  • This study presents failure mechanisms for the pull-out strength of headed reinforcement for upper bound solution based on the limit theorem. The failure mechanisms to be presented follow the failure surface pattern of punching shear failure found in the joints of slab with a column. Several failure surfaces of the mechanisms have different characteristics for dissipation works and these mechanisms are able to interpret the role of bar details surrounding headed reinforcement.

  • The sheet metal shearing process is normally used in the precision elements such as semi-conductor components. In precision elements, burrs usually reduce the quality of machined parts and cause interference, jamming and misalignment during assembly procedures and because of their sharpness, they can be safety hazard to personnel. Furthermore, not only burrs are hard to predict and avoid, but also deburring, the process of removing burrs, is time-consuming and costly. In order to get the burr-free parts, therefore, we developed the precise burr measuring system using the laser. Using the X-Y precious table, we used vertical measuring method. Through the laser measurement system, we gain the minute analog signal, so this signal was amplified by the electric circuit. Finally, we gained the realtime burr data using A/D converter, PC. By introducing the novel laser measuring method which employing vertical measurement mechanism, we could get fast and precious burr data. Through the experiments, the accuracy of the developed system is proved. The burr height measured during the punching process can be used for automatic deburring and in-situ aligning.

  • In this paper, hole expanding tests are carried out in order to identify the effect of the hole process condition on the hole expanding ratio. Specimens with two different hole conditions are prepared: one is produced with punching process; and the other is reamed after punching to get smoother hole surface. The experimental results show that the facture mechanism and the hole expanding ratio are quite different with respect to the hole condition. The hole expanding ratio of a punched specimen is much smaller than that of a reamed one due to the difference of surface roughness and internal defects. For the thorough investigation of those effects, tensile tests of a specimen with a hole are performed. The fracture strain is obtained with different hole conditions and a finite element analysis of the hole flanging process carried out. The experimental results are confirmed and reevaluated by finite element analysis of the hole flanging process with ductile fracture criterion proposed.

  • The deformation of sheet metal due to the residual stress during blanking or piercing process, is numerically simulated by means of a commercial finite element code. Two dimensional plain strain problem is solved and then its result is applied to the deformation analysis of the lead frame. The plain strain element is applied to the 2D problem to observe the Von Mises equivalent stress concentration at the both shearing edges. As the punch penetrates into the sheet material, the stress concentration generated on both edges is getting increased to be the shearing surface. The limits of the punching depth applied to the simulation is 16% and 24% of the sheet thickness for the plain strain element and the hexahedral element, respectively. The hexahedral element and the limit of punching depth were applied to the deformation analysis of the lead frame for the blanking process. The FEM results for the lead deformation were very good agreement with the experimental ones. This paper shows that the coarse mesh has enabled to analyze the lead deformation generated due to the blanking mechanism. This simple approach to save the calculation time will be very effective to the design of the blanking tools in industries.

  • LTCC(Low temperature co-fired ceramic) is being recognized as a significant packaging material of electrical devices for the advantages such as relatively low temperature being needed for process, low conductor resistance and high printing resolution. In the process of LTCC electrical devices, the punched via-hole quality is one of the most important factors on the performance of the device. However, its mechanism is very complicated and optimization of the process seems difficult. In this paper, to clarify the process, via-hole punching experiments were carried out and the punched holes were examined in terms of their burr formation. The effects of thickness of PET sheet and ceramic sheet and punch-to-die clearance on via-hole quality were also discussed. Optimum process conditions are proposed and a factor k is introduced to express effect of the process variables.

  • This Study is performed to analyze the behavior of inverted T-shaped Composite Basement Wall(CBW). For this, it is purposed to analyze the failure mechanisms of inverted T-shaped composite basement wall and propose the method of evaluating strength for design. The failure mechanisms would be devided into 4 type mechanisms from previous experimental results, that is hanger failure, punching shear failure, flexural failure and the buckling of H-pile. A strength evaluation procedure for CBW is induced by analyzing respective failure mechanism. Then, the strength for actual structure consisted of inverted T-shaped composite basement wall was evaluated and the expected failure mechanism was determined.

  • Bridges are structures where safety must be ensured. Generally, the destruction mechanism of bridge deck shows punching shear. Lately, the high-strength concrete is often used to increase the lifespan of bridges. The benefits of using the high-strength concrete are that it increases the durability and strength. On the contrary, it reduces the cross-section of the bridges. This study suggested the optimal thickness of bridge deck with application of high-strength concrete and the study evaluated its structural performance experimentally. The evaluation result shows that 180 mm and 190 mm of thickness are optimal for 100 MPa and 120 MPa high-strength concrete bridge deck respectively.

  • For high production rate of parts requiring multiple operations such as punching, blanking, or other operations are generally done with progressive dies. However, progressive die is generally limited to use for sheet metal forming due to the technical difficulties in rod or bulk material. This study proposes a new technique of progressive die and forming process for asymmetric automotive door striker, which is conventionally manufactured with separate tandem processes using solid rod. In order to design forming process and die, FEM simulation was performed to divide proper intermediate processes and analyze its formability. As a result, Forming processes were divided into 3 stages with upper and side punches and also, workpiece feeding and location mechanism was designed and manufactured in this study. Finally, forming tryouts were carried out by using the manufactured progressive die to verify the forming quality and productivity.

  • This study evaluates the seismic performance of post-tensioned(PT) flat plate frames with or without slab bottom reinforcement. For this purpose, 3 and 9 story PT flat plate frames designed only considering gravity loads. This study conducts a nonlinear static pushover analysis. This study use an analytical model which is able to represent punching shear failure and fracture mechanism. The analytical results showed that seismic performance of PT flat plate frame is strongly influenced by the existence of slab bottom reinforcement through column. By placing slab bottom reinforcement in PT flat plate frame, lateral strength and deformation capacity are significantly increased.

The laser burr measuring system consists of the laser probe, the photo detector, the achromatic doublet lens, and the rotary & the X-Y table. In previous reports, we used simple vertical measuring method. But, as we used relatively bigger laser spot diameter and had the limited reflection angle, it was difficult to obtain the precise measuring results. So called, the spot size effect makes the profile of burr measured distorted and the burr height measured smaller. By introducing the novel laser measuring method which employing the achromatic lens system and the tilting mechanism, we could make the spot size smaller and get the appropriate beam direction angle. Through the experiments, the accuracy of the developed system is proved. The burr height measured during the punching process can be used for automatic deburring and in-situ aligning.
