  • Leaves of various, 3 to 5-year-old Quercus hybrids were intermediate in size between their parental species. The petiole length was the smallest in the hybrids of Q. dentata ${\times}$ Q. crispula $F_1$ and was intermediate in the hybrids of Q. aliena ${\times}$ Q. serrata $F_1$ and Q. dentata ${\times}$ Q. aliena $F_1$ between their parents. The number of serration in hybrids was close to their mother tree's in most of crossing combinations. The serration depth and the ratio between longitudinal and transverse length of leaves were intermediate between the values of their parental species.

  • One of the sapstain fungal species isolated from the stained sapwood of a Japanese black pine in Korea was characterized. The fungal species is tolerant to cycloheximide and has Petosum-like synnema and Sporothrix type synanamorph which are found in the anamorphs of the Ophiostoma piceae complex group. But the species could not form perithecia on MEA. Based on cultural and morphological properties and analysis of the $\beta$-tubulin gene sequence, the fungal species was identified as Ophiostoma quercus. Here, we report mycological characteristics of the anamorphic stage of Ophiostoma quercus isolated in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest the vegetation structure and management plan of forests at Anmyundo. Sixteen plot were established in the forests and surveyed. The plant communities were classified into three community type, which were Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community, Pinus densiflora community, Quercus variabilis community. It was hypothesized that Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community will be changed to Quercus Spp. community. The vegetation management for successional controls on long-term basis was suggested. Dominant trees were mid-size trees(21~30year-old and DBH 18~28cm), and large trees(over DBH 30cm) appeared only at the Recreation Forest and Kuksabong. Anmyundo forests should be managed with a priority given to Pinus densifolra. Forest trees should be planted in consideration of environmental conditions and Pinus densifolra densities.

  • Vegetation structure of Seokseong fortress in Buyeo-Gun was investigated to suggest a desirable management proposal. Communities by phytosociological method were classified into Pinus rigida-Pinus densiflora community and Quercus variabilis community. The importance value of Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis, Pinus thunbergii, and Quercus acutissima were 127.06, 70.29, 69.63, 12.39 and 8.57. According to breast diameter analysis results, it is expected that the importance value of Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora, and Quercus variabilis will be continuously increased. It should be prepared that vegetation management plan over the castle wall should be considered before the repair or restoration of castle wall. Vegetation management around castle wall should be carried out according to the mid or long-term plan and it would be needed to consider the gradual changes from planted Pinus rigida to the historical vegetation of Pinus densiflora.

  • Quercus mongolica (QM) is a species of Quercus native to Eastern Mongolia, Siberia, China, Japan, and Korea. QM has been used as Korean traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation of the skin. Present work, the validation and content determination of the phenolic compounds which were isolated from the leaves of QM, including pedunculagin (1) and kaempferol-3-O-(6"-galloyl)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (2) were conducted through High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). As a result, the contents of these compounds were 4.14% and 0.76% in QM extract, respectively.

  • Field classes are necessary to grow the ability of and an attitude toward exploring nature and to shape the basic concept of natural science. I tried to develop a site for field classes and the old road Naori's hill is an ideal place with convenient traffic and established youth camps. As a result the vegetation was divided into five associations and communities. The vegetation units obtained in the present study were as follow: Quercus acutissima community, Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus acutissima community, Quercus acutissima-Pinus densiflora community, and Quercus mongolica community. In all survey areas 100 family 336 genus 587 species of palants was found. Furthermore, it provides lots of plants throughout the seasons. Not only the flora but also flowering phenology, variety of floral color and growth habits can be used as teaching items. Incorporation of diverse knowledge of plants at the old road Naori's hill into biology teaching will give students academic stimuli and teachers an opportunity of retraining. With a combination of use of visual instruments, the purpose of conceptual and exploring biology is more easily achieved.

  • A comparative study on the structure of wood and charcoals was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Four species as Quercus variabilis $B_LUME$, Quercus mongozica $F_ISCH$ , Fraxinus rhynchcphylla $H_ANCE$ and Prunus sargentii $R_EHDER$ were used for this experiment. Cell dimensions of charcoals showed more higher shrinkage than those of wood. Shape of vessels was slightly changed due to become smaller in tangential diameter. Therefore, it was considered that the decrease of charcoal yield was caused by decrease of cell dimensions as well as loss of wood components.

  • To investigate the vegetation structure of mountain ridge from Namdeogyusan to Sosajae in Baekdudaegan which is the greatest chain as well as the major ecological axix of the Korean Peninsula, sixteen sites(size 500$m^2$) were set up and surveyed. By using TWINSPAN technique, the plants community was divided and summarized into five groups, those are four Quercus mongolica dominated communities and Quercus mongolica-Pinus densiflora community. Four Quercus mongolica dominated communities have differentiated from subtree dominant species. Vegetation structure of each community have explained using important percentage by layer. In descriptive analysis, average number of species is 27.8$\pm$7.5 and average number of individuals is 687.6$\pm$326.8 at unit area(500$m^2$).

  • To investigate the actual vegetation in Sokri mountain area, which consists of Sokri Mt. National Park, forest communities were classified by phytosocialogical analysis according to species composition and physiognomy. Actual vegetation map was drawn on the basis of classified forest communities. The forest communities in Mt. Sokri were classified as follows : 1. Pinus densiflora community 1) P. densiflora-Rhododedron mucronulatum subcommunity 2) P. densiflora-Rhododendron schippenbachii subcomminity 3) P. densiflora-Lespedeza maximowiczii subcommunity 4) P. densiflora-Sasa borealis subcommunity 2. P. densiflora-Quercus serrata community 3. P. densiflora-Q. variabilis community 4. Quercus serrata community 5. Q. serrata-Q. variabilis community 6. Carpinus laxiflora community 7. Quercus mongolica community 1) Typical subcommunity 2) Q. mongolica-Lespedeza maximowiczii subcommunity 3) Q. mongolica-Rhododendron schlippenbachii subcommunity 8. • To investigate the vegetation structure of mountain ridge from Nogodan to Goribong, 22 plots(500$m^2$) set up with random sampling method were surveyed Three groups Quercus mongolica-Fraxinus rhynchophylla community. Quercus mongolica- Pinus densinora community. Quercus mongolica community were classified by cluster analysis. Quercus mongolica was found as it major woody plant species in the ridge area from Nogodan to Goribong. And partly in lower elevation was occupied by deciduous broadleaved tree species and Pinus densiflora. In this area, Korean endemic species, Abies koreana was distributed small amounts. Species diversity(H') of investigated group were ranged 0.9274~1.2845 and it was similar to those of the ridgee area of the national parks in Baekdudaegan.
