  • We fabricated self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) onto quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) using viologen, which has been widely used as electron acceptor and electron transfer mediator. The viologen derivative exist in three redox states, namely. These redox reactions are highly reversible and can be cycled many times without significant side reactions, respectively. We studied the characteristics of charge transfer using different electrolyte solutions by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). From the data, the redox peak currents were nearly equal charges during redox reaction and existed to an excellent linear interrelation between the scan rates and first redox peak currents. The redox reactions of viologen were highly reversible and the EQCM has been employed to monitor the electrochemically induced adsorption of SAMs during the redox reactions.

  • Titanium oxide nanotube arrays were fabricated by the anodization of pure titanium thin film deposited at $500^{\circ}C$ on silicon substrates. The titania nanotubes were grown by anodization in nonaqueous-base electrolytes at different potentials between 5 V and 30 V. $TiO_2$ nanotube array with a small pore diameter of 40 nm and long titanium oxide layer of $4\;{\mu}m$ was obtained. The $TiO_2$ nanotube array was used as a porous electrode for quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Nanoporous morphology of electrode will increase the sensitivity of microbalance.

  • The radioactive wastes generated from the nuclear industry can be divided into the forms of solid, liquid, or gas. Radioactive methyl iodide, a gaseous radioactive waste, is absorbed by activated carbon with 5 wt% of Trietylenediamine (1,4-diazania-bicycle[2.2.2]octane, TEDA) impregnated on the surface. Methyl Iodide ($CH_3I$) is combined chemically with TEDA (the final product : I-TEDA). To recycle radioactive activated carbon, removal of I-TEDA from activated carbon is needed. A wet method for recycling impregnated active carbon was developed to remove radioactive I-TEDA using an acetonitrile solution, which produces lots of secondary wastes. We suggest the removal of I-TEDA by supercritical carbon dioxide with co-solvents. In this experiment, we used a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for measuring the removal rate of the I-TEDA. From the experimental results, methanol was found to be the optimum co-solvent, and the optimum conditions such as temperature, pressure, and co-solvent flow rate were obtained. Possibility of using supercritical fluid in the removal of I-TEDA from radioactive activated carbon was also discussed.

  • In this study, the measurement of physical properties of ethylene oxide-propylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of a zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of DEP-OSA82-AO zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that DEP32-OSA82-AO and DEP34-OSA82-AO surfactants provide better softening effect at a pH of acidic or neutral condition than at an alkaline condition. This result indicates that both surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of acidic or neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.

  • The use of preformed copolymers and their cross-linking have been attempted in order to improve the intrinsic fragility of monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and to make their technological applications. It has shown that an imidization followed a polyion-complexation can stabilize the LB films against heat and solvents. And, when the polymer structure was properly designed, concurrent removal of the alkyl tails together with imide formation could be accomplished. In this paper, the monolayers of the polymers which were polyion-complexed with PAA at the air-water interface can be transferred onto solid substrates such as porous fluorocarbon membranes filter and quartz crystal microbalance. The properties of the monolayers and the LB films will be discussed by .pi.-A isotherms, FT-IR, DSC, deposition ratio, QCM, and SEM. In addition, it was attempted to investigate the response characteristics of polymer LB films to the organic gases by the use of QCM.

  • We fabricated self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) onto quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) using viologen, which has been widely used as electron acceptor and electron transfer mediator. We determined the time dependence on resonant frequency shift during self-assembly process and observed the morphology of self-assembled monolayers by STM and investigated the electrochemical behavior of SAMs by cyclic voltammetry. Electrochemical deposition of viologen was investigated using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance(EQCM). The redox reactions of viologen were highly reversible and the EQCM has been employed to monitor the electrochemically induced adsorption of SAMs during the redok reactions. The total frequency change was about 9.5 Hz, and 7.1 Hz. From the data, we could know the mass change was about 10.16 ng and 7.60 ng, respectively. Finally, the EQCM has been employed to monitor the electrochemically induced adsorption of self-assembled monolayers on Au surfaces.

  • In this study, we investigate the deposition characteristics of merocyanine dye(MD) Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) film using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The MD optical system mixed with fatty acid was fabricated using LB method. And their optical characteristics were investigated using UV spectroscopy. The optical behavior of MD LB film was investigated asto thermal treatment. The resonant frequency and admittance was measured during dissociation of J-aggregate of MD LB film. As a result, it has been suggested that the J-aggregate dissociation in MD LB film by thermal treatment give rise to transformation of oscillation characteristics of quartz crystal.

  • Corrosion of silver by outgassed sulfur species from rubber has been investigated by means of quartz crystal microbalance technique (QCM) and cathodic reduction technique. Silver specimens were placed together with a rubber of predefined quantity in an enclosed environment. Corrosion progressed linearly with time and silver sulfide was found as the corrosion product during all the tests. No significant dependence on RH was observed, while the corrosion rate increased as temperature rose. Furthermore the corrosion rate increased logarithmically with the quantity of the rubber placed in the exposure environment. It may be suggested that the corrosion rate of silver is determined by the amount of outgassed sulfur species which is a function of temperature and the quantity of rubber contained in the exposure environment.

  • Al film(135.5 nm thick) with Pd film(39.6 nm thick) on the top of it was made by thermal evaporation method. Hydrogen absorption of Al/Pd film was measured by quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) method at room temperature. The sample was activated by hydrogen absorption and desorption cycling at room temperature. Hydrogen was introduced into the film by increasing hydrogen gas pressure step by step up to 640 torr at room temperature. Hydrogen concentration reached up to 25% at $5{\sim}10$ torr. But at high pressure the concentration decreased. This strange tendency was not understood yet. Further study is needed to find out the mechanism of hydrogen absorption in Al in Al/Pd film.
