  • Purpose: We aimed to describe and compare the cognitive function, anxiety, and quality of life for the demented elderly in day care centers or nursing homes. Methods: We selected 44 subjects from day care centers and 63 subjects from nursing homes by performing convenience sampling. The Korean version of Mini Mental Status Examination was used for measuring cognitive status; Rating Anxiety in Dementia, for assessing anxiety; Korean Version of Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease, for assessing the quality of life. The data were collected from May to June 2008 and analyzed by SPSS/WIN 14.0. Results: 1) The cognitive function of the subjects in the day care center was higher than that of the subjects in the nursing home. Anxiety in the subjects in the nursing home was higher than that in the subjects in the day care center. 2) The cognitive function and quality of life of the subjects in the day care center showed statistically significant correlation, 3) The anxiety and quality of life of the subjects in the nursing home showed statistically significant correlation. Conclusions: Nursing interventions that improve the quality of life of the demented elderly should be considered and applied according to the degree of cognitive function and anxiety.

  • Purpose : This study investigated the correlation between social support and older people's quality of life. Methods : We conducted a questionnaire survey with 350 older participants and analyzed 320 completed surveys. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 for Windows. The general characteristics of the participants and quality of life subdomains were analyzed using descriptive statistics and frequency analyses. Furthermore, the differences between the subdomains of social support and quality of life were analyzed using independent t-tests and a one-way ANOVA. Post-hoc tests were performed using the Scheffé test. A significance level of α=.05 was used to verify statistical significance. Results : Upon examining the sub-domain level of social support and considering general characteristics, it was found that older age correlates with increased dependency among patients with associated diseases (p<.05). Similarly, an investigation into participants' quality of life at the subdomain level, considering general characteristics, revealed higher correspondence to lower quality of life (p<.05). Differences emerged between social support and quality of life among older individuals, with a negative correlation observed between the two (p<.05). Conclusion : This study suggests the importance of actively supporting older people with chronic diseases who experience emotional and psychological instability. It advocates for promoting the use of various services, including visiting medical services, convalescent care, and assistance, to meet their needs effectively.

  • Purpose: This study examined degrees of irrational parenthood cognition, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), spousal support, and quality of life and investigated factors that influence the quality of life of infertile women. Methods: Research design was a cross sectional correlational survey with a total of 113 female patients receiving treatment for infertility. Data were collected from August 1 to November 30, 2015. The collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean score of the quality of life was $59.0{\pm}14.8$. The quality of life was significantly associated with irrational parenthood cognition (r=-.70), post traumatic stress disorder (r=-.65), and spousal support (r=.56). The factors significantly affecting the quality of life in infertile women were irrational parenthood cognition (${\beta}=-.45$), post traumatic stress disorder (${\beta}=-.34$), and spousal support (${\beta}=-.32$). The explained variance by these factors was 70.4%, and the regression model was valid (F=89.81, p<.001). Conclusion: This study may contribute to the development of nursing intervention program to improve the quality of life of infertile women.

Demographic characteristics, hopelessness, quality of life, physical function, and caregiver burden were measured. Results: The mean period after being diagnosed with ALS was 57.73 months. The mean score of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis functional rating scale and quality of life was 21.33 (SD=11.97) and 5.70 (SD=1.23) respectively. The mean score of hopelessness was 11.87 (SD=4.72). The caregivers' mean score of McGill quality of life was 4.29 (SD=1.46), and the mean score of McGill quality of life-single item scale was 4.29 (SD=2.02). Conclusion: Since the cause of ALS has not been identified and cure is yet to be discovered, supportive care should be provided for not only quality of life but hope of patients. The findings may be used to develop knowledge based nursing intervention for patients diagnosed with ALS and their caregivers.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in quality of life between groups that promote oral health and those that treat oral diseases using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods: Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS ver. 21.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). A total of 3,338 subjects were selected as subjects for the study before applying oral health promotion (OHP; 1,132 persons) and oral disease treatment (ODT; 2,206 persons). Complex sample logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of OHP and ODT on health-related quality of life. Results: As a result of confirming the effect of OHP and ODT on the quality of life, which are indicators of the quality of life, HINT-8 had a significant effect even in Model 2, adjusted for demographic characteristics, with a significant difference (p<0.01). Conclusions: The above results confirmed that persons who promote oral health have a significant effect on HINT-8, a quality of life scale developed for Koreans. Therefore, continuous oral care is required to improve quality of life.

  • Background: This study investigated the utilization of both problem and emotion focused coping strategies and their association with aspects of quality of life among Turkish women with ovarian cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: The convenience sample consisted of 228 patients in all disease stages. The data were collected using the brief COPE, QOL-Cancer patient tool, sociodemographic sheet, and medical variables were gathered from patients' medical charts. Results: Findings reveal that quality of life is moderately high for this group of cancer patients, despite some specific negative facets of the illness and treatment experience. Acceptance, emotional support and religion were the most frequently used problem-focused coping strategies and self-distraction, venting and behavioral disengagement were the most frequently used emotion-focused coping strategies reported by patients. Overall quality of life and, particularly, psychological and spiritual well-being scores of younger patients were lower. Patients reported using significantly more problem-focused coping than emotion-focused coping, and more problem-focused and less emotion-focused coping predicted greater quality of life. Problem-focused coping was related to patients' physical and spiritual well-being and emotion-focused coping was related inversely with psychological and social well-being. Conclusions: Coping strategies are influential in patient quality of life and their psychosocial adaptation to ovarian cancer. Psycho-oncology support programs are needed to help patients to frequent use of problem-focused coping and reduce emotion-focused coping strategies to improve overall quality of life.

Methods: A descriptive study was conducted on 125 colorectal cancer patients who underwent stoma reversal in a tertiary hospital in Korea. Data were collected using the Korean versions of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer-Quality of Life Core 30 and Colorectal Cancer Specific Questionnaire 38 (EORTC QLQ-C30 and CR38), and the Hospital Anxiety-Depression Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analyses. Results: Participants experienced sexual problems, difficulties in defecation, and nausea/vomiting. About twenty-two percent of the patients were depressed and the mean score for global quality of life was $64.40{\pm}19.43$. The multiple regression showed that social and cognitive functioning, depression, and the location of the anastomosis were the important factors that made contributions to the quality of life in colorectal patients with stoma reversal.
