  • Acoustic emission (AE) was originally developed for non-destructive testing of static structure, but over the year its application has been extended to health monitoring of rotating machines and bearings. It offers the advantage of earlier defect detection in comparison with monitoring bearing. This study was diagnosed low-speed machine which had a fault bearing for early detection by AE. And the artificial faults in a experimentation bearing was made for the bearing signals from difference speed and load were compared and analyzed by AE.

  • This paper presents a new approach to the design of a rough fuzzy controller for the control loop of the SVC (static VAR system) in a two area power system for stability enhancement with particular emphasis on providing effective damping for oscillatory instabilities. The performances of the rough fuzzy and the conventional fuzzy controller are compared with that of the conventional PI controller for a variety of transient disturbances, highlighting the effectiveness of the rough fuzzy controller in damping the inter-area oscillations. The effect of the rough fuzzy controller in improving the CCT (critical clearing time) of the two area system is elaborated in this paper as well.

  • The damage level in structures (global scale), elements (intermediate scale) and sections (local scale) can be evaluated using a single parameter called the "Damage Index". Part of the damage attributed to the local scale relates to the damage sustained by the materials of which the section is made. This study investigates the damage of concrete subjected to monotonic compressive loading using four different damage models - one proposed here for the first time and three other well-known models. The analytical results show that the proposed model is promising yet simple and effective for evaluating the damage of concrete. The proposed damage model of concrete with its promising characteristics indicated, appears to be a useful tool in the damage assessment of structures made of concrete.

  • Contemporary organizations strive for customer agility through the deployment of digital technologies on customer-focused operations to build enduring customer relationships, with mobile apps being one of its prominent examples. Drawing on prior agility and ECT literature, this study proposes a model to examine customers' view of a firm's customer agility. Our empirical test of conceptual model from data collected in a field study from 128 customers demonstrated that the conceptual model offers good explanation for customers' view of a firm's customer agility through relationships among customer expectations-customer perceived firm's responsiveness-satisfaction. Data were analyzed using PLS, polynomial modeling, and response surface methodology to examine the relationships between customers' digital interactions with the firm, influence of digitized interactions on customer expectations, customers' evaluation of firm's responsiveness, and subsequent customer satisfaction.

  • Cable supported structures offer an elegant and economical solution for bridging over long spans with resultant low material content and ease of construction. In this paper, a model of shallow cable supported footbridge with reverse profiled pre-tensioned cables is treated and its load deformation characteristics under different quasi-static loads are investigated. Effects of important parameters such as cable sag and pre-tension are also studied. Numerical results performed on a 3D model show that structural stiffness of this bridge (model) depends not only on the cable sag and cross sectional areas of the cables, but also on the pre-tension in the reverse profiled cables. The tension in the top supporting cables can be adjusted to a high level by the pre-tension in the reverse profiled bottom cables, with the total horizontal force in the bridge structure remaining reasonably constant. It is also evident that pre-tensioned horizontally profiled cables can greatly increase the lateral horizontal stiffness and suppress the lateral horizontal deflection induced by eccentric vertical loads.

  • Characteristics of solutions of softening plasticity are discussed in this article. The localized and non-localized solutions are obtained for a three-bar truss and their stability is evaluated with the aid of the second-order work. Beyond the bifurcation point, the single stable loading path splits into several post-bifurcation paths and the second-order work exhibits several competing minima. Among the multiple post-bifurcation equilibrium states, the localized solutions correspond to the minimum points of the second-order work, while the non-localized solutions correspond to the saddles and local maximum points. To determine the real post-bifurcation path, it is proposed that the structure should follow the path corresponding to the absolute minimum point of the second-order work. The proposal is further proved equivalent to Bazant's path criterion derived on a thermodynamics basis.

  • The bulk of the world's goat population is found in South-East Asia and Africa, where goats are the major source of meat production. Unfortunately, lack of an organized goat meat industry and marketing structure in developing countries is primarily responsible for their poor export earnings compared to those in developed countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Goat meat is leaner than meat from other domestic red meat species as well as being comparable in terms of its nutritional constituents. Furthermore, there are few, if any, religious or cultural taboos limiting the consumption of goat meat. Development of a carcass grading system and a suitable infrastructure in developing countries are some of the key requirements needed to establish a sustainable goat meat industry in the world. With an increase in demand by consumers for low-fat red meat alternatives, the future of the goat meat industry looks promising.

  • In this study, sand cast AZ91E and zirconium grain refined MEZ are representative of two typical groups of magnesium alloys: those containing aluminium and those containing no aluminium but with zirconium as a grain refiner. The corrosion performance of these two alloys was evaluated and compared in 5%wt NaCI solution through measurements of weight loss and polarisation curves and examination of microstructure. Corrosion damage of AZ91E was deeper and more localised than that of MEZ, while MEZ had a lower rate of cathodic hydrogen evolution and a higher rate of anodic dissolution than AZ91E. These differences in behaviour can be related to the differences in microstructure and chemical composition between the two alloys.

  • Recently introduced by the major credit card associations as replacements for the decommissioned SET and 3DSET protocols, the new payment models, 3DSecure and UCAF/SPA, have been designed to provide online merchants with a solution to an existing problem in online credit card transactions - the lack of an effective and efficient means of authenticating cardholders. The expected benefits arising from this added level of security from the merchant′s perspective are increased consumer confidence, significant reduction in the levels of fraud and charge backs and "liability shift". Using data gleaned from preliminary interviews, discussion forums and promotional material, we present a critical analysis of the potential barriers and facilitators that will impact on the widespread traction of these programs in the marketplace in the coming years.

  • Load forecasting has always been essential to the operation and planning of power systems in deregulated electricity markets. Various methods have been proposed for load forecasting, and the neural network is one of the most widely accepted and used techniques. However, to obtain more accurate results, more information is needed as input variables, resulting in huge computational costs in the learning process. In this paper, to reduce training time in multi-layer perceptron-based short-term load forecasting, a graphics processing unit (GPU)-based computing method is introduced. The proposed approach is tested using the Korea electricity market historical demand data set. Results show that GPU-based computing greatly reduces computational costs.
