A NEW BOOK: 'LIGHT-WATER REACTOR MATERIALS'

  • The contents of a new book currently in preparation are described. The dearth of books in the field of nuclear materials has left both students in nuclear materials classes and professionals in the same field without a resource for the broad fundamentals of this important sub-discipline of nuclear engineering. The new book is devoted entirely to materials problems in the core of light-water reactors, from the pressure vessel into the fuel. Key topics deal with the $UO_2$ fuel, Zircaloy cladding, stainless steel, and of course, water. The restriction to LWR materials does not mean a short monograph; the enormous quantity of experimental and theoretical work over the past 50 years on these materials presents a challenge of culling the most important features and explaining them in the simplest quantitative fashion. Moreover, LWRs will probably be the sole instrument of the return of nuclear energy in electric power production for the next decade or so. By that time, a new book will be needed.

AN INTERPOLATION APPROXIMATION VIA SIMULATION ON A QUEUEING NETWORK

  • In this paper we consider open queueing system with a Poisson arrival process which have a finite upper bound on the arrival rate for which the system is stable. Interpolation approximations for quantities of interest, such as moments of the sojourn time distribution, have previously been developed for such systems, utilizing exact light and heavy traffic limits. These limits cannot always be easily computed for complex systems. Thus we consider an interpolation approximation where all of the relevant information is estimated via simulation. We show that all the relevant information can in fact be simultaneously estimated in a single regenerative simulation at any arrival rate. In addition to light and heavy traffic limits, both the quantity of interest and its derivative (with respect to the arrival rate) are estimated at the arrival rate of the simulation. All of the estimates are then combined, using a least squares procedure, to provide an interpolation approximation.

  • In large-area LCD displays, we have developed two new control technologies for high-power LED backlight. The Novel control technology called scanning control and local gray control. In addition, a conceptual display system power management was developed. We have implemented high power-LED module driving system which can achieve power saving and cost down. Finally, we designed LED light-bar module of the side type as a backlight source. It not only achieved light & thin but also reduced the quantity of LEDs.

STAVAX 강의 마이크로 밀링 중 가공 방향 및 절삭유체 분사형태에 따른 표면 거칠기 경향에 관한 연구 (A study on surface roughness depending on cutting direction and cutting fluid type during micro-milling on STAVAX steel)

  • As Light-Emitting Diodes(LEDs) continue to advance in performance, their application in automotive lamps is increasing. Automotive LEDs utilize light guides not only for aesthetics but also to control light quantity and direction. Light guides employ patterns of a few hundred micrometers(㎛) to regulate the light, and the surface roughness(Ra) of these patterns can reach tens of nanometers(nm). Given that these light guides are produced through injection molding, mold processing technology with high surface quality micro-patterns is required. This study serves as a preliminary investigation into the development of high surface quality micro-pattern processing technology. It examines the surface roughness of the workpiece based on the cutting direction of the pattern and the cutting fluid type when cutting micro-patterns on STAVAX steel using cubic Boron Nitride(cBN) tools. The experiments involved machining a step-shaped micro-pattern with a height of 60 ㎛ and a pitch of 400 ㎛ in a 22×22 mm area under identical cutting conditions, with only the cutting direction and cutting fluid type being varied. The machining results of four cases were compared, encompassing two cases of cutting direction(parallel to the pattern, orthogonal to the pattern) and two cases of cutting fluid type (flood, mist). Consequently, the Ra value was found to be the highest(Ra 128.33 nm) when machining with the flood type in parallel to the pattern, while it was the lowest(Ra 95.22 nm) when machining with the mist type orthogonal to the pattern. These findings confirm that there is a difference of up to 25.8 % in the Ra value depending on the cutting direction and cutting fluid type.

  • The effects of light quality and irradiance on the growth of Cochlodinium polykrikoides were investigated in the laboratory. At 25°C and 30 psu the irradiance-growth curve was described as μ = 0.34 (I-9.76)/(I+12.5), (r=0.98). This suggests half-saturation photon flux density (PFD) (Ks) of 32.0 μmol photons m–2 s–1, and a compensation PFD (Ic) of 9.76 μmol photons m–2 s–1. Because the Ic equates to a depth of ca. 15.4 m, these responses suggest that irradiance at the depth around and below the thermocline in Yeosuhae Bay would provide favorable conditions for C. polykrikoides. Photoinhibition did not occur at 300 μmol photons m–2 s–1, which was the maximum irradiance used in this study. Blue (450 nm), yellow (590 nm) and red (650 nm) light had different effects on the growth of C. polykrikoides: it grew well under blue light, but not under yellow light. This implies that C. polykrikoides is more likely to cause an outbreak of red tide in the open sea where blue-green wavelengths predominate, rather than in enclosed water bodies where suspended particles absorb most of the blue wavelengths, and yellow-orange wavelengths predominate.

방위에 따른 정측창 시스템의 채광성능 평가 (Daylighting Performance of Topside Lighting Systems for Different Orientations)

  • Daylighting is core of sustainable design in most buildings. Well-designed daylighting systems can significantly reduce or even eliminate the electric lighting loads during the day time, including air conditioning energy loads. Among window systems. the topside lights systems including monitor lighting, sawtooth lighting, sunscoop and, lightscoop is one of the most popular apparatus to improve the lighting quantity. Also they are important both in terms of energy savings and visual quality. The objective of this study is to analyse daylighting performance of topside lighting system for different orientations. Four types of topside lighting system were tested and comparpd: monitor lighting, sawtooth lighting, lightscoop and sunscoop. Totally 25 measuring points of illuminance on the horizontal plane were monitored from 09:00 to 17:00 on October 6, 2008. Agilent data logger and photometric sensors Li-cor were used. Comparisons with a light factor is discussed. The results found in this study would mean that there were no significant differences in light factor between three cases.

경량화 Mg-Li-Al합금의 내식성에 미치는 Si의 영향 (Effect of Si on the Corrosion Properties of Mg-Li-Al Light Alloy)

  • 현재 구조용 합금으로는 최경량화인 Mg-Li-Al합금의 내식성에 미치는 Si의 영향을 전기화학적 분극시험에 의하여 조사하였다. 전기화학적 분극시험은 ${KH}_{2}{PO}_{5}$·NaOH 완충용액으로 pH7로 고정한 0.03% NaCl 전해액에서 Mg-Li-Al(A4)합금과 Mg-Li-Al에 Si을 0.48 wt% 첨가한 (S5)합금에 대하여 전류밀도에 따른 전위의 변화를 측정하였다. 실험 결과 미량의 Si를 첨가한 Mg-Li-Al-Si 합금의 경우가 Si을 첨가하지 않은 Mg-Li-Al 합금의 경우보다 부식속도가 증가하였으며, 부식생성물의 분포범위도 넓었고 생성량도 많았다. 이러한 실험결과를 고려해 볼 때, Mg-Li-Al 합금에 미량이지만 Sidl 첨가됨으로써 Mg-Li-Al 합금의 내식성이 감소된다고 판단된다. 따라서 강도특성이 향상을 목적으로 첨가하는 Si의 첨가량에 대해서는 적절한 양의 조정이 필요하다.

  • In The Lighting design is important to acknowledge appearance space. Development of artificial light makes a extension to life space in the Modern life. With the rapid development of efficient light sources, have lighting design acquired the tools that allow artificial lighting to be produced with adequate illuminance levels. However, by the task of defining the objectives and methods behind discipline, of deciding on the criteria by which the artificial lighting that is now provide many available data to be anpaied. The main concern is which illuminace levels and types of lighting will ensure optimum visual performance, high productive and safety at design which are affordable. This study is support to standard design process with material reflection rate, installing the lighting fixture, task illuminance level and automatic arithmetic calculation during the lighting design. Lighting Design database can check and support other final lighting level. A quantitative light that is primarily oriented toward providing a recommended illuminance level, the criterion of develop a concept that goes beyond the requirements that would ensure productivity and safety to meet the needs of the architecture and interior space. illuminance level is compose to space task and space code according to KS A 3011. To be able to design the visual effect of an environment the central reference quantity has to provided the Database.

LIDAR와 Split-FX 소프트웨어를 이용한 암반 절리면의 자동추출과 절리의 특성 분석 (Automatic Extraction of Fractures and Their Characteristics in Rock Masses by LIDAR System and the Split-FX Software)

  • 암반 내 구조물을 시공하는 경우 역학적 안정성을 평가하기 위하여 암반의 특성을 조사한다. 이 경우 암반의 특성은 주로 암반 내 절리의 특성에 의하여 좌우된다. 지금까지는 암반 내 절리의 특성을 조사하기 위하여 암반이 노출된 사면이나 노두에 접근하고 육안으로 직접 관찰하였다. 이때 급사면과 같은 곳에서 접근의 문제, 작업의 안전 문제, 많은 시판이 걸리는 문제, 조사시간에 비하여 얻은 정보량의 부족, 정보의 재현 문제, 측정 오차 문제 등의 제한이 있었다. 따라서 이와 같은 문제를 개선하기 위하여 LIDAR (light detection and ranging)로 암반을 스캔하여 얻은 포인트 클라우드(point cloud)글 Split-FX 소프트웨어로 처리한 결과 절기의 방향과 간격 및 절리면의 거칠기 등 절리의 특성을 정확하고 효율적으로 분석할 수 있었다.

  • 본 논문에서는 구상흑연주철을 어니일링하여 퍼라이트기지와 페라이트기지의 양을 조정하므로서 절삭성이 어느 정도 향상되는가를 실험검토하였다. 제일보에서는 퍼라이트기지가 페라이트기지로 변화할 때에 절삭비, 전단각 및 절삭저항에 어떠한 영 향을 주는가를 검토하였고, 본보에서는 기지조직의 변화가 전단응력 및 절삭에너지에 미치는 영향을 검토하였으며 각조직에 대한 절삭방정식과 절삭정수를 결정하였다.
