  • It is generally accepted that diet modification provides beneficial effects on the management of diabetes. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of diet modification on nutrient intake and quality of life in a large sample of diabetic patients. This study was conducted using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV and V (2007-2010). A total of 2,484 of diabetic patients were included in the analysis. Then, we compared the overall quality of dietary intake between diabetic patients with diet modification and those without dietary modification. The result showed that subjects on diabetic diet (DDG) showed lower levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, and AST before and after the adjustment for covariates (all p < 0.05). The results of nutrient assessment showed that DDG had lower intakes of total energy, fat, and carbohydrate (all p < 0.05), but higher intakes of energy from protein, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, niacin and vitamin C than NDG. (all p < 0.05). In addition, nutritional adequacy ratio of calcium and vitamin B2 were significantly higher in DDG than those in normal diet group (NDG) (p < 0.05). However, we observed no significant differences in quality of life between two groups. In conclusion, diet modification in diabetic patients seemed to be effective to improve blood lipid profile and the adequacy of nutrient intake without sacrificing the quality of life.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in quality of life between groups that promote oral health and those that treat oral diseases using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods: Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS ver. 21.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). A total of 3,338 subjects were selected as subjects for the study before applying oral health promotion (OHP; 1,132 persons) and oral disease treatment (ODT; 2,206 persons). Complex sample logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of OHP and ODT on health-related quality of life. Results: As a result of confirming the effect of OHP and ODT on the quality of life, which are indicators of the quality of life, HINT-8 had a significant effect even in Model 2, adjusted for demographic characteristics, with a significant difference (p<0.01). Conclusions: The above results confirmed that persons who promote oral health have a significant effect on HINT-8, a quality of life scale developed for Koreans. Therefore, continuous oral care is required to improve quality of life.

  • A selected subject and a standardized scoring system were newly enforced at college entrance examination from 1999. A selected subject system means each student can select one subject in addition to common subject in the field of mathematical research II and a standardized scoring system means we standardize the score of each field as mean 50 and standard deviation 10 in order to adjust the degree of difficulty between fields. In the field of mathematical research II, there may exist not only difference of the degree of difficulty but also that of general studying ability between groups of selected subjects. So when we standardize score, we have to consider them. So far a linear equating which is a parametric method and an equi-percentile equating which is a nonparametric method have been published, but both of them supposed that the general studying ability between groups was equal. So in this paper an adjusted linear and percentile equating method which seems to be adequate to our entrance examination is suggested and is investigated by computer simulation.
