  • This paper presents the numerical prediction of airflow-induced sound in DVD drives. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is first conducted to evaluate flow field characteristics due to the high-speed disk rotation, and to support the acoustic analysis. The acoustic analogy based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation is adopted to predict aeroacoustic noise patterns. The integral solution for quadrupole volume source is included to identify the turbulence noise generated inside the DVD tray. Near-field noise is strongly affected by the flow field characteristic, which is caused by the complex shape of the tray. For a mid-field, the quadrupole noise play as a counterpart of thickness noise or loading noise, resulting in a different pattern compared with those in the near field.

  • The purpose of this work is to predict the low frequency aero-acoustic noise generated from the horizontal axis wind turbine, NREL Phase VI for the whole operating conditions of various wind speeds using large eddy simulation and Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Because there is no experimental data about wind turbine noise, we first of all compared aerodynamic performance such as shaft torque and power with experimentally measured value. Performance results show a good agreement with experimental data within about 0.8%. As the wind speed increases, the overall sound pressure level and the sound pressure level by the quadrupole and dipole source show a increasing tendency. Also, sound pressure level is proportional to $r^{-2}$ in the near field and $r^{-1}$ in the far field according to the increase of distance from the center of hub of wind turbine. According to 2 times increase of distance, sound pressure level is reduced by about 6dB.

  • Using a discrete wavenumber method, we examine the effects on Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) logs when a mismatch exists between the amplitudes or generating times of the signals from individual monopoles in a LWD multipole source. An amplitude-mismatched LWD dipole/quadrupole source produces non-dipole/non-quadrupole modes as well as flexural and screw modes. The strongest of non-dipole/non-quadrupole modes is the Stoneley mode, whose amplitude increases with increasing mismatch. However, we can recover the flexural mode signals by A-C processing, and the screw mode by A-B+C-D processing, respectively. The Stoneley mode, which has the same amplitude at the same radial distance from the borehole axis, is cancelled out by A-C and A-B+C-D processing as long as the tool is placed at the centre of the borehole. The responses from a time-mismatched LWD multipole source look like the summation of responses by two or four monopole sources off the borehole axis. However, we can avoid the misinterpretation of the formation velocities by referring to the computed dispersion curves, which are independent of the arrival times of the modes, on the frequency semblance plot.

  • Acoustic source localization using MUSIC etc. utilizes the propagation model in the medium. A plane wave model is a well-known source model for the identification of distant sources in the SONAR and a monopole source model becomes the one for the identification of rather near range sources. This paper introduces a dipole source model and a tripole source model consisting of one monopole and one dipole source. The simplifying procedures provide the simplified factors rather than the superposition of the relating monopole sources. The simulations show that the tripole model is useful in the general case including pure monopole, pure dipole, or pure quadrupole source identification.

  • In this study, we made a new discharge source improving previous SPI source to ionize softly organic compounds. The new SPI source consists of two electrodes as a hollow mesh cathode of half cylindrical shape and a hollow anode. We optimized the geometrical parameter of the SPI source by investigating the I-V curves at the various distance between the cathode and the anode. As the results, we found stable conditions of the soft plasma on broad range of the current and the voltage. The new SPI source attached to quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS), and we obtained the mass spectra of dichloromethane (DCM). The fragment patterns of DCM appeared similarly with the pattern of electron ionization (EI).

  • A residual gas analyzer (RGA) system has been developed in this laboratory. Characteristics of the RGA system parts such as ion source, quadrupole mass filter and sensitivity are introduced. Some efforts have been made to improve performance of the two types of ion sources, open ion source (OIS) and closed ion source (CIS). A metal mesh was placed onto the electron beam entrance of the CIS anode tube to block the filament field penetration. Sensitivity of the CIS ion sources with and without the mesh was compared by mass spectra of SF6 gas (97% He base) introduced into the CIS anode through a needle valve. About ten-times improvement in the RGA sensitivity was observed for the CIS with the mesh in the electron entrance. Computer simulation showed an axi-symmetric anode potential distribution and improved focusing of the electron beam inside the anode tube with the mesh.

  • Synthetic seismograms recorded with a logging-while-drilling (LWD) tool in the presence of slow formation are computed by the discrete wavenumber method. Monopole, dipole, and quadrupole logging tools are simulated with a source center frequency of 4 kHz. The modes in the responses are identified and characterized with time and frequency semblance plots. Numerical results show that, to obtain the formation shear velocity, we need to correct the peak velocities of the multipole modes in the semblance plots by using analytical dispersion curves.

  • A computational procedure to estimate the noise radiated from a discharge valve system in a linear compressor was discussed and established. This procedure was composed of three steps. As the first step, the dynamic behavior of the valve system was estimated taking into consideration of fluid-valve-piston interactions. As the second step, the flow characteristics of refrigerant in the discharge valve system were estimated through computational fluid dynamics applying the behaviors of the valves as moving boundary conditions. The variations of pressures and velocities of fluid were converted to quadrupole noise sources. As the final step, the boundary element method based on Helmholtz equation was applied to predict the radiated acoustic pressure. The computational results by the presented procedure were experimentally validated.
