Because both R-134a and R-600a are used as a refrigerant of a household refrigerator in the global market, the home-appliance industry needs an optimized cycle for both refrigerants. The objective of this study is to provide the design guideline on the optimization of a refrigeration system using both refrigerants. For both refrigerants, the performance characteristics of the refrigeration system were tested by varying refrigerant charge amount, capillary tube length, suction diameter and SLHX length. The tested refrigeration system was optimized at the refrigerant charge of 60 g and the capillary tube length of 3600 mm with R-134a, and the refrigerant charge of 34 g and the capillary tube length of 3900 mm with R-600a. The COP increased from 1.63 to 1.68 for R-134a and increased from 1.37 to 1.48 for R-600a, respectively, by applying the suction diameter expansion. In addition, the COP of the R-134a and R-600a system decreased by 2.3~2.4% as the SLHX length decreased by 300 mm.

In this study, the performance of mobile air conditioner(MAC) systems to which the refrigerants R134a and R1234yf were used was evaluated to compare the characteristic of automotive refrigeration cycles with refrigerant. The experimental setup of a MAC consists of an belt driven compressor, a condenser, an evaporator and a block type thermal expansion valve. The drop-in test on MAC were carried out under variable compressor speed from 800 to 2500 rpm. Performance test by using R1234yf and R134a in the same system revealed low the charge amount and mass flow rates for using R1234yf, that is, up to 10% and 17%, respectively. The compressor discharge temperature of R1234yf is $8^{\circ}C$ lower than that of R134a. The cooling capacity with R1234yf system decreased by 4~7% compared with R134a system. In addition, The COP of R1234yf system is lower 3~4% than that of R134a system.

R1234yf has been developed as an alternative refrigerant to R134a, which has been associated with global warming. The capillary tubes as expansion valves control the mass flow rate and balance system pressure in the refrigeration cycle. The present numerical model used the governing equations including the law of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in a capillary tube. The mass flow rate of R1234yf decreased by 47.0% as the capillary tube length was increased from 1 to 4 m. As the inner diameter of the capillary tubes was changed from 1.3 to 1.7 mm, the mass flow rate of R134a and R1234yf increased by 117.9% and 121.0%, respectively. The mass flow rate of the R134a and R1234yf increased by 28.3% and 29.1% with subcooling increasing from 0 to $7^{\circ}C$. In addition, when the inlet temperature of the capillary tubes was changed from 35 to $60^{\circ}C$, the mass flow rate of R134a and R1234yf increased by 31.0% and 45.4%, respectively.

In this study, pool boiling performance of Turbo/B-type metal-formed tubes was investigated. Tubes with three different cavity gap width(0.04 mm, 0.07 mm, 0.1 mm) were manufactured and tested using R-11, R-123 and R-134a. Tests were conducted at two different saturation temperatures $4.4^{\circ}C$ and $26.7^{\circ}C.$ Heat flux was varied from 10 kW/m2 to 50 kW/m2. It was found that optimum gap width varied for different refrigerants. For low-pressure refrigerants such as R-11 or R-123, optimum gap width was 0.07 mm. For high-pressure refrigerant R-134a, however, the optimum value was 0.1 mm. Compared with the heat transfer performance of the smooth tube, the metal-formed tubes enhanced the heat transfer coefficients significantly - 6.5 times for R-11, 6.0 times for R-123 and 5.0 times for R-134a (at $4.4^{\circ}C$ saturation temperature and 40 kW/m2 heat flux), which are comparable with the performance of foreign products. The heat transfer coefficients of R-134a were larger than those of R-11 or R-123, and they increased as the saturation temperature increased.

The solubility and miscibility measurement apparatus has been developed and used to obtain data for refrigerant/oil mixture. The solubility and miscibility data for R-134a/46 ISO VG Polyalkylen Glycol(PAG) oil mixture are obtained over the temperature range from -20 to 6$0^{\circ}C$ with a 1$0^{\circ}C$ interval and the oil concentration range from 0 to 90wt%. Using the experimental data, an empirical model is developed to predict the solubility relations for R-134a/PAG oil mixture at equilibrium. The average root-mean-square deviation between measured data and calculated results from the empirical model is 4.2%. Raoult's rule and Flory-Noggins theory are also used to predict mixture behavior. Immiscibility is observed for R-134a/46 ISO VG PAG oil mixture at low oil concentrations of 4.6, 10.1, and 20.4wt%.

In this study, a performance comparison of scroll compressor for various refrigerants(CFC-12, HCFC-22 and HFC-134a) has been numerically carried out. The thermodynamic properties have been calculated by using the recent experimental equations and the performance has been investigated qualitatively at the same geometric specifications and operating conditions of scroll compressor. The results are as follows; HFC-134a has the highest compression ratio of 5.40. The mass flow rate of HCFC-22, which affects the cooling capacity of refrigerant system, is higher than that of other refrigerants. HFC-134a has the highest adiabatic efficiency in comparison with CFC-12 and HCFC-22.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of an autocascade refrigeration system using the refrigerant miktures of R744 (carbon dioxide) and R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) as working fluids by simulation and experiment. Cycle simulation using a constant UA model in heat exchangers has been performed for R744/134a mixtures of the compositions in the range of from 10/90 to 30/70 by weight percentage. Variations of mass flow rate of refrigerant, compressor work, refrigeration capacity and COP with respect to mass fraction of R744/134a mixture were presented. Performance test has been executed in an autocascade refrigeration system by varying secondary fluid temperatures at evaporator and condenser inlets. Experimental results show similar trend with those from the simulation.

In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of R134a and R1234yf are measured on a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes at the saturated vapor temperature of $39^{\circ}C$ with the wall subcooling of $3{\sim}8^{\circ}C$. R1234yf is a new alternative refrigerant of low greenhouse warming potential for replacing R134a which is one of the greenhouse gases controlled by Kyoto protocol and is used extensively in mobile air-conditioners. Test results show that the external condensation HTCs of R1234yf are very similar to those of R134a for all three surfaces tested. For the application of condensation heat transfer correlations to the design of condensers charged with R1234yf, thorough property measurements are needed for R1234yf in the near future.

Thermodynamic properties of alternatives for R12 and R22 were estimated and performances of refrigerating cycle using these refrigerants were compared. In this study, we adopt R134a, R22/R142b, R22/R152a, R22/R152a/R124 as alternatives for R12 and R32/R134a for R22. Thermodynamic properties of these refrigerants were estimated using modified CSD equation of state. Cycle simulations of the refrigerating system considering heat source were carried out in order to compare the performance of the system. R134a shows relatively lower COP than R12 but very similar VCR. R22/R142b(50/50 mass fraction), R22/R152a(10/90), R22/R152a/R124(30/25/45) are good for the substitutes of R12 and R32/R134a(30/70) is appropriate for that of R22 in view of COP and VCR.

This study presented the feasibility of R152a refrigerant as an alternative of R134a which is used in the current automobile air conditioning system. The performance of air conditioning system installed in the actual vehicle was tested using the climate wind tunnel. The experiments were conducted at various refrigerant charge quantities and various driving conditions such as city traffic, highway traffic and parking. Same components and lubricant were used for both R134a and R152a system. The effects of air set values of thermal expansion valve on the performance were also investigated. In case of the R152a system, refrigerant charge quantity can be reduced about 20%, better performance and superior compressor durability is expected due to the lower discharge pressure compared to the R134a system.
