  • This paper proposes an index structure which is used to process X-Path on S-XML data. There are many previous index structures based on tree structure for X-Path processing. Because of general tree index's top-down query fashion, the unnecessary node traversal makes heavy access and decreases the query processing performance. And both of the two query types for X-Path called single-path query and branching query need to be supported in proposed index structure. This method uses a combination of path summary and the node indexing. First, it manages hashing on hierarchy elements which are presented in tag in S-XML. Second, array blocks named path summary array is created in each node of hashing to store the path information. The X-Path processing finds the tag element using hashing and checks array blocks in each node to determine the path of query's result. Based on this structure, it supports both single-path query and branching path query and improves the X-Path processing performance.

  • In a large DNA database, indexing techniques are widely used for rapid approximate sequence searching. However, most indexing techniques require a space larger than original databases, and also suffer from difficulties in seamless integration with DBMS. In this paper, we suggest a space-efficient and disk-based indexing and query processing algorithm for approximate DNA sequence searching, specially exact match queries, wildcard match queries, and k-mismatch queries. Our indexing method places a sliding window at every possible location of a DNA sequence and extracts its signature by considering the occurrence frequency of each nucleotide. It then stores a set of signatures using a multi-dimensional index, such as R*-tree. Especially, by assigning a weight to each position of a window, it prevents signatures from being concentrated around a few spots in index space. Our query processing algorithm converts a query sequence into a multi-dimensional rectangle and searches the index for the signatures overlapped with the rectangle. The experiments with real biological data sets revealed that the proposed method is at least three times, twice, and several orders of magnitude faster than the suffix-tree-based method in exact match, wildcard match, and k- mismatch, respectively.

  • Similarity indexing and searching are well known to be difficult in high-dimensional applications such as multimedia databases. Especially, they become more difficult when multiple features have to be indexed together. In this paper, we propose a novel indexing method called the GB-index that is designed to efficiently handle complex similarity queries as well as relevance feedback in high-dimensional image databases. In order to provide the flexibility in controlling multiple features and query objects, the GB-index treats each dimension independently The efficiency of the GB-index is realized by specialized bitmap indexing that represents all objects in a database as a set of bitmaps. Main contributions of the GB-index are three-fold: (1) It provides a novel way to index high-dimensional data; (2) It efficiently handles complex similarity queries; and (3) Disjunctive queries driven by relevance feedback are efficiently treated. Empirical results demonstrate that the GB-index achieves great speedups over the sequential scan and the VA-file.

  • The spatiotemporal database concerns about the time-varying spatial attributes. One of the important research areas is related to the support of various location-based services in motile communication environments. It is known that database systems may be difficult to manage the accurate geometric locations of moving objects due to their continual changes of locations. However, this requirement is necessary in various spatiotemporal applications including mobile communications, traffic control and military command and control (C2) systems. In this paper we propose the $B^{st}$-tree that utilizes the concept of multi-version B-trees. It provides an indexing method (or the historical and future range query Processing on moving object's trajectories. Also we present a dynamic version management algorithm that determines the appropriate version evolution induced by the mobility patterns to keep the query performance. With experiments we .;hi)w that our indexing approach is a viable alternative in this area.

  • On multimedia databases, in order to realize the fast access method, indexing methods for the multidimension data space are used. However, since it is a premise to use the Euclid distance as the distance measure, this method lacks in flexibility. On the other hand, there are metric indexing methods which require only to satisfy distance axiom. Since metric indexing methods can also apply for distance measures other than the Euclid distance, these methods have high flexibility. This paper proposes an improved method of VP-tree which is one of the metric indexing methods. VP-tree follows the node which suits the search range from a route node at searching. And distances between a query and all objects linked from the leaf node which finally arrived are computed, and it investigates whether each object is contained in the search range. However, search speed will become slow if the number of distance calculations in a leaf node increases. Therefore, we paid attention to the candidates selection method using the triangular inequality in a leaf node. As the improved methods, we propose a method to use the nearest neighbor object point for the query as the datum point of the triangular inequality. It becomes possible to make the search range smaller and to cut down the number of times of distance calculation by these improved methods. From evaluation experiments using 10,000 image data, it was found that our proposed method could cut 5%~12% of search time of the traditional method.

  • To manage large database system with video, effective video indexing and retrieval are required. A large number of video retrieval algorithms have been presented for frame-wise user query or video content query, whereas a few video identification algorithms have been proposed for video sequence query. In this paper, we propose an effective video identification algorithm for video sequence query that employs the Cauchy function of histograms between successive frames and the modified Hausdorff distance. To effectively match the video sequences with a low computational load, we make use of the key frames extracted by the cumulative Cauchy function and compare the set of key frames using the modified Hausdorff distance. Experimental results with several color video sequences show that the proposed algorithm for video identification yields remarkably higher performance than conventional algorithms such as Euclidean metric, and directed divergence methods.

  • In this paper, a Mobile Continuous Query Processing System (MCQPS) is designed to solve problems related to database hoarding, maintenance of shared data consistency, and optimization of logging. These problems are caused by weak connectivity and disconnection of wireless networks inherent in mobile database systems under mobile client-server environments. We show the superiority of the proposed MCQPS by comparing its performance to the Client-Intercept-Server (C-I-S) model. In addition, several experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposed indexing structure and methodology for real-time continuous queries.

  • If there is an Information Retrieval system which comprehends the semantic content of documents and knows the preference of users. the system can search the information better on the Internet, or improve the IR performance. Therefore we propose the IR model which combines semantic based indexing and fuzzy relevance model. In addition to the statistical approach, we chose the semantic approach in indexing, lexical chains, because we assume it would improve the performance of the index term extraction. Furthermore, we combined the semantic based indexing with the fuzzy model, which finds out the exact relevance of the user preference and index terms. The proposed system works as follows: First, the presented system indexes documents by the efficient index term extraction method using lexical chains. And then, if a user tends to retrieve the information from the indexed document collection, the extended IR model calculates and ranks the relevance of user query. user preference and index terms by some metrics. When we experimented each module, semantic based indexing and extended fuzzy model. it gave noticeable results. The combination of these modules is expected to improve the information retrieval performance.

  • Information retrieval systems for structured documents which are written in SGML or XML support partial retrieval of document. In order to efficiently process queries based on document structures, low memory overhead for indexing, quick response time for queries, supports to powerful types of user queries, and minimal updates of index structure for document updates are required. This paper suggests the Global Document Instance Tree(GDIT) and proposes an effective indexing scheme and query processing algorithms based on the GDIT. The indexing scheme keeps up indexing and retrieval effciency and also guarantees minimal updates of the index structure when document structures are updated.
