  • The turbulence structure of e. tip vortex generated by e. fixed wing was investigated with the use of two-dimensional laser Doppler velocimetry. The velocity field, composed of circumferential end axial components, was measured on the vertical section to the vortex trail, located at 2C downstream from the wing tip in the incoming flow condition of $Re=2.24{\times}10^5$. A quasi 3-dimensional measurement technique by use of 2-dimensional LDV system was suggested for Reynolds stresses and the higher moments. The validity of this technique was confirmed with the uncertainty analysis. The budget of the turbulence kinetic energy was analyzed by those results in the radial direction of the vortex core. It is resulted that the production is to be very likely balanced with the dissipation in most range of the vortex core.

  • The Sirocco fan performance and its three-dimensional flow characteristics were numerically predicted by STAR-CD software. Turbulent flow computations were performed using approximately 500,000 mesh points, and the performance results of two computational methods, transient analysis and quasi-static analysis were compared with experimental data. At present, our attention was focused on localizing the three-dimensional flow characteristics of the Sirocco fin, especially the structure of the secondary flow in the scroll and the through-flow characteristics of the Sirocco fan blades. Also, for an optimization, the scroll passage was tilted with 10 degrees to change the flow characteristics and improve the performance of the Sirocco fan.

  • Cutler showed some duality results about Hausdorff and packing dimensions of a measure on a compact set in Euclidean space if its s-dimensional Hausdorff measure or packing measure is positive. We show that the similar results in a perturbed Cantor set hold according to its quasi s-dimensional Hausdorff measure or packing measure and we find concrete measures in this case while Cutler showed the existence of such measures. Finally under some strong condition, we give a concrete measure whose Hausdorff and packing dimensions are the same as those of the perturbed Cantor set without the condition that it has positive s-dimensional Hausdorff or packing measures.

  • A three-dimensional calculation is presented on the basis of Wu's theory of quasi-three-dimensional flow in turbo impellers. For the calculation of flow on the Blade-to-Blade stream surface, the finite element method is applied. In this work it is shown that the Kutta condition and the periodicity can be satisfied rationally by the technique of combining a basic through flow in the flow passage and a circulating flow around the blade. The results of numerical calculation are compared with those of the exact solution of the Gostelow's straight cascade and of the experimental results of pressure distribution on the rotating blade surface. It is found that the numerical solutions are in good agreement with the theoretical solution and the experimental results.

  • Railway bridges are subject to dynamic loads generated by the interaction between moving vehicles and the bridge structures. These dynamic loads result in response fluctuations in bridge members. To investigate the real dynamic behavior of the bridge, therefore, a number of analytical and experimental Investigations should be carried out. In this paper, a train/track/bridge interaction analysis program for evaluating the dynamic characteristics of bridges due to KTX operation in terms of structural safety, operational safety and passenger comfort is developed. To build a practical model of train/track/bridge, Hertzian spring for wheel/rail contact modeling and Winkler element for ballast are applied. This program also used torsional degree of freedom and constraint equation based on geometrical relationship in order to take into consideration three-dimensional eccentricity effect due to the operation on double track through quasi-three dimensional analysis. To verify the developed Program, comparison has been made between the measured results and those of simulation of the typical PSC box bridge(2@40m=80m) of the KHSR bridges.

  • A fundamental solution for the transient, quasi-static, plane problems of linear viscoelasticity is introduced for a specific material. An integral equation has been found for any problem as a result of dynamic reciprocal identity which is written between this fundamental solution and the problem to be solved. The formulation is valid for the first, second and mixed boundary-value problems. This integral equation has been solved by BEM and algorithm of the BEM solution is explained on a sample, mixed boundary-value problem. The forms of time-displacement curves coincide with literature while time-surface traction curves being quite different in the results. The formulation does not have any singularity. Generalized functions and the integrals of them are used in a different form.

  • This paper presets experimental and analytical studies of ultimate strength of [$[30_2/-30_2/90]_S$ carbon/epoxy laminates with free-edge delamination under uniaxial tension. We performed tensile teat far laminates with Telflon inserted on interfaces to simulate initial free-edge delamination, The experiment reveals that extensional stiffness of the laminate decreases by the initiation of the delamination, and that strength of the laminate without delamination is smaller than that of the laminates with delamination. Generalized quasi-three delamination finite element analysis, which employs energy release rate and maximum stress criteria, predicts the ultimate strength of the laminates with sufficient accuracy.

  • This paper presents a method to design the waveform of a back electromotive force (back EMF) of an axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor using printed circuit board (PCB) windings. When the magnetization distribution of permanent magnet (PM) is given, the magnetic field in the air gap region is calculated by the quasi three dimensional (3D) space harmonic analysis (SHA) method. Once the flux density distribution in the winding region is determined, the required shape of the back EMF can be obtained by adjusting the winding distribution. This can be done by modifying the distance between patterns of PCB to control the harmonics in the winding distribution. The proposed method is verified by finite element analysis (FEA) results and it shows the usefulness of the method in eliminating a specific harmonic component in the back EMF waveform of a motor.

  • Quasi-phase-match (QPM) can be realized by means of one-dimensional spatial modulation of second-order nonlinear susceptibility and has advantages over the conventional bulk phase-matching method because QPM can not only utilize the largest component of second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor, but also can circumvent walk-off effect. • This paper presents an original hyperbolic (first present model) and parabolic (second present model) shear and normal deformation theory for the bending analysis to account for the effect of thickness stretching in functionally graded sandwich plates. Indeed, the number of unknown functions involved in these presents theories is only five, as opposed to six or even greater numbers in the case of other shear and normal deformation theories. The present theory accounts for both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a hyperbolic variation of ail displacements across the thickness and satisfies the stress-free boundary conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate without requiring any shear correction factor. It is evident from the present analyses; the thickness stretching effect is more pronounced for thick plates and it needs to be taken into consideration in more physically realistic simulations. The numerical results are compared with 3D exact solution, quasi-3-dimensional solutions and with other higher-order shear deformation theories, and the superiority of the present theory can be noticed.
