  • In this paper, a novel rate control scheme for low delay video coding of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is proposed. The proposed scheme is developed by considering a new temporal prediction structure of HEVC. In the proposed scheme, the relationship between bit rate and quantization step is exploited firstly to formulate an accurate quadratic rate-quantization (R-Q) model. Secondly, a method of determining the quantization parameters (QPs) for the first frames within a group of pictures is proposed. Thirdly, an accurate frame-level bit allocation method is proposed for HEVC. Finally, based on the proposed R-Q model and the target bit allocated for the frame, the QPs are predicted for coding tree units by using rate-distortion (R-D) optimization. We compare our scheme against that of three other state-of-the-art rate control schemes. Experimental results show that the proposed rate control scheme can increase the Bjøntegaard delta peak signal-to-noise ratio by 0.65 dB and 0.09 dB on average compared with the JCTVC-I0094 and JCTVC-M0036 schemes, respectively, both of which have been implemented in an HEVC test model encoder; furthermore, the proposed scheme achieves a similar R-D performance to Wang's scheme, as well as obtaining the smallest bit rate mismatch error of all the schemes.

  • In a DCT coding, degradations called block artifact and mosquito noise are appeared in reconstructed pictures. They should be reduced in post processing after decoding without superabundant processing. However, an estimation of mosquito noise is rare because of its difficulty. To realize an estimation of mosquito noise level, we extract a block that mosquito noise will be easy to occur. Mosquito noise level is calculated at a selected side of the block. In this processing, only the sides of high probability block are used. Then, a block value is taken by averaging. Finally, the picture value is calculated by averaging of this. Estimation method is evaluated by using the MPEG-4 decoded pictures. Quantization scale of coding and the estimated mosquito noise level are compared. As the results, we recognize the proposed method gives almost reasonable mosquito block and absolute level. Father, adaptive filter is controlled by the estimated mosquito noise level. It is recognized that the high quality of decoded picture is kept and the mosquito noise is reduced effectively at the picture with degradation.

  • We propose the improved GMSK (gaussian-filtered minimum shift keying) quadrature modulator using the FIR(finite impulse response )filter whose coefficients are obtained form the differnce of phase response, and design its ASIC (applicaton specific integrated circuit) which can be used for GSM (global system for mobile communication) digital cellular system and DCS 1800 (digital cellular system at 1800MHz) personal communication system. Input data become quantized I and Q channel 10 bit signal through cosine and sine ROM mapping after being filtered by the FIR filter whose normalized bandwidth is 0.3 and designed by considering intersymbol interference as well as sampling ratio. These two signals become the GMSK modulated I and Q channel signal through DAC (digital-to-analog converter) and 7th order analog chebyshev LPF(low pass filter) respectively. The difference between the ideal analog signal and its digitized signal is analyzed in terms of sampling noise, quantization noise, truncation noise and coefficient noise. And the effect of the LPF following the DAC is considered. The ASIC design of the GMSK quadrature modulator is also confirmed by an experiment.

  • In this paper, we proposed a postprocessing algorithm for quantization effects reduction in block coded images using the block classification and adaptive filtering. The proposed method consists of classification, adaptive inter-block filtering, and intra-block filtering. First, each block is classified into one of seven classes based on the characteristics of 8${\times}$8 DCT coefficients. Then each block boundary is filtered by adaptive inter-block filters according to the block classification. Finally for blocks which are classified into edge block, intra-block filtering is peformed. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives better results than the conventional methods from both a subjective and an objective viewpoint.

  • Multi-carrier demultiplexer/demodulator (MCDD) in an on-board processing (OBP) satellite used for digital multimedia services has two typical architectures according to the channel demultiplexing procedure: Multistage multi-carrier demultiplexer (M-MCD) or poly-phase fast Fourier transform (PPF). During the channel demultiplexing, phase and quantization errors influence the performance of MCDD; those errors affect the bit error rate (BER) performance of M-MCD and PPF differently. In this paper, we derive the phase error variances that satisfy the condition that M-MCD and PPF have the same signal to noise ratio according to quantization bits, and then, with these results, analyze the BER performances of M-MCD and PPF. The results provided here may be a useful reference for the selection of M-MCD or PPF in designing the MCDD in an OBP satellite communications system.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive digital image watermarking algorithm using successive subband quantization (SSQ) and perceptual model based on wavelet domain. The watermark is embedded into the perceptually significant coefficients (PSCs) of image. The PSCs in the baseband are selected according to the amplitude of the coefficients and the high frequency subbands are selected by SSQ. To embed the watermark, we use perceptual model. The perceptual model is based on the computation of the noise visibility function (NVF) and embed at the texture and edge region stronger embedded watermarks.

  • This paper proposes a new template matching algorithm and its chip design. The CC and SAD algorithms require the massive amount of computation. Hence, several algorithms using quantization schemes have been proposed to reduce the amount of computation and its hardware cost. the proposed algorithm called the EMPPM improves at least 22% of the noise margin compared with the MPPM algorithm. In addition, the proposed architecture can reduce the gate count by more than 60% of that used in the SAD algorithm without usig quantization schemes and 28% of the MPPM algorithm. The VHDL models have been simulated by using the CADANCETEX>$^{TM}$ and logic synthesis has been performed by using the SYNOPSYSTEX>$^{TM}$ with $0.6\mu\textrm{m}$ SOG(sea-of-gate) cell library. The implemented chip consists of 35,829 gates, operates at 100 MHz (worst case 53 MHz) and performs the template maching with the speed of 200 Mpixels/sec.

  • Digital watermarking is a technique which blends intellectual property right with security Blind watermarking 1S one of the difficult watermark technique because original data or inserted watermark is not needed. In this paper, we propose a new blind watermarking method using energy quantization in wavelet domain to insert watermark. The proposed method is robust for various attacks and attack strength because watermark strength is adaptively changed for energy variation of attacks. Simulation results show the proposed method is robust to various attacks such as noise addition, cropping, blurring, sharpening, maintaining imprescriptibility.

  • A Quantizer reconstruction level control method for block artifact reduction in DCT image coding is described. In our scheme, quantizer reconstruction level control is obtained by adding quantization level step size to the optimum quantization level in the direction of reducing the block artifact by minimizing the mean square error(MSE) and error difference(EDF) distribution in boundary without the other additional bits. In simulation results, although the performance in terms of signal to noise ratio is degraded by a little amount, mean square of error difference at block boundary and mean square error having relation block artifact is greatly reduced. Subjective image qualities are improved compared with other block artifact reduction method such as postprocessing by filtering and trasform coding by block overlapping. But the addition calculations of 1-dimensional DCT become to be more necessary to coding process for determining the reconstruction level.

  • This paper presents an adaptive digital image watermarking scheme that uses successive subband quantization (SSQ) and perceptual modeling. Our approach performs a multiwavelet transform to determine the local image properties optimal and the watermark embedding location. The multiwavelet used in this paper is the DGHM multiwavelet with approximation order 2 to reduce artifacts in the reconstructed image. A watermark is embedded into the perceptually significant coefficients (PSC) of the image in each subband. The PSCs in high frequency subbands are selected by setting the thresholds to one half of the largest coefficient in each subband. After the PSCs in each subband are selected, a perceptual model is combined with a stochastic approach based on the noise visibility function to produce the final watermark.
