A survey to assess the diversity of wound-associated Ophiostomatales and Microascales, the so-called ophiostomatoid fungi, on Korean native trees, was undertaken in 2017. Wounds were artificially created, and a fungus resembling a species of Sporendocladia was consistently isolated from the exposed cambium and inner bark of artificially induced wounds on Quercus variabilis. Morphological examination and DNA sequence comparisons based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 5.8S regions of the rDNA confirmed the identity of the fungus as Sporendocladia bactrospora. This is the first report on S. bactrospora occurring on Q. variabilis in Korea.
The floristic composition and structure of the Oriental Arbor-viate forest, natural monument no. 1, were investigated in the Daegu city, southeastern Korea. Vegetation stratification have four layers including tree (>5m), subtree (2m-5m), shrub (1m-2m) and herbs (<1m), which occupied 63.8%, 10.7%, 12.1% and 49.4%, respectively. The vegetation of the study area were divided into Artemisia keiskeana - Quercus variabilis and Pyrrosia linearifolia-Thuja orientalis (OAV) communities. Frequency distribution for diameter classes of the Oriental Arbor-vitae population showed a reverse-J shape. The result suggests that the OAV forest of this site might maintains continuously the present state. The annual radial growth of OAV, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis, the dominant species of the present site showed 0.29, 1.01 and 1.28 mm/year, respectively. Competition of OAV with theh other species including P. densiflora and Q. variabilis could influence negatively on the growthand survival of OAV forest in this site.
In this study, species resistant to forest fire were extracted from high trees through an investigation of combustion mechanism. Here, the average flameless ignition temperatures of living leaves, branches and barks of oak were respectively, $365^{\circ}C$, $440^{\circ}C$ and $435^{\circ}C$, and the average flameless ignition temperatures of living leaves, branches, barks and cones of pine tree were respectively, $320^{\circ}C$, $405^{\circ}C$, $435^{\circ}C$ and $363^{\circ}C$. It shows that generally, pine tree has a lower flameless ignition temperature than oak and thus, has a relatively high risk of flameless ignition. When comparing risk of fire depending on ignition characteristics, Quercus serrata had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus acutissima and Quercus serrata had a low risk of crown fire, as well. When analysing risk of fire depending on a duration of flame, also, Quercus dentata had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus variabilis Blume had a low risk of crown fire too. Lastly, when comparing risk of fire, according to heat release rates, Quercus acutissima had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus acutissima and Quercus dentata had a low risk of crown fire, as well. In conclusion, it was observed that as fire-resistant species, Quercus serrata and Quercus dentata have a low risk of ignition, Quercus variabilis Blume has a short duration of flame after discharging ignition when a forest fire occurs, and Quercus acutissima, Pinus Rigida and Antipathes japonica Brook have low heat release rates.
This study was aimed to reduce the period of bed log through the protection of harmful fungi and to investigate the effects of physiologically activating substance on the yield increase of Lentinus edodes. Extracts of Allium fistulosm, Hordeum vulagare var. hexastichon, Lentinus edodes. Daucus carota var. sativa, and Citrus junos were used as a physiologically activating substances. The degree of mycelial growth tested by color change after Benzene - azo - ${\alpha}$ - naphthylamine. One percent extract of Album fistulosm was most highly effective as a physiologically activating substance on mycelial biomass growth of Lentinus edodes. Best effects of application of physiologically activating substance was observed in Quercus variabilis bed logs. These results suggested that supplement with physiologically activating substance to the bed log would be beneficial for the production of Lentinus edodes.
As finger joint method has a high rate of yield and high strength and ease in working, it has been widely used as an end joint method for solid wood and wood based-material. Therefore, we end-joined the material of Pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis and populus euramericana with polyvinyl acetate adhesive and resorcinol phenol resin adhesive. The effect of difference (0, 0.15, 0.3, 0.45mm) between the dimensions of tip width and root width of the finger (DTRW) on bending strength properties was as follows: 1. In the case of polyvinyl acetate adhesive, DTRW had no effect on bending modulus of elasticity(MOE) and modulus of rupture(MOR) of the three kinds of species, because their bonding layers were destroyed by slippage, not their woody parts. 2. In the case of resorcinol phenol resin adhesive, the material of Quercus variabilis showed an optimal result at 0.15 or 0.3 of DTRW, while the poplar did at 0 of DTRW 3. The differences in efficiency ratio of bending MOR of populus euramericana, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis species according to the kind of adhesive were 13-29%, 23-30% and 45-53%, respectively.
The potential natural vegetation of Naejangsan national park area, southwestern Korea, was inferred from the actual vegetation. With the phytosociological classification, ordinatins and field surveys, the actual vegetation map of the area was made in scale 1:25, 000, including ten communities of Pinus densiflora, quercus mongolica, Quercus variabilis, Carpinus laxiflora, Daphnipyllum macropodum, Carpinus tschonoskii, Quercus aliena-Carpinus tschonoskii, Cornus controversa-Lindera erythrocarpa, Torreya mucifera-Zelkova serrate and Acer mono-Zelkova serrata community. The analyses of species richness, age structure and various informations on vegetation changes suggest the three pathways of late stage succession from P. densiflora forest to climatic climax. The first of them is through Q. variabilis forest to Q. monogolica forest in the upper parts of the mountain, the second through Q. variabilis and Q. serrata forest to C. laxiflora forest in the middle parts and the third through Q. aliena forest to C. tschonoskii forest in lower parts. Considering the actual vegetation and informations on the vegetation changes including human activities, the potential natural vegetation of the mountain mainly composed of Q. monogolica, C. laxiflora, C. tschonoskii, P. densiflora and Z. serrata forest as climatic climax and/or edaphic climax was inferred. The present situration of nature conservation in the area was estimated by the examination on the actual vegetation and potential natural vegetation map.
Understanding and quantifying of carbon storage in ecosystem is very important factor for predicting change of global carbon cycle under the global climate change. We estimated total ecosystem carbon in Gyeryongsan National Park with naturally well preserved ecosystem in Korea. Vegetation of Gyeryongsan National Park was classified with mainly four communities with Quercus mongolica (1,743.5 ha, 38.0%), Quercus variabilis (1,174.0 ha, 25.6%), Quercus serrata (971.9 ha, 21.2%), Pinus densiflora (695.2 ha, 15.2%). Biomass and soil carbons were calculated from biomass allometric equations based on the DBH and carbon contents of soil and litter collected in quadrat in each community. The tree biomass carbon was in Quercus variabilis ($130.1tCha^{-1}$), Pinus densiflora ($111.1tCha^{-1}$), Quercus mongolica ($76.2tCha^{-1}$), Quercus serrata ($39.0tCha^{-1}$). Soil carbon storage was in Quercus mongolica ($159.7tCha^{-1}$), Quercus serrata ($121.0tCha^{-1}$), Pinus densiflora ($110.5tCha^{-1}$), Quercus variabilis ($90.8tCha^{-1}$). Ecosystem carbon storage was Pinus densiflora ($239.9tCha^{-1}$), Quercus mongolica ($235.9tCha^{-1}$), Quercus variabilis ($226.0tCha^{-1}$), Quercus serrata ($165.9tCha^{-1}$), total amount was $867.7tCha^{-1}$. The area of each vegetation carbon storage was Quercus mongolica ($411,200tCha^{-1}$), Quercus variabilis ($265,300tCha^{-1}$), Pinus densiflora ($166,800tCha^{-1}$), Quercus serrata ($161,200tCha^{-1}$) and the total ecosystem carbon amount estimated $1,045,400tCha^{-1}$ at Gyeryongsan National Park. Theses results indicate that different in naturally well preserved ecosystem.
This study was done to classify the Quercus forests, along with their interpretations of environmental conditions, located in the lower montane zones of Mt. Bakdal, Gyemyeong, Boryeon, Worak, Cheondeung, Joryeong, Gugmang, Buyong, Duta, Malloe, Midong, Gamak, Sirubong, Sipjabong and Yongsanbong in Chungbuk Province, According to the methodology of the Z.-M. schools of phytosociology, the Quercus forests were classified into three communities and two subcommunities A. Quercus variabilis community, A-1. Quercus acutissima subcommunity, A-2. Typical subcommunity; B. Quercus mongolica community; C. Quercus dentata community. These vegetation units were arranged by human interferences and a gradient of environmental complex such as altitudes, and also were corresponded relatively well with the result of cluster analysis(UPGMA), based on the dominance of component species.
The purpose of this study was to identify the phytosociological vegetation structure through a sampling survey of Mt. Jirisan National Park. And it was conducted to provide the latest data for establishing a conservation and management plan for forest ecosystems. As a result of TWINSPAN classification, it was classified into 4 communities. Group I is the Fraxinus mandshurica - Acer pseudosieboldianum Community, group II is the Quercus serrata - Quercus variabilis Community, group III is the Quercus mongolica Community, group IV is the Pinus densiflora Community. Group I is dominated by Fraxinus mandshurica in the canopy layer, and Cornus controversa and Quercus mongolica compete and maintain dominance. Group II is dominated by Quercus variabilis and Quercus serrata in canopy layer, and Styrax obassia and Styrax japonicus compete in sub-tree layer. In group III, Quercus mongolica has a high dominance of 67% in canopy layer and 27% in the sub-tree layer, and Acer pseudosieboldianum competes with the Quercus mongolica in the sub-tree layer. In group IV, Pinus densiflora showed a high dominance of 74% in canopy layer. The sub-tree layer is dominated by Quercus mongolica, and is accompanied by competition between Carpinus tschonoskii and Fraxinus sieboldiana.
Mortality patterns ad changes of vegetation in newly formed gaps were investigated to examine the succession process of Pinus densiflora forest located at Mt. Worak. The main findings from this study were as follows: ⑴ The forest was dominated by P. densiflora and Quercus variabilis in the oversotry, while Q. mongolica, Q. serrata and Fraxinus sieboldiana in the mid-story. ⑵ In all study areas, the standing dead type was the most common factor influencing gap-forming mortality. ⑶ DBH analysis showed that Pinus densiflora community was replaced by Quercus variabilis community first, and then by quercus mongolica and quercus serrata community. ⑷ Seedlings of P. densiflora were discovered only at dry sites of the gap.
