  • Micro-EDM is widely used in metallic pattern, electronics, nuclear power and industry in the form of precision process. The improvement of Electro Discharge Machining has been on a steady progress since $19^{th}$ century. The technology has overcome the limits of the traditional precision process, enabling micro-EDM, micro electrolytic machining, micro drilling, micro punching and laser beam machining, which create versatile products with smaller sizes. What have been known about the major feature of Micro-EDM is high thermal energy so that their products are free from the hardness of their products as long as they are electrical conductor. However, each metal is suspected to have different features and natures even if they are created through the same procedure. In this thesis, the methodology of Micro-EDM and how to categorize them are explained. Also, the nature of the examined materials with surface shape and surface roughnes are analyzed. The results of the experiments are expected to understand surface roughness and workability of other materials for Micro-EDM.

  • Current need of weight reduction in automotive part increases the application for high strength steel (HSS). The various types of high strength steels have been used to produce chassis part, control arms and trailing arms for weight reduction and increasing of fatigue durability such as dual phase steel (DP) and ferrite bainite steel (FB). But, DP and FB steels have proven to show inferiority in durability as well as press formability. Edge cracking occurred often in flange forming and hole expansion processes is the major failure encountered. This paper discussed the behavior of edge stretchability of high strength steel of DP and FB steels. Experimental works have been conducted to study the effect of punch clearance and burr direction on hole expansion ratio (HER). Also finite element simulation (FEM) has been preformed to clarify the mechanism of flange crack and support the experimental results on HER of DP and FB steels. It was simulated the whole process of blanking process following by hole expansion process and ductile fracture criterion named the modified Cockcroft-Latham model which was used to capture the fracture initiation. From the hole expansion tests and FEM simulation studies it was concluded that ferrite bainite steel showed better stretch-flangeability than dual phase steel. It was attributed to the lower work hardening rate of ferrite bainite steel than dual phase steel at the sheared edge.

  • The purpose of this paper is the development of measurement algorithm for green-sheet based on the digital image processing technique. The Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic (LTCC) technology can be defined as a way to produce multilayer circuits with the help of single tapes, which are used to apply conductive, dielectric and / or resistive pastes on. These single green-sheets have to be laminated together and fired in one step all. Main functionality of the green-sheet film measurement algorithm is to measure the position and size of the punching hole in each single layer. The line scan camera coupled with motorized X-Y stage is used for developing the algorithm. In order to measure the entire film area using several scanning steps, the overlapping method is used. In the process of development of the algorithm based on the image processing and analysis, strong background technology and know-how have been accumulated.

  • A mechanical press joining was investigated in ender for joining A1-5052 sheets for automobile body weight reduction. Static tensile and fatigue tests were conducted using tensile-shear specimens for evaluation of fatigue strength of the joint. During Tox joining process for A1-5052 plates, using the current sheet thickness and punch diameter, the optimal applied punching force was found to be 32 kN under the current joining condition. For the static tensile-shear experiment results, the fracture mode is classified into interface fracture mode, in which the neck area fractured due to influence of neck thickness, and pull-out fracture mode due to influence of plastic deformation of the joining area. And, during fatigue tests for the A1-5052 tensile shear specimens, interface failure mode occurred in the region of low cycle. The fatigue endurance limit approached to 6 percents of the maximum applied load, considering fatigue lifetime of $2.5\times10^6$ cycles.

  • The incorporation of sustainability principles into the structural engineering design of buildings is increasingly important. Historically the focus of improvements to the environmental performance of structures has been operational energy considerations. Current research has highlighted the requirement for changing the approach by increasing the consideration of embodied energy in structures. This research was conducted to build on previous research by the authors in quantifying the contribution of column optimization to the embodied energy performance of concrete framed buildings. Ultimately, the authors intend to develop mechanisms through which sustainable design can be quantified, enabling alleviation prior to construction. Columns are a key structural element to consider as part of this development process. The outcomes of this assessment reinforced previous findings, observing that reduced structural weight as a result of other sustainable design measures carries manifold benefits include column design savings. Through the quantification of the embodied energy outcomes during this research phase, the columns were shown to contribute up to 19.71% of the total embodied energy of the structural system dependent upon construction technique used.

  • The ground anchor support system may not be occasionally used because of space limitations in urban excavation sites nearby the existing structures. In this case, soil nailing system with relatively short length of nails could be efficiently adopted as an alternative method. The general soil nailing support system, however, may result in excessive deformations particularly in an excavation zone of the existing weak subsoils. Pretensioning the soil nails then could play important roles to reduce deformations mainly in the upper part of the nailed-soil excavation system as well as to improve local stability. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PSN (Pretension Soil Nailing), is developed to reduce both facing displacements and ground surface settlements in top-down excavation process as well as to increase the global stability. Up to now, the analytical procedure and design technique are proposed to evaluate maximum pretension force and stability of the PSN system. Also, proposed are techniques to determine the required thickness of a shotcrete facing and to estimate probability of a failure against the punching shear, Based on the proposed procedure and technique, effects of the radius of a influence circle and dilatancy angle on the thickness of a shotcrete facing, bonded length and safety factors are analyzed. In addition, effects of the reduction of deformations expected by pretension of the soil nails are examined in detail throughout an illustrative example and the $FLAC^{2D}$ program analysis. And a numerical approach is proposed PSN system using the shear strength reduction technique with the $FLAC^{2D}$ program.

  • As devices such as smartphones, tablet PC, and wearable devices have been miniaturized, the connectors that go into the devices are also designed to be very small. The connector combines the plug and the receptacle to transfer electricity. As devices are miniaturized, the contact shape is formed by partially thinning the thickness of the raw material of the terminal in order to lower the coupling height of the plug and receptacle. The product used in this study is a receptacle terminal used for 0.4mm pitch board to board connector among fine pitch connectors. When the material thickness is reduced by forging the receptacle terminal, the width change of the pin is checked. To reduce the thickness of the material by forging, pre-notching is applied in the first step, forging in the second step, and notching in the third step. After forming the width dimension of the pin to 0.28 mm in the pre-notching process, in the forging process, the material thickness 0.08 mm and 0.02 mm (25%) were forged and the thickness was changed to 0.06 mm and the width change amount of the pin was measured. The facility produced 10,000 pieces at 400 SPM using a Yamada Dobby (MXM-40L) press, and thirty pins were measured and the average value was shown. After forging by using C5210-H (HP) and NKT322-EH, which are frequently used in connectors, analyze the amount of change in each material. The effect of punching oil on forging is investigated by appling FM-200M, which is highly viscous, and FL-212, fast drying oil. This study aims to minimize mold modification by predicting the amount of material change after forging.

  • This paper describes the finite element analysis and die design change of cold heading punching process to increase the cold forging tool life and reduce the tool wear and stress concentration. Through this study, the optimization of punch tool design has been studied by an analysis of tool stress and wear distribution to improve the tool life. Plastic deformation analysis was carried out in order to understand the cold heading process between tool and workpiece stress distribution. Cold heading punch die design was set up to each process with different four types analysis progressing, the cold heading punch dies shapes with combination of point angle and punch edge corner radius shapes of cold forging dies, punch die material properties and frictional coefficient. The design parameters of point angle and corner radius of punch die geometry, die material properties and frictional coefficient were selected to apply optimization with the DoE (design of experiment) and Taguchi method. DoE and Taguchi method was performed to optimize the cold heading punch die design parameters optimization for bolt head cold forging process, it was possible to expect an reduce the cold heading punch die wear to the 37 % compared with current using cold heading punch in the shop floor.

  • Self-piercing riveting (SPR) process is gaining popularity due to its many advantages. The SPR does not require a pre-drilled hole and has capability to join a wide range of similar or dissimilar materials and combinations of materials. This study investigated the fatigue strength of self-piercing rivet joint with aluminum alloy (Al-5052) and steel (SPCC) sheets. Static and fatigue tests on tensile-shear specimens were conducted. From the static strength aspect, the optimal punching force for the specimen with upper SPCC (U.S) sheet and lower aluminum alloy(L.A) sheets was 34 kN. During static test the specimens fractured in pull-out fracture mode due to influence of plastic deformation of joining area. There was a relationship between applied load amplitude $P_{amp}$ and number of cycles N ; $P_{amp}=19588N_f^{-0.211}$ and $P_{amp}=4885N_f^{-0.083}$ for U.S-L.A and U.A-L.S specimens, respectively. U.A-L.S fatigue specimens failed due to fretting crack initiation around the rivet neck between upper and lower sheets.

  • A composite material is composed of a reinforcement and a matrix, which determine mechanical characteristics of the molded part. There is no doubt that the properties of a composite material depend not only on the characteristics of the matrix but also on the structure of glass fiber mat and a fiber type of reinforcement. Therefore it is very important to study the composites of reinforcement and the matrix, and to control the fiber type in the process of molding of composite materials. In this study, the specimen was made of a glass fiber mat of 6-7mm thickness by scattering it in the air after cutting the glass fiber mat with needle punching makes change according to the type of needle and the number of times of stretching. First the sheet was made by means of a hot-press after accumulating a matrix and a glass fiber according to each mat structure of glass fiber. It was heated the manufactured sheet with the dry oven and molded it a secondary high temperature compression by a 30 ton oilhydraulic press. A definition of a correlation coefficient is showed up during this period and find it out with the relation of the fiber-matrix separation and the fiber orientation. We studied effects of the glass fiber mat structures on the correlation coefficient.
