  • In this paper, the recirculation flow motion and mixing characteristics driven by air bubble stream in a rectangular water tank is studied. The time-resolved PIV technique is adopted for the quantitative visualization and analysis. 488 nm Ar-ion CW laser is used for illumination and orange fluorescent ($\lambda_{ex}=540nm,\;\lambda_{em}=560nm$) particle images are acquired by a PCO 10bit high-speed CCD camera (1280$\times$1024). To obtain clean particle images, 545 nm long pass optical filter and an image intensifier are employed and the flow rates of compressed air is 3 l/min at 0.5 MPa. The recirculation and mixing flow field is further investigated by time-resolved POD analysis technique. It is observed that the large scale recirculation resulting from the interaction between rising bubble stream and side wall is the most dominant flow structure and there are small scale vortex structures moving along with large scale recirculation flow. It is also verified that the sum of 20 modes of velocity field has about 67.4% of total turbulent energy.

  • Historical maps are precious materials, which show spatial distribution of land use, streets and so on at the time when the maps were produced. In analysis of historical maps, the most practical method is to compare them with the present ones, for instance by overlaying them. However, the low precision, in the geometrical sense, of the historical maps makes the task of comparison very difficult. This drawback brings us the idea to incorporate the historical maps into GIS after rubber-sheet transformation, i.e. geometric correction, of them. It makes comparing and overlaying multiple maps from different time periods. Furthermore, it gives map-scales to the historical maps, which are not in general represented on the old maps, and if we allow ourselves to ignore the changes in terrain from past to present, it will make overlaying of present contour lines on the historical maps. As a result, we can bring the points of view of quantitative consideration and three-dimensional visualization into analyses of historical map. We have addressed incorporating historical maps produced in Edo period (1603-1867) in Japan into our GIS for Tokyo. This article shows the outline of our procedures and some applications, e.g., overlaying different maps from Edo period to present, quantitative analyses of land use in Edo, and visualization of landscape of Edo.

  • An x-ray PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was developed fur measuring quantitative information on flows inside opaque conduits and/or opaque-fluid flows. To check the performance of the x-ray PIV technique developed, it was applied to a liquid flow in an opaque Teflon tube. To acquire x-ray images suitable for PIV velocity field measurements, the refraction-based edge enhancement mechanism was employed with seeding detectable tracer particles. The amassed velocity field data obtained were in a reasonable agreement with the theoretical prediction. The x-ray PIV technique was also applied to get velocity fields of blood flow and to measure size and velocity of micro-bubbles simultaneously, and to visualize the water refilling process in bamboo leaves. The x-ray PIV was found to be a powerful transmission-type flow imaging technique fur measuring quantitative information of flows inside opaque objects and various opaque-fluid flows.

  • To diagnose circulatory diseases in the viewpoint of hemodynamics, we need to get quantitative hemodynamic information of blood flows related with the vascular diseases with high spatial resolution of tens micrometer and high temporal resolution in the order of millisecond. For investigating in-vivo hemodynamic phenomena, a new diagnosing technique combining medical radiography and PIV method was newly proposed and developed. This angiographic PIV technique consists of a medical X-ray tube, an X-ray CCD camera, a shutter module for double pulses of X-ray, and a synchronizer. The feasibility of the angiographic PIV technique was tested and quantitative flow velocity field distribution of a flow inside an opaque conduit was acquired by the developed system. It can be used for measuring flow phenomena of nontransparent fluids inside opaque conduits.

  • Experiment is carried out to investigate the mixed convective flow in three-dimensional horizontal rectangular channels filled with high viscous fluid. The particle image velocimetry(PIV) with thermo-sensitive liquid crystal tracers is used for visualizing and analysis. Quantitative data of temperature and velocity are obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and neural network is applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. In this study, the fluid used is silicon oil(Pr=909), the aspect ratio(channel width to heigh) is 4 and Reynolds number is $2{\times}10^{-2}$. From the present study, we can visualize the quantitative temperature and velocity of mixed convective flow in three-dimensional horizontal rectangular channels simultaneously.

  • In this study, define the concept of spatial big data and special feature of spatial big data, examine information visualization methodology for increase the insight into the data. Also presented problems and solutions in the visualization process. Spatial big data is defined as a result of quantitative expansion from spatial information and qualitative expansion from big data. Characteristics of spatial big data id defined as 6V (Volume, Variety, Velocity, Value, Veracity, Visualization), As the utilization and service aspects of spatial big data at issue, visualization of spatial big data has received attention for provide insight into the spatial big data to improve the data value. Methods of information visualization is organized in a variety of ways through Matthias, Ben, information design textbook, etc, but visualization of the spatial big data will go through the process of organizing data in the target because of the vast amounts of raw data, need to extract information from data for want delivered to user. The extracted information is used efficient visual representation of the characteristic, The large amounts of data representing visually can not provide accurate information to user, need to data reduction methods such as filtering, sampling, data binning, clustering.

  • This paper explores the conditions and potential of newly designed and tried methodology of big data analysis that apply to Korean history subject matter. In order to advance them, we need to pay more attention to quantitative analysis methodologies over pre-existing qualitative analysis. To obtain our new challenge, I propose 'digital history' methods along with associated disciplines such as linguistics and computer science, data science and statistics, and visualization techniques. As one example, I apply interdisciplinary convergence approaches to the principle and mechanism of elite reproduction during the Korean medieval age. I propose how to compensate for a lack of historical material by applying a semi-supervised learning method, how to create a database that utilizes text-mining techniques, how to analyze quantitative data with statistical methods, and how to indicate analytical outcomes with intuitive visualization.

  • It is highly needed to measure the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration field in water for a variety of purposes such as biological, industrial, environmental monitoring and medical application. Application of PSP (Pressure Sensitive Paint) which is sensitive to oxygen concentration has been carried out to measure DO concentration field using PtOEP/PS film and intensity based method under the UV-LEDs illumination. A micro round water jet having 100% of DO was obliquely impinged on to a PtOEP/PS film coated plate placed in a 0% of DO water container. DO concentration fields on the impinging plate were quantitatively visualized with a $2.94\;{\mu}m$ of spatial resolution. Through pixel-by-pixel calibration, uncertainty of each pixel by different sensitivity, different dye concentration and non-uniformity of illumination was removed. It is demonstrated that the high DO concentration region was coincided with the impingement area. The DO concentration gradient due to DO diffusion was affected by Reynolds number.

  • Conventional electrospray and air spray methods have the vulnerabilities of limited flow rate (throughput) and droplet size, respectively. Since high throughput with uniform size of droplet is required for various applications, an improved technique should be adopted. Here, we report a combined system of an air pressure and an electric field and evaluate the atomization performance of it. The air flow allowed applying high flow rate range and the electric field reinforced the atomization process to generate fine droplets. A correlation between two forces was investigated by comparing the droplet produced by each method. The atomized droplets were measured and visualized by image processing and a particle image velocimetry (PIV). The quantitative results were achieved from the parametric space and the effect of both forces was analyzed. The motion of charged droplets followed the outer electric field rather than the complex vortex in the shear layer so that the droplets accelerated directly toward the grounded collector.
