  • Cudrania tricuspidata Bereau (Moraceae) have been used for anti-inflammatory, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-hypertensive and anti-diabetic activities. In order to investigate the efficacy of antioxidant activity, the bio-activity guided fraction and isolation of Biologically active substance were performed. $H_{2}O,\;30\%,\;60\%,\;100%$ MeOH and acetone fractions were examined on the antioxidant activity by DPPH method. It was shown that $30\%,\;60\%,\;100\%$ MeOH fractions have significantly antioxidant activity. From $30\%$ MeOH fraction, two dihydroflavonoid glycosides dihydroquercetin 7-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (I), dihydrokaempferol 7-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (V) were isolated and $60\%$ MeOH fraction, six flavonoids including quercetin 3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranosyl($1\rightarrow6$)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (II), quercetin 3-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (III), quercetin 7-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (IV), kaempferol 3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranosyl($1\rightarrow6$)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (VI), kaempferol 3-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (VII), kaempferol 7-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (VIII) were isolated. To investigate the antioxidant activities of each compounds, we measured radical scavening activity with DPPH method and anti-lipid peroxidative efficacy on low density lipoprotein (LDL) with TBARS assay. Four compounds of quercetin glycosides (I, II, III, IV) showed significant antioxidant activity.

  • In this study, we examined the effects of Angelica keiskei (AK) in rats, in order to evaluate tissue quercetin concentrations and serum lipid profile changes. Dried AK powder was added to a regular chow at a 5% level, and fed for 8 weeks to male rats. AK significantly lowered serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, while it increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. However, AK did not influence serum triglyceride levels. Two antioxidant flavonoids present in AK, quercetin and its glycoside isoquercitrin, were detected in the serum and liver of the rat. However, another quercetin glycoside, hyperoside, was not detected in either the serum or liver despite its presence in the diet. These results indicate that AK seems to alter serum lipid concentrations, possibly through the body's absorption of certain quercetin glycosides.

  • In the previous study, we reported the antioxidative activity of Equisetum arvense extracts. In this study, its inhibitory effect on elastase and components were investigated. Aglycone fractions obtained from the deglycosylation reaction of ethylacetate fraction among the Equisetum arvense extracts, showed 4 bands and 4 peaks in TLC and HPLC experiments, respectively. Four components were identified as luteolin(composition ratio, 19.12%), quercetin(12.87), apigenin(15.81) and kaempferol(52.20). TLC chromatogram of ethylacetate fraction of Equisetum arvense extract revealed 7 bands and HPLC chromatogram showed 8 peaks, which were identified as kaempferol-3,7-O-diglucoside(composition ratio, 15.74%), luteolin-5-O-glucoside(galuteolin, 11.91), apigenin-5-O-glucoside(12.91), kaempferol-3-O-glucoside(astragalin, 27.94), quercetin-glycoside(10.81, structure was not determined), kaempferol-glycoside (12.33, structure was not determined), luteolin(3.72) and apigenin(4.62) in the order of elution time. The inhibitory effect of aglycone fraction on elastase($IC_{50}$, $9.8{\mu}g/mL$) was very high. But ethylacetate fraction(flavonoid glycosides) rarely exhibited the inhibitory activity on elastase. Combined with the previous results of the antioxidative activity of Equisetum arvense extracts, it is concluded that the inhibitory activity on elastase of the aglycone fraction could be applicable to new functional cosmetics for smoothing wrinkles.

  • In this study, Kombucha, a fermented drink by adding beneficial bacteria to green tea or black tea with sugar, was classified using column chromatography, and the presence or absence of quercetin glycoside, a type of flavonoids, was confirmed through TLC. In addition, the anti-pollution effect of protecting and improving the skin from pollution was confirmed using the fraction. Keratinocytes were treated with K-QG to confirm the cell viability, showing a survival rate of 90% or more up to a concentration of 100 ㎍/mL, and the cell viability by benzo[e]pyrene and fine dust stimulation to see the anti-pollution effect was measured. At 100 ㎍/mL, the improvement rates were about 68.79% and 50.68%, respectively. In addition, as a result of confirming the expression of AhR activated by benzo[a]pyrene through Western blot, it showed an inhibition rate of about 31.08% at 100 ㎍/mL compared to the control group. Through the results of this study, K-QG is thought to be valuable as an anti-pollution functional material, protecting and improving skin irritated from benzopyrene and fine dust.

The leaves of Rubus coreanum were extracted with 80% acetone. The extracts were separated by Ambellite XAD-2, Sephadex LH-20. MCI-gel CHP 20P and Cosmosil 75 C$_{18}$ OPN. And three flavonoids were isolated. The structures of these compounds were elucidated as quercetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glueuronopyranoside(l). quercetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glueuronopyranosyl methyl ester(2), quercetin-3-O-${\beta}$-D-xylopyranosyl-(2${\rightarrow}$1)-${\beta}$-glucopyranoside(3) on the basis of physicochemical and spectroscopic evidences.

  • Seven antioxidative flavonoids were isolated from Jindalrae flowers (Rhododendron mnonulatum Turcz.), an edible plant in Korea. These compounds were identified as afzelin, ampelopsin, catechin, myricetin, myricitrin, quercetin and quercitrin on the basis of IR, UV, FAB-MS, $^1H\;NMR,\;and\;^{13}C\;NMR$ data. These compounds were consisted of two flavonols, three flavonol glycosides, a flavane, and a dihydroflavonol. The flavonol glycosides (14.4 g) present in th ethyl ether and ethyl acetate fractions comprised up to 82% of their total flavonoid amount (17.6 g) finally recovered by means of polyamide C-200 column chromatography, preparative TLC, recrystallization, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The antioxidant activities were measured in an ethanol solution of linoleic acid in the presence of ferric thiocyanate. The antioxidant efficiency increased in the order of afzrlin<$\alpha-tocopherol$
