The thermodynamic properties of steam table are obtained by measurement or approximate calculation under appropriate assumptions. Therefore they are supposed to have basic measurement errors. And thermodynamic properties should be modeled through function approximation for using in numerical analysis. In order to make noised thermodynamic properties corresponding to measurement errors, random numbers are generated, adjusted to appropriate magnitudes and added to original thermodynamic properties. Both neural networks and quadratic spline interpolation method are introduced for function approximation of these modified thermodynamic properties in the saturated water based on pressure and temperature. In analysis spline interpolation method gives much less relative errors than neural networks at both ends of data. Excluding the both ends of data, the relative errors of neural networks is generally within ${\pm}0.2%$ and those of spline interpolation method within ${\pm}0.5$~1.5%. This means that the neural networks give smaller relative errors compared with quadratic spline interpolation method within range of use. From this fact it was confirmed that the neural networks trace the original values better than the quadratic interpolation method and neural networks are more appropriate method in modelling the saturated steam table.

In numerical analysis for phase change material, numerical values of thermodynamic properties such as temperature, pressure, specific volume, enthalpy and entropy are required. But the steam table or diagram itself cannot be used without modelling. In this study applicability of neural networks in modelling superheated vapor region of water was examined by comparing with the quadratic spline. neural network consists of an input layer with 2 nodes, two hidden layers and an output layer with 3 nodes. Quadratic spline interpoation method was also applied for comparison. Neural network model revealed smaller percentage error to quadratic spline interpolation. From these results, it is confirmed that the neural networks could be powerful method in modelling the superheated range of the steam table.

For the line search of a multi-variable optimization, an efficient algorithm is presented. The algorithm sequentially employs several polynomial approximations such as 2-point quadratic interpolation, 3-point cubic interpolation/extrapolation and 4-point cubic interpolation/extrapolation. The order of polynomial function is automatically increased for improving the accuracy of approximation. The method of approximation (interpolation or extrapolation) is automatically switched by checking the slope information of the sample points. Also, for selecting the initial step length along the descent vector, a new approach is presented. The performance of the proposed method is examined by solving typical test problems such as mathematical problems, mechanical design problems and dynamic response problems.
We have evaluated the performances of the following six interpolation schemes used for win-dow deformation in particle image velocimetry (PIV): the linear, quadratic, B-spline, cubic, sinc, Lagrange interpolations. Artificially generated images comprised of particles of diameter in a range pixel were investigated. Three particle diameters were selected for detailed evaluation: pixel with a constant particle concentration $0.02particle/pixel^2$. Two flow patterns were considered: uniform and shear flows. The mean and random errors, and the computation times of the interpolation schemes were determined and compared.

In this paper, we propose a new efficient hybrid-mixed C(sup)0 curved beam element with the optimal interpolation functions determined from numerical tests, which gives very accurate locking-free two-node curved beam element. In the element level, the stress parameters are eliminated from the stationary condition and the nodeless degrees of freedom are also removed by static condensation so that a standard six-by-six stiffness matrix is finally obtained. The numeri cal benchmark problems show that the element with cubic displacement functions and quadratic stress functions is the most efficient.
We have evaluated the performances of the following six interpolation schemes used for window deformation in particle image velocimetry (PIV): the linear, quadratic, B-spline, cubic, sinc, Lagrange interpolations. Artificially generated images comprised of particles of diameter in a range $1.1{\leq}d_p\leq10.0$ pixel were investigated. Three particle diameters were selected for detailed evaluation: $d_p$=2.2, 3.3, 4.4 pixel with a constant particle concentration 0.02 $particle/pixel^2$. Two flow patterns were considered: uniform and shear flows. The mean and random errors, and the computation times of the interpolation schemes were determined and compared.

Image interpolation has been widely used and studied in the various fields of image processing. There are many approaches of varying complexity and robustness. In this paper, a new distance weight is proposed for the conventional linear interpolation. In comparison with the conventional linear weight, the new distance weight uses a quadratic or cubic polynomial equation to reflect that the interpolated value should be influenced more by the value of closer pixels in an input image. In this paper, the new adaptive linear (NAL) interpolation, which considers patterns near the interpolated value, is also proposed. This algorithm requires a pattern weight, which is used to determine the ratio of reflection on local patterns, to obtain an interpolated image that exhibits better quality at various magnification factors (MF). In the computer simulation, not only did the NAL interpolation exhibit much lower computational complexity than conventional bicubic interpolation, it also improved peak signal-to-noise ratios (PSNR).
The criticality problem in this study is studied with the recently investigated the Anlı-Güngör scattering function. The scattering function depends on the Legendre polynomials as the Mika scattering function, but it includes only one scattering parameter, t, and its orders. Both Mika and Anlı-Güngör scattering are the same for only linear anisotropic scattering. The difference appears for the quadratic scattering and further. The analytical calculations are performed with the HN method, and the numerical results are calculated with Wolfram Mathematica. Interpolation technique in Mathematica is also used to approximate the isotropic scattering results when t parameter goes to zero. Thus, the calculated results could be compared with the literature data for isotropic scattering.
Numerical analysis of two-fluid flows for both water and air is carried out. Free-Surface flows with an arbitrary deformation have been simulated around two dimensional submerged hydrofoil. The computation is performed using a finite volume method with unstructured meshes and an interface capturing scheme to determine the shape of the free surface. The method uses control volumes with an arbitrary number of faces and allows cell-wise local mesh refinement. the integration in space is of second order based on midpoint rule integration and linear interpolation. The method is fully implicit and uses quadratic interpolation in time through three time levels The linear equation systems are solved by conjugate gradient type solvers and the non-linearity of equations is accounted for through picard iterations. The solution method is of pressure-correction type and solves sequentially the linearized momentum equations the continuity equation the conservation equation of one species and the equations or two turbulence quantities.

To obtain the shape of the free surface more accurately, computations are carried out by a finite volume method using unstructured meshes and an interface capturing method. Free-surface flow, which is very important in the fields of ship and marine engineering, is numerically simulated for flows of both water and air. Control volumes are used with an arbitrary number of faces and allows a local mesh refinement. The integration is of second order, with a midpoint rule integration and linear interpolation. The method is fully implicit and uses quadratic interpolation. The solution method of pressure-correction type solves sequentially equations of momentum, continuity, conservation, and two-equations turbulence model. Comparison are quantitatively made between the computation and experiment in order to confirm the solution method.
