Anatase nanocrystalline and its tungsten-doped (0.4, 2, and 4 mol %) powders have been synthesized by microwave irradiation through hydrolysis of titanium tetra-isopropoxide (TIP) in aqueous solution. The materials are characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM-EDX, TEM, FT-IR and UV-vis techniques. The nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ particles are 30 nm in nature and doping of tungsten ion decreases their size. As seen in TEM images, the crystallites of W (4 mol %) doped $TiO_2$ are small with a size of about 10 nm. The photocatalytic activity was tested on the degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Catalytic activities of W-doped and pure $TiO_2$ were also compared. The results show that the photocatalytic activity of the W-doped $TiO_2$ photocatalyst is much higher than that of pure $TiO_2$. Degradation decreases from 96 to 50%, during 115 min, when the initial 4-NP concentration increases from 10 to 120 ppm. Maximum degradation was obtained at 35 mg of photocatalyst.
Displacement cascade behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V alloys are investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The embedded atom method (EAM) potential including Ti, Al and V elements is modified by adding Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark (ZBL) potential to describe the short-range interaction among different atoms. The time evolution of displacement cascades at the atomic scale is quantitatively evaluated with the energy of primary knock-on atom (PKA) ranging from 0.5 keV to 15 keV, and that for pure Ti is also computed as a comparison. The effects of temperature and incident direction of PKA are studied in detail. The results show that the temperature reduces the number of surviving Frenkel pairs (FPs), and the incident direction of PKA shows little correlation with them. Furthermore, the increasing temperature promotes the point defects to form clusters but reduces the number of defects due to the accelerated recombination of vacancies and interstitial atoms at relatively high temperature. The cluster fractions of interstitials and vacancies both increase with the PKA energy, whereas the increase of interstitial cluster is slightly larger due to their higher mobility. Compared to pure Ti, the presence of Al and V is beneficial to the formation of interstitial clusters and indirectly hinders the production of vacancy clusters.

The temperature and frequency dependence of the dielectric constant of the BaTiO3 substituted with two types of donor dopants, Nb5+ and Ta5+, respectively, were compared and analyzed. Dielectric specimens of four specific compositions, Ba0.95Nb0.05TiO3, Ba0.90Nb0.10TiO3, Ba0.95Ta0.05TiO3, and Ba0.90Ta0.010TiO3 were prepared by calcining at 1100 ℃ and sintering at 1300 ℃ to have a perovskite structure to measure capacitance. XRD and SEM analysis were used to observe the structure, with particular focus on the integration into the Nb5+ and Ta5+ substituted BaTiO3 crystal lattice. X-ray diffraction peaks in the (200) and (002) planes were observed between 45.10° and 45.45° of the BaTiO3 solid solution substituted with different fractions of Nb5+ and Ta5+. The dielectric properties were analyzed and the relationship between the properties and structure of the substituted BaTiO3 was established. The fine particles and high density of the substituted BaTiO3 were maintained like pure BaTiO3, and in particular, a shift toward the low temperature side of the phase transition temperature range was clearly found, unlike pure BaTiO3. In addition, the phase transition at a temperature higher than the Curie temperature relatively satisfies the modified Curie-Weiss law.
Dental implants have been developed for enhancement of osseointegration. Biocompatibility, bone affinity and surface characteristics of dental implants are very important factors for osseointegration. The aim of the present study was to determine the cytotoxicity and the bone affinity of titanium phosphide(Ti-P) implant material. The Ti-P surface was obtained by vacuum sintering of titanium within compacted hydroxyapatite powder. The composition and the chemical change of the surface were determined by Auger electron spectroscopy. The in vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated by the viability of the bone cells and macrophages obtained from chicken embryo and rat,s peritonium, respectively. For the comparative evaluation, 316L stainless steel, commercially pure titanium and Ti-P materials, prepared in size of 1O.0mm in diameter and 5.0mm in height, were immersed separately in bone cells and macrophages for 10 days. For the evaluation of the in vivo bone affinity, 316L stainless steel, commercially pure titanium and Ti-P materials, prepared in size of 5.0mm in diameter and 10.0mm in length, were implanted after drilling in diameter 5.5mm in femurs of 2 dogs weighing 10Kg more or less. Six weeks after implantation the specimens were prepared for histopathological examination and were observed under light microscope. In comparison of in vitro bone cell viability, Ti-P and commercially pure titanium groups were not significantly different from control group (p>O.1), but 316L stainless steel group was significantly lower than control group(p<0.05). There was no statistical difference in the viability of macrophages between 3 different groups and control group(p>O.l). In comparison of in vivo study, 316L stainless steel and commercially pure titanium showed fibrous encapsulation, but Ti-P showed remarkable new bone formation without any fibrous tissue. The results demonstrate that Ti-P has favorable biocompatibility and bone affinity, and suggest that dental implants with Ti-P surface may enhance osseointegration.
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of process parameter on alpha-case formation of Ti and TiAl castings. The previous studies showed that the molten titanium is excessively reactive to the refractory oxide mold, resulting in alpha-caes of the titanium castings regardless of composition of titanium alloys. However, the behavior of the alpha-case formation of TiAl alloy is not consistent with conventional titanium alloy. In order to investigate the alpha-case formation of Ti and TiAl castings with process parameter, especially the associated factors of investment mold such as mold material, binder and mold preheating temperature. An attempt has been made to characterize the alpha-case of titanium casting by using optical microscope, EDS, XRD, EMPA and hardness profiles. The formation of the alpha-case on the surface of pure titanium during investment casting was rather by that of solid solution with metallic element from mold material. The required mold strength was obtained with $CaZrO_3$ because of the possibility of using water soluble binder. However, the separation phenomenon between facing and back-up mold materials should be considered. The interfacial reaction of TiAl alloy showed different behavior from that of pure titanium and $Al_2O_3$ was best mold materials. The effect of binder as well as mold material on the formation of alpha-case was significant.
Ti and its alloys show the excellent corrosion resistance to chloride environments, but they show less corrosion resistance in HCl, $H_2SO_4$, NaOH, $H_3PO_4$, and especially HF environments at high temperature and concentration. In this study, we used the commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and evaluated the effect of the manufacturing process on the electrochemical properties. We used commercial products of rolled and forged materials, and made additive manufactured materials by DMT (Directed Metal Tooling) method. We annealed each specimen at $760^{\circ}C$ for one hour and then air cooled. We performed anodic polarization test, AC impedance measurement, and Mott-Schottky plot to evaluate the electrochemical properties. Despite of the difference of its microstructure of CP-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys by the manufacturing process, the anodic polarization behavior was similar in 20% sulfuric acid. However, the addition of 0.1% hydrofluoric acid degraded the electrochemical properties. Among three kinds of the manufacturing process, the electrochemical properties of additive manufactured CP-Ti, and Ti-6Al-4V alloys were the lowest. It is noted that the test materials showed a Warburg impedance in HF acid environments.
In this study, we synthesized a combination of graphene oxide (GO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) and confirm that GO can be used for CO2 photoreduction. TiO2 exhibited highly efficient combination with other conventional electric charges generated by these paration phenomenon for suppression of hole-electron recombination. This improved the efficiency of CO2 photoreduction. The synthetic form of GO-TiO2 used in this study was agraphene sheet surrounded by TiO2 powder. Efficiency and stability were enhanced by combination of GO and TiO2. In a CO2 photoreduction experiment, the highest CO conversion rate was 0.652 μmol/g·h in GO10-TiO2 (2.3-fold that of pure TiO2) and the highest CH4 production rate was 0.037 μmol/g·h in GO0.1-TiO2 (2.4-fold that of pure TiO2). GO enhances photocatalytic efficiency by functioning as a support and absorbent, and enabling charge separation. With increasing GO concentration, the CH4 level decreases to~45% due to decreased transfer of electrons. In this study, TiO2 together with GO yielded a different result than the normal doping effect and selective CO2 photoreduction.

To decompose carbon dioxide, which is a representative greenhouse gas, a plasma torch was designed and manufactured. To examine the characteristics of carbon dioxide decomposition via plasma discharge, a case wherein pure carbon dioxide was supplied and a case wherein methane and/or $TiCl_4$ were injected as additives were investigated and compared. The carbon dioxide and methane conversion rate, energy decomposition efficiency, produced gas concentration, carbon monoxide and hydrogen selectivity, carbon-black and $TiO_2$ were also investigated. The maximum carbon dioxide conversion rate was 28.9% when pure carbon dioxide was supplied; 44.6% when $TiCl_4$ was injected as am additive; and 100% percent when methane was injected as an additive. Therefore, this could be explained that the methane injection showed the highest carbon dioxide decomposition. Furthermore, the carbon-black and $TiO_2$ were compared with each commercial materials through XRD and SEM. It was found that the carbon-black that was produced in this study is similar for commercial materials. It was found that the $TiO_2$ that was produced in this study is suitable for photocatalyst and pigment because it has mixed anataze and rutile.
The $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$/AC composite was prepared by sol-gel process with ultrasonication. The prepared composite was characterized by SEM, XRD and TG analysis, and their electrochemical behaviors were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and charge-discharge test in 1M $LiBF_4$/PC electrolyte. From the results, the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ particles coated on AC surface had an average particle size of 100 nm and showed spinel-framework structure. When the potential range of the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$/AC composite was extended from 0.1 to 2.5 V, redox peaks and electric double layer property were revealed. The initial discharge capacity of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$/AC composite was 218 mAh $g^{-1}$ at 1 C. The enhancement of discharge capacity was attributed to electric double layer of added activated carbon.

Pt thin films on Cr or Ti interlayer were deposited onto a tungsten carbide(WC) substrate by the ion beam assisted DC magnetron sputtering. The various atomic percent of Cr and Ti underneath of the Pt films were prepared to examine the total thin film characteristics. The microstructure and surface analysis of the specimen were conducted by using the SEM, XRD and AFM. Mechanical properties such as hardness and adhesion strength of Pt thin film also were examined. The interlayer of pure Ti was formed with 40 nm thickness while that of pure Cr was done with 50 nm as standard reference. The growth rate of either Cr or Ti thin film was almost same under the same deposition conditions. The SEM images showed that anisotropic grain of Pt thin films consisting of dense columnar structures irrespectively grew from the different target compositions. The values of hardness and adhesion strength of Cr/Pt thin film coated on a WC substrate were higher than those of Ti/Pt thin film.
