This application-oriented paper describes an automated welding carriage system to weld a thin corrugated workpiece with welding seam tracking function. Hyundai Heavy Industries Corporation has developed an automatic welding carriage system, which utilizes pulsed plasma arc welding process for corrugated sheets. It can obtain high speed welding more than 2 times faster than traditional TIG based welding system. The aim of this development is to increase the productivity by using automatic plasma welding carriage systems, to track weld seam line using vision sensor automatically, and finally to provide a convenience to operator in order to carry out welding. In this paper a robust image processing and a distance based tracking algorithms are introduced for corrugated workpiece welding. The automatic welding carriage system is controlled by the programmable logic controller(PLC), and the automatic welding seam tracking system is controlled by the industrial personal computer(IPC) equipped with embedded OS. The system was tested at actual workpiece to show the feasibility and performance of proposed algorithm and to confirm the reliability of developed controller.

We, Tong Yang Moolsan Co. Ltd. (TYM) set up the mass-production system for virus-free seed garlic via tissue culture technique. TYM's tissue culture technique is called as 'Multiple shoot propagation technique'. This technique can lead mass propagation of genetically homogeneous seed garlic in a short period because of its highly proliferation rate of in vitro shoots ($15^{10}$ /year). TYM researchers applied the technique to some selected garlic cultivars with superior characteristics and carried out field test of productivity in the inside and outside of the country for several years. According to the yearly results of field test with virus-free seed garlic, we ascertained that virus-free seed garlic can produce the highly yield increase (max. above $50\%$) and also can enhance the product quality. Consequently, we estimated that TYM's seed garlic will contribute to farmers with increase of income and can elevate the national position of garlic market in the world for its competitive power of technical and production cost.
This study investigates the effects of the two most important indicators of a nation's state of scientific infrastructure: R&D investment and the number of R&D researchers engaged in high-tech product export competitiveness for a panel of 11 countries/economies from East Asia from 1994 to 2010. A GMM panel estimation method was employed to account for the dynamic effect of trade and to control for un-observed country specific effects that may arise due to an inter-country differences and intra-country dynamics. Accordingly, the empirical results reveal that (once controlled for the influence of per capita income) physical capital and infrastructure, a 1% increase in a country's expenditure on the ratio of R&D to GDP may increase high-tech product export performance by approximately $397 million per year. Other factors constant, a 1% increase in the number of R&D researchers is expected to increase the ability to export high-tech products by approximately $67 million. The East Asian development experience demonstrates how latecomers can follow systematic industrialization and join the handful of economies that have come a long way toward closing the knowledge gap with the global technological leaders. However, this does not mean that the policy approaches and overall commitments pursued by each East Asian economy in relation to R&D investment and acquisition of an adequate pool of researchers, and their ultimate achievements in high-tech product export competitiveness were uniform. As a result, there is still a significant variation among countries/economies in terms of performance. This study recommended a number of potential tools and policy instruments that may assist policy makers to foster R&D as an engine to enhance the high-tech product export competitiveness.
This paper empirically studies the relationship between R&D expenditures and firms value. First, we can conjecture that R&D expenditures are enhancing the firms value. Such findings depend on an existing research, which R&D expenditures are intangible asset rather than expenses. Although, under U.S. accounting standards, financial statements do not report intangible assets but costs. Second, we can conjecture that short-term, the rate of increase in R&D expenditures had negative influence on firms valuation, because such findings indicates that R&D spending of costs incur mis-pricing. But long-term, consistently R&D expenditures may attract investors on the stock market. Third, lately firms focus on capital efficiency management, such a firms R&D expenditures incur high ROE. Generally investors put too much confidence in capital efficiency management and high ROE may attract investors on the stock market. Finally, High-Tech through the R&D investment improve firms competitive advantage, by competitive advantage, firms have reduced cost and raised productivity in the end improve firms value.

Linking of the national R&D information between different ministries is a difficult task because they were all constructed independently. A standard infrastructure for the dissemination of such R&D information is required. This paper suggests a distributed integration method for the effective linking, gathering and integration of national R&D information. R&D management institutes designated by each ministry will gather and manage all the R&D information produced using the budget by the ministry and the information required for the integrated management of national R&D will be gathered from this information. Standardization of the R&D information, linking procedure and the construction method for the data linking software will be defined in this paper. The usage of R&D information will be processed more effectively to maximize the utiliation and productivity of national R&D activities.

Construction Research and Development (R & D) projects have been begun with the investment of 1.2 billions in 1994 and have been reached to 30 billions in 2004. During this ten-year period, a total of investment for construction R&D amounts to 125.7 billions (Total 418 construction R&D projects). However, the results of each R&D project could not apply to real construction site because each project has been performed by a small size (0.5 billions). In addition to those, the social interest on the construction R&D projects has not been received and those importance has not been recognized. Especially, there aren't still standardized methodologies or weighted measurement data for evaluating research performance of the construction R&D projects up to now. The construction R&D projects has been Invested on the basis of an annual technology demand survey rather than the research performance outcome. Therefore, it is important to establish a qualitative performance measurement model for evaluating construction R&D projects. This paper proposes a new research methodology for analyzing the performance measurement of the construction R&D projects. First of all, the Balanced Score Card (BSC) is used to evaluate the construction STAR technologies selected in this research. The performance items of BSC has been modified as four criteria such as "productivity, "knowledge accumulation," "training of students," and "welfare." The new research methodology developed in this paper is expected to use in establishing resonable construction R&D budget in the future.
The paper tests the embodiment hypothesis by measuring the technological obsolescence of a specific year (1990)'s technology and investigating the relationship between labor productivity and technological obsolescence. This approach is based on Salter (1969) that emphasizes the economic aspect of technology. We use the rate of economic surplus as the proxy of technological obsolescence for 10 main industries, including food processing, textiles, chemicals, non-steel metals, steels, metal products, machinery, electronics, precision machinery, and transportation equipments. The result shows that the embodiment hypothesis is not accepted for the overall manufacturing sector. However, we found the vintage effect - a positive relationship between technological obsolescence and labor productivity over time - in textiles, chemicals, non-steel metals, metal products, electronics, and transportation equipments. Therefore, the government should support R&D investment as well as capital equipments investment for the industries with large vintage effect.
Chlorella vulgaris was isolated from the Nile River, Qalubia Governorate, Egypt, for possible use in biodiesel production. BG-II nutrient growth media was used for isolation and laboratory growth. Identification was performed via 18S rRNA gene amplification, followed by sequencing. The alga was exposed to UV-C (254 nm) for 15, 30, and 45 s to improve dry weight accumulation and to increase the oil production. Daily measurements of dry weight ($g{\cdot}l^{-1}$) were performed; oil content and volumetric lipid productivity were also determined. UV-C exposure led to an increase in the volumetric lipid productivity by 27, 27.3, and $32.4mg{\cdot}l^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ with 15, 30, and 45 s, respectively, as compared with the control, which resulted in $18mg{\cdot}l^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. Of the examined mutants, the one with the highest productivity was re-irradiated by UV-C (254 nm) for 15, 30, 45, and 60 s. For 15 s of exposure time, the oil content increased to 34%, while it was 31% at 30 s; further, it decreased to 22% at 45 and 60 s exposures. The fatty acid methyl ester profile was 82.22% in the first mutant at 45 s, compared with the wild strain that contained a total of 66.01% of FAs. Furthermore, the highest levels of polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl ester were observed in the mutant exposed for 45 s, and it reached 11.41%, which reduced the cetane number to 71.3.

R&D investment has rised in recent years. Korea's R&D budget is 43.8 trillion won which is 3.74% adjusted gross domestic product in 2010. Technological advances and technical inovation will bring productivity growth to Firm and Firm's productivity growth will increase GDP in sequence. Therefore the importance of study on the Firm's R&D industry is getting growing. In this study we attempt to analyse the economic impact of the Firm's R&D industry through several years using an inter-industry analysis. Specifically, this study analyze production-inducing effect, value added inducing effect, and employ-inducing effect based on demand-driven model. The analysed results of year from 1995 to 2009, the Firm's R&D investment increases production-inducing effect, value added inducing effect, and employ-inducing effect with the course of time. This means that influence of the Firm's R&D industry has increased.

In this paper, we have designed a deployment process system that extract and integrate information related to technology and market opportunities through searching for external environment and internal condition on multi-dimensional space in order to generate new research themes. It is expected that this theme extraction model could be contributed to the maximization of R&D productivity by systemization of the opportunity extraction process for generating research themes in R&D center or laboratory.
