  • This study describes (1) the impact of positive sampling artifacts caused by not only a filter-based sampling, but also a denuder-based sampling in the determination of particle-phase organic carbon (POC), (2) the effect of sample flow rate on positive artifacts, and (3) an optimum flow rate that provides a minimized negative sampling artifact for the denuder-based sampling method. To achieve the goals of this study, four different sampling media combinations were employed: (1) Quartz filter-alone (Q-alone), (2) quartz filter behind quartz-fiber filter (QBQ), (3) quartz filter and quartz filter behind Teflon filter (Q-QBT), and (4) quartz filter behind carbon-based denuder (Denuder-Q). The measurement of ambient POC was carried out in an urban area. In addition, to determine gas-phase OC (GOC) removal efficiency of the denuder, a Teflon filter and a quartz filter were deployed upstream and downstream of the denuder, respectively with varying sample flow rates: 5, 10, 20, and 30 LPM. It was found that Q-alone sampling configuration showed a higher POC than QBQ, Q-QBT, and Denuder-Q by 12%, 28%, and 23%, respectively at a sample flow rate of 20 LPM due to no correction for positive artifact caused by adsorption of GOC onto the filter. A lower quantity of GOC was collected from the backup quartz filter on QBQ than that from Q-QBT. This was because GOC was not in equilibrium with that adsorbed on the front quartz filter of QBQ during the sampling period. It is observed that the loss of particle number and mass across the denuder increases with decreasing sample flow rate. The contribution o f positive arti facts to POC decreased with increasing sample flow rate, showing 29%, 25%, and 22% for 10, 20, and 30 LPM, respectively. The 20 LPM turns out to be the optimum sample flow rate for both filter and denuder-based POC sampling.

  • This study describes the impact of positive sampling artifact caused by a filter-based sampling in the determination of ambient organic carbon (OC). Three different sampling media combinations were employed for this investigation: (1) Quartz filter-alone (Q-alone), (2) quartz filter behind quartz-fiber filter (QBQ), and (3) quartz filter and quartz filter behind Teflon filter (Q-QBT). The measurement of ambient OC was carried out at a semi-urban site near oceanside at the end of November of 2008. It was found that Q-alone sampling configuration resulted in a higher OC than QBQ and Q-QBT by 14% and 28%, respectively due to no correction for positive artifact caused by adsorption of gas-phase OC onto the filter. A lower quantity of OC was collected from the backup quartz filter on QBQ than that from Q-QBT. A possible explanation is that the front quartz filter of QBQ was not fully saturated with gas-phase OC during the sampling period, allowing smaller amount of gas-phase OC to reach the backup quartz filter. The contribution of positive artifact to $PM_{2.5}$ mass was approximately 2.15 ${\mu}g/m^3$ which is equivalent to 6% in terms of Q-QBT sampling configuration. The positive artifact was found to be more dominated during summer than during winter, showing temperature dependence. It was concluded that Q-QBT sampling configuration offers less impact of positive artifact on ambient OC sampling than QBQ in quantification of OC.

  • To establish the Fourier-Transform Infra-Red spectrophotometry(FTIR) Direct-On-Filter(DOF) technique as a useful analytical method for quartz in respirable dust samples, an influence of the kaolinite should be corrected. Respirable dust, created in a dust chamber containing the standard material of quartz and kaolinite were collected using a cyclone equipped with a 25 mm, $0.8\;{\mu}m$ pore size DM filter as a collection medium. This study was designed to compare three methods of correction for kaolinite when quantifying the content of quartz, including the least square, the optimum choice and the spectral subtraction methods. The content of quartz in the respirable dust samples was overestimated by 6.2% when mixed with kaolinite(35.5% by weight). The content of quartz containing kaolinite(72.8% by weight) were overestimated by 32%. The spectral subtraction method underestimated the quartz content by 1.5%, while the other two correction methods, the optimum choice and the least square method, overestimated the quartz content by 1.9% to 6.4% and 0.04 to 1.1%, respectively. The results of this study are suggested that, when correcting for effects of kaolinite on quantitative analysis of quartz in respirable dust by FTIR direct-on-filter method, the least square method produce the most unbiased results be compared with those of other correction methods.

  • To establish the Fourier-transform infra-red spectrophotometry (FTIR) direct-on-filter(DOF) technique as a useful analytical method for quartz in respirable dust samples, influence of the interference should be corrected. This study was designed to compare three methods of correction for cristobalite when quantifying the content of quartz, including the least square, the optimum choice and the spectral subtraction methods. Respirable dust, created in a dust chamber containing the standard material of quartz, cristobalite was collected using a cyclone equipped with a 25 mm, $0.8{\mu}m$ pore size DM filter as a collection medium. The quartz weights overestimated about 100% when mixed of cristobalite by measure using 799 cm-1 absorption peak of quartz. The quartz weights appeared over estimated by optimum choice, spectral subtraction and least square method in mixtures of 33% cristobalite were 90.3%, 60.1% and about 4.3%, respectively. The least square method have been adopted to correction methods of cristobalite and satisfactory results have been obtained. The results of this study suggest that, when correcting for effect of cristobalite on quantitative analysis of quartz in respirable dust by FTIR direct-on-filter method, the least square method produce the most unbiased results compared with those of other correction methods.

  • Although the Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectrophotometric Direct on Filter(FTIR-DOF) method is a useful analytical technique for quantifying quartz content in respirable dust samples, a number of analytical problems must be taken into consideration such as, to name only a few, inhomogeneous deposition of particles, level of environmental humidity, uneven surface of the filter, and interfering minerals in the sample. This study was designed to select the most suitable wavelength and proper filter material for the method, and to investigate effects of humidity and inhomogeneous deposition of particles on the filter. Samples of respirable dust, created in a dust chamber containing standard material of quartz, were collected using a cyclone equipped with a 25mm filter as a collection medium. The results were as follows; 1. Among seven (7) commercially available filters tested for the FTIR-DOF method, the DM 800 filter showed the best analytical performance having the lowest background absorbance bands and no overlapping peaks at 799, 779, and $695cm^{-1}$. 2. The variations of absorbance due to humidity ranged from 1.0% to 3.3% for $799cm^{-1}$, 1.0% to 3.3% for $779cm^{-1}$, and 8.9%~20.9% for $695cm^{-1}$ peaks, respectively. The $699cm^{-1}$ peak was proved to be most vulnerble to environmental humidity for quantitative analysis of quartz. 3. As for effects of inhomogeneous deposition of samples, the highest variation of absorbance of 10.9% ($13.5{\mu}g$) was observed when using the 695cm-1. The variations of absorbance from the other two peaks, 799 and $779cm^{-1}$, ranged from 1.2 to 3.2%, and 1.4 to 4.1%, respectively. Therefore, the $799cm^{-1}$ peak was considered to be most reliable for quantitative analysis of quartz. The results of this study suggest that, for quantitative analysis of quartz in the respirable dust samples, use of the $799cm^{-1}$ peak can minimize the influence of environmental humidity and inhomogeneous deposition of particles on the filter. The FTIR-DOF method, if adopted for routine analysis of quartz in the respirable dust samples, could save sample preparation time and efforts substantially and also could increase analytical throughputs. Since use of the $799cm^{-1}$ peak is prone to be affected by interferences in the sample, further research on minimizing the effects is needed.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to estimate quartz concentrations in the airborne respirable dust from concrete manufacturing industries and to compare performance of two analytical methods, direct on filter(DOF) and the transfer methods in the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR). Methods: Total 36 area samples were collected from 8 concrete manufacturing industries. Each respirable dust sample was collected by a 25 mm cassette attached to a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone. The quartz content was estimated using the intensity of the absorption peak of quartz at $799cm^{-1}$ by FTIR. Results: By the comparison of quartz content in respirable dust between the two methods, the results of using DOF method were higher than that of transfer method. And the result of quartz concentrations in respirable dust estimated by DOF method were mostly higher than those by transfer method. Statistically significant difference of quartz concentrations in respirable dust were not found in shakeout, input, loading and transporting processes by two methods. But quartz concentrations in the molding process had the statistically significant difference between DOF and transfer method. Conclusions: The results of the study is suggested that, it be needed to correct the influence of the interferences in order to establish the DOF method when interfering minerals have an effect on quantitative analysis of quartz in respirable dust by the direct on filter method with FTIR.

  • This study was carried out to establish the standardized analysis method in order to decide accurate concentrations of hazardous metals in the air. Acid decomposition method used usually was compared to microwave digestion method. Comparing results of tested background concentration in blank filter, we found that the magnitude of element concentration was Na, Ca, K, Mg, Al and Ba by order. The element concentrations of Glass fiber filter were higher than those of Quartz fiber filter, and the number of undetected components in Glass fiber filter was lower than that in Quartz fiber filter. Thus it is supposed that the concentration of background elements in Glass fiber filter was higher than those in Quartz fiber filter The extraction rate of microwave digestion method was superior to those of acid decomposition method during the test of blank filter as well as SRM of NIST. In case of the SRM of NIST, the average extraction efficiency of acid decomposition Method and microwave pretreatment is 53.8∼82.7%, 81.3∼97.1%, respectively. This result might be caused by the closed system of Microwave, which make outflow and loss of components less. Also microwave digestion method has other merits such as the minimization of time, reagents, and contamination. Furthermore, if the extraction condition, extraction time and used acids are optimized, the better results will be represented.

  • The size of various alumina ceramics used in semiconductor and display industry is also required to increase with increase in wafer and panel size. In this research, large alumina ceramics was fabricated by filter pressing of alumina slurry using commercial powder and thereafter sintering at $1600^{\circ}C$ in gas furnace. The characteristics of large alumina ceramics thereby were compared to those of small alumina ceramics prepared by pressure forming such as uniaxial pressing and CIP. Careful control of properties of alumina slurry and filter pressing made the fabrication of large alumina ceramics possible, and its characteristics were equivalent to those of small alumina ceramics. The large alumina ceramics, prepared by sintering the green body of 63% relative density at $1600^{\circ}C$, exhibited both dense microstructure corresponding to 98.5% of relative density and 99.8% of high purity as in starting powder.
