Purpose: This study analyzes the trends of nursing researches about organ donation and transplantation, and recommends the direction of future nursing studies in Korea. Methods: Ninety-nine researches based upon organ donation and transplantation in Korea were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Among them 58 papers were master's theses and 9 were doctoral dissertations. Articles about organ beneficiaries were seventy. The 47 articles among them were for kidney transplantation. By the types of research design, there were 73 quantitative studies, 19 qualitative studies, and 9 methodological studies. In correlation studies, the quality of life of subjects were evaluated the association with stress, social support, self-efficacy, and compliance. In experimental studies, the independent variables were self efficacy promotion exercise, steroid medication, educational programs regarding an organ transplantation and a brain death, DanJeon breathing exercise, and telephone counseling. The methods of qualitative studies were based on the grounded theory, phenomenology, interpretive phenomenology, and ethnography. The dominant concepts of qualitative researches were experiences of a decision-making of donors and of recipients for organ transplantation. Conclusion: Descriptive surveys or correlation studies were predominant on the nursing research about organ transplantation. Qualitative studies were conducted to some extent. It is recommended to conduct clinically applicable interventional researches with the experimental design.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of horizontal violence in intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. Methods: This is a methodological triangulation study consists of quantitative and qualitative research methods. A total of 134 ICU nurses from 5 hospitals participated in a survey on nurse to nurse horizontal violence, and the qualitative data were collected through 3 focus group interviews. Results: 94.0% of the participants have experienced horizontal violence within the past 6 months. The question with the highest mean score was "dominating senior nurses mood", and the question with the lowest mean score was "physical assaults". The qualitative data analysis revealed 17 themes on the backgrounds, types, and influence of horizontal violence. Conclusion: The survey result shows that the problem of horizontal violence in ICU nurses is serious, and the focus group interview extracts additional types of horizontal violence such as "scolding in a wrong way", "pressing to resign", "leaving out in the cold", and "burning". Further research needs to be done to build a multidimensional model of horizontal violence in the nursing workplace.
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the methodological strategies for the architectural design field of study mainly focused on qualitative and quantitative research designs. Firstly, this paper addresses the characteristics of the six approaches including their methodological aspects in general. Each strategy is assessed by the different approaches to give full insights in it. Secondly, it distinguishes the differences among six research approaches especially derived from qualitative and quantitative research designs. The differences are discussed in terms of the strengths and weaknesses of each strategy. Finally, this paper attempts to discuss about possible applications for introducing approaches to the research topic with which the exemplified research topic, a design evaluation system, deals. To investigate the applicability of the design methods employed, the following topic has been stated; how to develop a design evaluation system and what to be considered for unfolding the thrown topic in terms of strategic approaches in the field of architectural design researches reviewed through the study.
Purpose: This study used a mixed methods research design in an attempt to verify the effects of robot-assisted rehabilitation on the gait ability of stroke patients with hemiplegia, and thereby further understand the benefits and challenges of stroke patients' experiences relying on robot-assisted rehabilitation. Methods: An exploratory sequential mixed methods study design was used in order to combine both quantitative and qualitative data. For the quantitative data collection, a total of 30 stroke patients with hemiplegia were recruited from one rehabilitation hospital. Qualitative data were collected through individual interviews using semi-structured questionnaires for a group of 15 patients who were currently undergoing robot-assisted rehabilitation. The data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Results: As a result of the quantitative analysis, there were significant differences between the two groups in terms of daily living activity patterns, total number of steps, and average walking speed. As a result of the qualitative analysis, the four main themes derived consisted of, 'curiosity about the usage of robot-assisted rehabilitation,' 'pleasure experienced while using the robots,' 'insufficient information about robots,' and 'a lack of education about robot-assisted rehabilitation.' Conclusions: Robot-assisted rehabilitation had a significant effect on the walking ability of stroke patients with hemiplegia. Additionally, stroke patients with hemiplegia experienced difficulty during the course of their robot-assisted rehabilitation, due to a lack of sufficient information on correct usage techniques. These quantitative and qualitative findings could provide the basic foundation for the development of an educational program on robot-assisted rehabilitation.
Purpose: This research was aimed to analyze the reports of qualitative researches published in Korean Journal of Women Health Nursing (KJWHN). Methods: Twenty qualitative researches using in-depth interviews or focus groups published in KJWHN during from 2002 to 2011 were selected for analysis. Selected reports were analyzed by consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ), which were a reporting guideline for qualitative researches, and consisted of thirty two items and three domains, i.e., (1) research team and reflexivity, (2) study design, and (3) data analysis and reporting. Results: Personal characteristics related to credentials, gender and interviewer's bias or assumption were less reported than other items in the 1st domain. In the 2nd domain, descriptions such as a presence of non-participants, pilot test for interview guide development, and transcript return to participants were less reported than other items. In the 3rd domain, items related to number of data coder, participants checking of the finding, and clarity of minor themes were less reported than other items. Conclusion: It could be concluded that COREQ is a useful guideline for reporting of qualitative studies. From these results, we suggest that full items of COREQ should be considered and described when researchers report qualitative research.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to analyze Korean qualitative research studies on cerebral palsy and provide a basis for future direction of research. Methods : Twenty-six articles were selected by searching 4 Korean databases (NDSL, DBpia, KISS, and RISS) and reviewing the list of additional references. All the articles were analyzed and assessed using the Consolidated criteria for Reporting Qualitative research (COREQ). Results : Seventeen qualitative studies and 9 mixed quantitative and qualitative studies were selected, and methodologies such as case study (42.3 %), constant comparative method (23.1 %) and phenomenology (23.1 %) were used. The studies investigated the effects of interventions (38.5 %), support programs (30.8 %), and life experiences (26.9 %). Among the participants, 50.0 % were persons with disabilities only, 19.2 % were parents only, and 30.8 % were combination of persons with disabilities, parents, teachers, and therapists. The number of participants in most studies was 2-9 (57.7 %). The COREQ evaluation of the selected articles revealed many shortcomings in the studies. Interview guidelines were used only in 26.9 % of the studies. In particular, many articles did not describe in detail the characteristics of researchers and the relationship between researchers and the participants. Conclusion : In future, various research methodologies and research checklists must be used to stimulate high-quality qualitative research with on cerebral palsy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to integrate the results of qualitative studies to understand critical care survivors' experience of the post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Methods: This was a meta-synthesis of primary studies that used qualitative methods. We reviewed 26 qualitative studies on PICS selected from 8 international and Korean databases and from a manual search. Thomas and Harden's 3 stages (free coding, development of descriptive themes, generation of analytical themes) for thematic synthesis were utilized to analyze the collected qualitative data. Results: Four descriptive themes emerged from the thematic synthesis: weak physical conditions, psycho-emotional changes, the painful-memory of intensive care units, and social vulnerability. The analytical theme for the current study was "unfamiliarity with the vulnerable self." Critical care survivors had to confront entirely different "selves" after discharge from intensive care units. They had become physically weak, psychologically unstable, and the critical memories continued to create distress. These changes increased their social vulnerability by making them dependent on others, causing family conflicts, and changing interpersonal relationships. Conclusions: Finding from this qualitative synthesis and other related literature highlight the severity of PICS and the importance of rehabilitative intervention for critical care survivors.
Objectives: To analyze the reports of qualitative research about depressed mood and suicidal ideation of Korean Seniors. Methods: Eleven published qualitative research studies were selected for analysis. We extracted common topics and factors of each stage, Selected factors were paralleled and synthesized to make a flow chart of the phenomena. Results: Depressed mood arousals of Korean seniors are categorized by causation factors, which include economic, psychosomatic, and social factors, and positive-negative coping strategies, which include cognitive-behavioral factors. Suicidal experiences are categorized as ideation, suicidal attempt, and after-suicide stage. In the latter, participants reported three types of lifestyles by their enthusiasm for 'being alive'. Conclusions: Through the qualitative synthesis of research, we could analyze and categorize major factors and coping strategies of participants who exhibited a depressed mood or suicidal ideation.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe work experiences of triage nurses working at emergency departments in Korea. Methods: A qualitative descriptive research method was used. Twenty-one nurses of emergency department participated in the first interview and 16 of them participated in the second interview. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and field notes.
