In this study, cold crack susceptibility of high strength steel (ABS EH32 Steel) welded zone with shielded metal are welding was investigated by tensile restraint cracking test method. Effects of diffusible hydrogen content on root cracking, lower critical stress, crack initiation and fracture mode, hardness value distribution of welded zone and fractograph were mainly investigated. Following conclusions are made: 1. In the view of the lower critical stress level, wet electrode, containing much diffusible hydrogen content shows lower value than dried electrode. 2. Hardness value(Hv 5kg) in Heat Affected Zone of wet electrode is higher than that of dried electrode caused by hydrogen embrittlement. 3. In the case of wet electrode, root crack is initiated and propagated in Heat Affected Zone and then propagated to weld metal, but using of dried electrode, root crack is initiated in Heat Affected Zone and propagated to weld metal without propagating in HAZ. 4. For wet electrode, quasi-cleavage fracture mode is majorly observed on the fracture surface of HAZ and partially of weld metal due to hydrogen embrittlement.
The effects of temperature and strain rate on the I-SCC behaviors of Zircaloy-4 were investigated by constant load test at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and constant elongation rate test at 300, 350 and 40$0^{\circ}C$ in 3.34mg $I_2$/㎤. The results showed that I-SCC susceptibility increased as the strain rate decreased or the temperature increased. The empirical relation between the stress and the time to failure at 30$0^{\circ}C$ was given by 1/ $t_{f}$∝exp (0.3$\sigma$/$\sigma$$_{UTS}$-31.5) When the I-SCC susceptibility was expressed by the ratio of fracture energy in iodine atmosphere to that in the inert atmosphere, severe I-SCC susceptibility was found near 7.6$\times$10$^{-6}$ sec at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and the maximum point of I-SCC susceptibility tended to shift to the higher strain rate with increasing the temperature. The quasi-cleavage fracture was observed in I-SCC fracture surface. From these results, it was certain that the film repture step was involved as an important process in the I-SCC mechanism of Zircaloy-4.4.
This study was to investigate the effects of stress ratio and anisotropy on Fatigue Crack Propagation(FCP) behavior of rolled magnesium alloy AZ31B. The experimental materials were a Mg-Al-Zn magnesium alloy. The FCP test was conducted on compact tension specimen by a servo-hydraulic fatigue testing machine in air at room temperature. Compact tension specimens were prepared from the extruded parallel and vertical rolling direction. The test condition was frequency of 10Hz and sinusoidal load stress ratios are 0.1 and 0.7. The FCP rates was automatically measured by a compliance method. In the case of the FCP of AZ31B, the FCP of both direction of LT and TL by anisotropy of specimens are almost same value. In lower stress ratio, the FCP of the LT, TL specimens are increased in lower ${\Delta}K$ region but higher ${\Delta}K$ regions are almost same value. Finally, the result of observed the surface crack, it expressed the quasi-cleavage fracture in lower ${\Delta}K$ region and straight mark on the aspect of the facet in high ${\Delta}K$ region.

The aim of this study is to investigate the hydrogen embrittlement of Zr-2.5Nb CANDU pressure tube at room temperature. The transverse tensile and fracture toughness tests were performed at various hydrogen concentrations using transverse tensile specimens and CCT (curved compact tension) specimens. These specimens were directly machined from the pressure tube retaining original curvatures. Based on the results of these tests. the hydrogen embrittlement phenomenon was clearly observed and fracture toughness parameters of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube materials such as, $K_{J(0.2)}$.$J_{ML}$.dJ/da, were dramatically decreased with the increasement of the hydrogen concentration. From microscopic observation by SEM and TEM, it was also revealed that various shapes dimples, fissures and quasi-cleavage were found at the hydrogen-absorbed materials with hydrides while traditional shape dimples were generally located at the as-received materials Through the comparison of the hydride and fissure lengths with the hydrogen concentration the new evaluation method of hydrogen embrittlement was suggested.
Fatigue crack propagation rate and threshold characteristics of the SA516/70 steel which is used for the low temperature pressure vessels, were studied in the room temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and low temperature ranges of $-10^{\circ}C,\;-30^{\circ}C,\;-60^{\circ}C\;and\;-80^{\circ}C$ with stress ratio of R=0.1. In the logarithmic relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate($d{\alpha}/dN$) and stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$, the linear relationship was obtained up to $d{\alpha}/dN=4.425{\times}10^4mm/cycle$ in the same of room temperature, but in low temperature case, the relationship was extended to the range of low crack propagation rate. The fractured specimens were examined by SEM. Tested results showed that specimen failed at low temperature exhibit the quasi-cleavage fracture formation however considerable ductility proceed final fracture.
A study was undertaken to determine the influence of welding variables such as shielding and plasma gases, torch standoff, travel speed and heat input, etc. on the quality of plasma arc welds in Zircaloy-4 sheet, 2mm thick. Effect of shielding gases and their flow rates on the mechanical properties of Zircaloy-4 welds by plasma arc welding were determined in terms of tensile, bardness and bend tests. The microstructure and fracture surface of Zircaloy-4 welds were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopies. In addition, the causes of porosity and undercut in plasma arc welds of Zircaloy-4 were also investigated. Zircaloy-4 weld bead width and depth by helium shielding gas showed a wider and deeper than those by argon. It was found that Zircaloy-4 welds with shielding gas of helium did dxhibit a little smoother and uniform weld beads than those with shielding gas of argon. It was also found that the optimum gas flow rates for Zircaloy-4 welding were 0.45l/min for plasma gas with Ar and 4.5 - 6 l/min for shielding gas with He. In addition, there was no big difference in the microstructure and fracture surface of the weld metals made by either Ar shielding gas or He shielding gas.
The effect of Ni addition, on the mechanical properties and fracture characteristics of Mo-Cu and Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ductile iron austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ and austempering temperatures of $250^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength, yield strength and hardness are decreased and elongation and impact value are increased in both Mo-Cu and Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed austempered ductile iron, with increased austempering temperature. According to the austempering temperature are increased, the amount of retained austenite are increased. Maximum value of fracture toughness is obtained at $350^{\circ}C$ austempering temperature at this condition, the amount of retained austenite came to 40% in Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ADI and 34% in Mo-Cu alloyed ADI. The fracture surface of ADI which had represented high toughness are showed a quasi-cleavage pattern and a dimple pattern with micro void. Comparing the fracture characteristics of Mo-Cu alloyed ADI with that of Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ADI, the latter was superior to the former.
Grey cast iron containing a small amount of Cu and Mo to improve the effect of heat treatment and microstructure were cast and them austenitized. After austenitizing the specimens of castings were austempered at 250$^{\circ}C$, 300$^{\circ}C$ and 350$^{\circ}C$. The effects of matrix structures on mechanical properties and fracture characteristics at the different austempering temperature were investigated. Tensile strength, hardness and impact toughness of austempered grey cast iron showed maximum valve 359 MPa, 321 HB, 3.9 CVN respectively at the lowest austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$. $K_{IC}$ of gref cast iron at a austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$, showed maximum 44 MPa.$m^{1/2}$ even though the amount of retained austenite in it is only 16%. This mainly comes from the refinement of the retained austenite. Quasi-cleavage pattern with a little fit of fibrous pattern was shown on the fractured surface of austempered grey cast iron at all of the temperatures tested.
Recently, ultra-high strength bolts have been developed for weight lightening of a vehicle and fuel efficiency. However, some amount of diffusible H is absorbed into the bolt during its manufacturing process so that H embrittlement (HE) often occurs particularly in high strength bolts with a tempered martensitic microstructure. This brings attention to ultra-high strength pearlitic bolts with a high resistance to HE. Therefore, in this study the HE resistance of the 1.6 GPa grade pearlitic bolt was evaluated through tightening tests and slow strain rate tests (SSRTs), and fracture surfaces of failed bolts were comparatively observed. A critical H content for the tightening test turned out to be ~0.23-0.35 mass ppm. The bolt with a diffusible H content of ~0.35 mass ppm was fractured during the tightening test, showing a quasi-cleavage fracture surface, indicating the occurrence of HE. In addition, the bolt underwent premature elastic failure during the SSRT. This implies that the HE resistance of high strength bolts can be evaluated by both tightening test and SSRT.

To define the causes of cladding degradation which can take place during the operation of nuclear power plants, it is required to develop the new fracture toughness test of spent fuel cladding. The fracture toughness of Zircaloy-4 cladding was estimated using the recently developed KAERI embedded Charpy (KEC) specimen. Axially notched KEC specimens cut directly from unirradiated fuel claddings, were tested in a way similar to the standard toughness test method of a Single Edge Bending (SEB) specimen. The results of KEC fracture toughness test at room temperatures were discussed and compared with those of the previous other studies. In conclusions, even though the KEC fracture toughness test of nuclear fuel claddings was easier and more reliable than those developed earlier, the results from the cladding fracture tests were not the material characteristics but the specific fracture parameters which were deeply related to the specification of claddings. In addition, the phenomenon of a thickness yielding was not observed from the fracture surface. It was closely related to the fact that the plane strain condition of the KEC specimen was changed to the plane stress condition during crack advancing. It was also supported by the fractographic evidence that the formation of ductile dimples at the crack initiation became the similar appearance such as a quasi-cleavage after the sufficient crack advancing.
