement work. In addition, it is designed to enable monitoring and measurement of radiation from low to high doses as well as the environment in preparation for radioactive disasters such as nuclear power plant accidents. It is expected that this system will be utilized not only in normal times but also in the event of a radiation accident to improve the disaster prevention capabilities of local governments.
