Purpose: Rectal prolapse is still a relatively understudied medical condition, especially in women, whereas physical symptoms, depressive symptoms, and quality of life (QOL) in women with pelvic organ prolapse have been steadily studied. This study aimed to examine the interaction and main effects of physical and depressive symptoms on physical and mental QOL of women seeking care for rectal prolapse in Korea. Methods: Ninety-two women with rectal prolapse were recruited from a colorectal surgery clinic of a tertiary teaching hospital in Gwangju, Korea. Physical symptoms related to rectal prolapse (pelvic organ prolapse distress, POPD; colorectal-anal distress, CRAD; and urinary distress, UD), depression, and QOL were measured. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and two-way analysis of variance. Results: The interaction between POPD symptoms and depressive symptoms (F=4.51, p=.037) affected physical QOL. The interaction between POPD (F=9.66, p=.003) and CRAD symptoms (F=7.48, p=.008), respectively, and depressive symptoms affected mental QOL. Depressive symptoms had a significant main effect on the physical QOL in the CRAD (F=6.22, p=.014) and UD (F=6.01, p=.016) groups and on mental QOL in the UD group (F=24.54, p<.001). Conclusion: Physical and depressive symptoms should be considered together to improve the QOL in women with rectal prolapse. Nursing interventions and medical treatments to decrease rectal prolapse-related physical and depressive symptoms are required to improve QOL in women with symptomatic rectal prolapse.
Purpose: To investigate changes in Quality of life (QOL) and related factors in patients with thyroid cancer undergoing Radioactive Iodine remnant ablation (RAI). Methods: Data were collected longitudinally 3 times for 6 months (2 weeks post-surgery, post RAI, 3 months post RAI) in a hospital located in Seoul. Questionnaires were used to measure levels of physical symptoms, anxiety, depression, and QOL. Ninety-eight patients with thyroid cancer who had RAI were included in the analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS (18.0). Results: Findings for the three data collection times respectfully were: mean scores for physical symptoms, 0.53, 1.21 and 0.62, patients with depression, 47%, 36.7% and 37.7%, patients with anxiety, 18.4 %, 19.4% and 20.4%, mean scores for QOL, 7.06, 7.01 and 7.28. QOL score was highest 3 months post RAI (p=.031). In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, depression and fatigue were predicting factors for low QOL at all data collection times. Dysponia was a predicting factor for low QOL post RAI and 3 months post RAI. Conclusion: To increase QOL, it is necessary to provide information in advance regarding physical & psychological symptoms and to develop nursing intervention programs to decrease depression and fatigue.

Purpose: This is a descriptive study to identify the relationship of quality of life and learning style of the elderly. Method: 106 elderly persons living in Seoul were surveyed using a questionnaire to identify their demographic characteristics, learning styles, and perceived quality of life. Results: 17% of the respondents were in the low quality of life (QOL). The QOL showed significantly different according to learning styles, gender, current health status, perceived level of current life happiness, and monthly pocket money. The highest average score of QOL was found in the Assimilator group, and the lowest average score was found in the Diverger group. Conclusions: Among the four categories significantly related to QOL, the case of learning style and current health status are the categories by which nurses can intervene to improve QOL. Thus, nurses should emphasize the relationship to improve the clients' QOL. Since the scores of QOL were high for the Assimilator and Accomodator groups, nurse should identify the learning style of the elderly as soon as possible and then help those who are under-developed, to further develop Assimilator and Accomodator learning styles.

As an exploratory research to understand the nature of relationships between harbors and their neighboring communities, this study analyzes how harbors influence their residents' quality of life(QOL). The QOL was measured by 18 indicators reconstructed by reviewing relevant literatures. As a result, both Busan and Incheon were found to have statistically significant influence on many of QOL indicators including general expenditure per capita, number of manufacturing factories per capita, rate of housing supply, number of financial agencies per capita, number of cultural assets per capita, number of schools per capita, number of sick-beds per capita, and the size of welfare expenditure per capita.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the related factors of quality of life (QOL) among patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Methods: Patients diagnosed with COPD (N=230) were recruited from four hospitals in Kyeong-Nam province, from March 2 to November 30, 2010. The data collection instruments were the Short Form 36, perceived dyspnea measure by Modified Medical Research Council, COPD and Asthma Sleep Impact Scale, COPD Self-efficacy Scale, and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale were used. Following the completion of the data collection instruments Pulmonary function was tested. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and simultaneous multiple regression using SPSS/WIN. Results: The mean QOL of this study was 68.24. Using a multivariate approach, the significant correlates of QOL were depression (${\beta}$=-.37), dyspnea (${\beta}$=-.28), self-efficacy (${\beta}$=.20), and a sufficient degree of household income (${\beta}$=.16). These variables explained 49% of variance in QOL. Conclusion: The study suggests that psychological aspects are an important factor in explaining QOL of the patients. Screening and minimizing depression could be effective strategies in enhancing QOL of patients with COPD and further investigation to reduce depression could warrant the improvement of QOL in patients with COPD.
The purpose of this study was to explore the concept of quality of life for bone marrow transplant (BMT) survivors and to gain understanding of nursing interventions that may improve QOL in this population. The data was gathered from 32 BMT survivors using seven open-ended questions. The items were based on previous research of Ferrell et al., (1992). Content analysis was performed on written responses to seven questions regarding BMT and QOL. The results were as follows : 1. The meaning of QOL for BMT survivors were "being healt", "being able to take a role", "having relationships", "self-accomplishment", "peace of mind", "spiritual well-being", "economic stability" and "being alive". 2. The impact of BMT on physical well-being were "skin impairment", "digestive problems", "infections ", "fatigue/weakness", "arthralgia", "eye dryness". "weight gain", "amenorrhea" and "hand tremor". 3. The impact of BMT on psychological well-being were "fear of recurrence", "sence of peace" and "hope". 4. The impact of BMT on socioeconomic status were "financial burden", "limitation of social activities" and "sence of withdrawal". 5. The impact of BMT on spiritual well-being were "dependency on Supreme Being", "spiritual arousal " and "spiritual maturity". The findings of the study will be useful in constructing a instrument to measure QOL in BMT and in understanding the conceptual basis of QOL for the BMT population.ency on Supreme Being", "spiritual arousal " and "spiritual maturity". Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of Quality of Life (QOL) among workers in public health corporations. Methods: Data were composed of 213 office workers in three public enterprise in Seoul. Data were collected from February 11 to March 20, 2007. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS Win 12.0 program. Results: The mean QOL of the study participants was 82.60. The QOLs of the workers were significantly different according to perceived health status of workers and working hours per week. The QOL of the workers was negatively related to working hours, job stress, and depression, and positively related to the health status, self-esteem, and health promotion lifestyle (HPLS). Significant predictors of QOL were HPLS ${\beta}=.420$), depression (${\beta}=-.291$), self-esteem (${\beta}=.261$), and hours of work per week (${\beta}=-.114$), which explained 63% in the variance of QOL. Conclusion: These results suggest that strategies to enhance HPLS could improve the level of QOL. Further investigations of the direct relationship between QOL and health promotion program is warranted.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the symptoms of allergic rhinitis among university students and assess their quality of life (QOL) in order to establish an effective program for university students with allergic rhinitis. Methods: The data were collected in May, 2012 in a university school health center. The collected data were analyzed in terms of frequency, percentage and mean for the symptom types and QOL among 131 university students with allergic rhinitis. An independent t-test was conducted to determine differences in QOL according to general and disease related characteristics. Results: Symptoms were reported in the following order: nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal itching respectively. The mean score of QOL of the participants was 2.24 (5 point). Nasal symptoms such as rhinorrhea (M=3.16) and nasal obstruction (M=3.12) had the highest score and affected QOL badly in the item analysis. QOL differed according to the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis history, skin test reaction, some symptoms and allergens. Conclusion: To establish an effective management program for increasing QOL among university students with allergic rhinitis, symptom management methods for nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea should be included in the program.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of life and related factors of CVA surgery patients. Method: The subjects were 64 CVA surgery patients who had discharged and received follow up care at the OPD. Data were collected using William's SS-QOL instrument and IADL. And Data were analyzed with SPSS WIN program in which frequency, percentage, t-test, Pearson's correlation and stepwise regression were used to examine the quality of life and related factors. Result: General characteristics related to QOL were marital status and economical status. Depression was the most important factor with influence on QOL in CVA disease patients after surgery. There were further positive correlation between patient's IADL and QOL and between patient's social support and QOL. Meanwhile the patient's depression level was negatively correlated with QOL. Conclusion: Depression was the most important factor with influence on QOL in CVA patients after surgery. Therefore active nursing intervention to decrease depression and to improve patient's physical functional status in needed. And the patient's family should be included in all nursing intervention and patient education so that the patient's quality of life is prompted by the maintenance of optimal wellbeing.

PURPOSE: Central post-stroke pain (CPSP), a chronic pain condition of stroke patients, can impair activities of daily living and worsen the quality of life (QOL), thereby negatively influencing the rehabilitation process. However, CPSP remains an underestimated complication of stroke. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and types of new-onset chronic pain and to identify the relation between pain and QOL in stroke patients. METHODS: All patients hospitalized because of a diagnosis of stroke were included. Questionnaire was used. Pain intensity was measured using Numerical rating scale (NRS), and pain characteristics were assessed using DN4. QOL was measured using SF-36. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the characteristics and pain data, and chi-square test was used to compare QOL categorical data between the nociceptive and neurological pain groups. RESULTS: CPSP development was reported by 34% of the post-stroke pain patients. Perceived QOL was low in both groups, especially with respect to the physical functioning, bodily pain, physical-role functioning, emotional-role functioning, and mental health domains. However, no significant difference was observed in QOL between the nociceptive and neurological pain groups (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that CPSP is a common and disabling complication that is difficult to treat, often decreases QOL, and may negatively affect rehabilitation treatment.
