  • Evaporating heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-134a were measured in smooth horizontal copper tubes with inner diameters of 1.77, 3.36 and 5.35mm, respectively. The experiments were conducted in a closed loop, which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. Experiments were performed for the following range of variables: mass velocity (200 to 400 kg/$m^2$.s), saturation temperature($0^{circ}C,; 5^{\circ}C$) and quality(0 to 1.0). Main results obtained are as follows: evaporating heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes (ID<7mm) were observed to be strongly affected by various diameters and to differ from those in the large diameter tubers. The heat transfer coefficients of the small diameter tubes were higher than those of the large diameter tubs. And it was very difficult to apply some well-known previous predictions (Shah`s, Gungor-Winterton`s and Kandlikar`s correlation) to small diameter tubes.

  • Condensing heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-134a were measured in smooth, horizontal copper tubes with inner diameters of 1.77mm, 3.36mm, and 5.35mm, respectively. The experiments were conducted in the closed loop, which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. Data are presented for the following range of variables : mass velocity from 200 to 500kg/$m^2$.s and quality from 0 to 1.0. The heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes (ID < 7mm) were observed to be strongly affected by various diameters and the heat transfer characteristics in the small diameter tubes differed from those in the large diameter tubes. Heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes are higher than those in the large diameter tubes at the same experimental condition. It was found that some well-known previous correlations(Shahs correlation and Cavallini-Zecchins correlation) were not suitable for small diameter tubes.

  • Experimental work was performed on the flow characteristics of R-22 and R-l34a in small diameter tubes. The experimental apparatus was made up of liquid pump, pre-heater, sight-glass, condenser and measurement instruments. The sight-glass for flow pattern observations was located at the outlet of the pre-heater. The experiment was carried out to show the flow characteristics of R-22 and R-l34a. Data were taken with test conditions in the following ranges; the mass flux was ranged from 100 to 1,000 kg/$m^2s$, the saturation temperature was $30^{\circ}C$ and the vapor quality was ranged from 0.1 to 0.9. The main results were summarized as follows; In the flow patterns during evaporation, the annular flow in a 2 mm inner diameter tube occurred at a relatively lower quality and mass velocity, compared to the flow in a 8mm inner diameter tube. The evaporation flow in small diameter tubes has been shown major deviations with the Mandhane, Taitel-Dukler's and Wambs-ganss' flow pattern maps but it was similar to the Dobson's flow pattern map.

  • Large diameter tubes have been used until comparatively lately. However, small diameter tubes are largely used because of their high efficiency in heat transfer and low cost, recently. This study focuses on the experimental research of the heat transfer coefficients during evaporation process of R-22 and R-134a in small diameter tubes. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients were measured in smooth horizontal copper tubes with ID 1.77, 3.36 and 5.35 mm. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes (ID <7 mm) were observed to be strongly affected by the size of tube diameters and to differ from those of general predictions in the large diameter tubes. The heat transfer coefficients of ID 1.77 mm copper tube were higher by 20 and 30 % than those of ID 3.36 mm, ID 5.35 mm copper tubes respectively. Also, it was found that it was very difficult to apply some well-known previous predictions (Shah's, Jung's. Kandlikar's and Oh-Katsuda's correlation) to small diameter tubes. Based on the data, the new correlation is proposed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-134a in small diameter tubes.

  • The condensation pressure drop for R-22 and R-410A flowing in a small diameter tube was investigated. The test section is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and coolant flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of 1220 mm length with horizontal copper tube of 3.38 mm outer diameter and 1.77 mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes ranged from 450 to $1050\;kg/m^2{\cdot}s$ and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main experimental results were summarized as follows : In the case of two-phase flow, the pressure drop increases with increasing mass flux and decreasing quality. The pressure drop of R-22 is slightly higher than that of R-410A for the same mass flux. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed enormous deviations with experimental data.

  • The condensation pressure drop for pure refrigerants R-22, R-134a, and a binary refrigerant mixture R-410A flowing in a small diameter tube was investigated. The test section is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and coolant flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of 1220 [mm] length with horizontal copper tube of 3.38 [mm] outer diameter and 1.77 [mm] inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes ranged from 450 to 1050 [kg/(㎡$.$s)] and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main experimental results were summarized as follows : In the case of single-phase flow, the pressure drop of R-134a is much higher than that of R-22 and R-410A for the same Reynolds number. The friction factors for small diameter tubes are higher than those predicted by Blasius equation. In the case of two-phase flow, the pressure drop increases with increasing mass flux and decreasing quality. The pressure drop of R-134a is much higher than that of R-22 and R-410A for the same mass flux. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed enormous deviations with experimental data. However, the correlation predicted by Honda et al showed relatively good agreement with experimental data for R-134.

The experiment apparatus consists of a refrigerant loop and a water loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a variable-speed pump, a mass flowmeter, an evaporator, and a condenser(test section). The water loop consists of a variable-speed pump, an isothermal tank, and a flowmeter. The condenser is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of smooth, horizontal copper tube of 3.38mm outer diameter and 1.77mm inner diameter. The length of test section is 1220mm. The refrigerant mass fluxes varied from 450 to 1050kg/(㎡$.$s) and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main results were summarized as follows ; in the case of single-phase flow, the heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing mass flux. The heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was higher than that of R-22 and R-134a, and the heat transfer for small diameter tubes were about 20% to 27% higher than those predicted by Gnielinski. In the case of two-phase flow, the heat transfer coefficients also increase with increasing mass flux and quality. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was slightly higher than that of R-22 and R-134a. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed significant deviations with experimental data except for the ranges of low quality and low mass flux.

Also. it was very difficult to apply some well-known previous predictions (Cavallini-Zecchin's. Haraguchi's and Dobson's correlation) to small diameter tubes. Based on an analogy between heat and mass transfer the new correlation is Proposed to predict the experimental data more accurately.
