  • In this paper, we study the mechanism of lead deformation by numerically simulating the stamping process by means of a commercial finite element code. It is very important to analyze effects that the lead shape makes on the lead deformation, because the lead shape is often modified in order to minimize the deformation or to increase the buckling critical load of the punch. Therefore the stamping process, first, numerically simulated by considering as a quasi-static problem. Second, the effect on the lead deformation due to the lead shape variation, a linear lead geometry and a bent lead, was numerically analyzed and discussed. Finally, the punching order was optimized fur multi-lead generating stamping process. The results show that the bent lead is little bit more shifted than the linear lead after the punching process. But the bent lead is vertically less deformed than the linear lead. The punching order to successively generate the lead is good to keep the lead space uniform. The results will be very effectively applied for the design of the blanking or punching dies in industry.

  • The shearing process for the sheet metal is normally used in the precision elements such as semi-conductor components. In these precision elements, the burr formation brings a bad effect on the system assembly and demands the additional de-burring process. In this paper, we have developed the desktop-type precision punching system to investigate the burr formation mechanism and present kinematically Punch-die auto aligning methodology, for the purpose of burr unifomizing and minimizing, between the rectangular shaped punch and die. By using the scanning electron microscope, the aligned punching results are compared with the miss-aligned ones. Also, we measured the relative burr heights using the self-designed laser measuring device for insitu self aligning. Since it is hard to get the perfect, so called, burr-free edges during the shearing process, we introduced the ultrasonic do-burring machine. The de-burring operation was carried out by a novel do-burring method, the reversal flow resistance method, under different machining loads and abrasive types. The final do-burring results show the validity of our punching do-burring system pursuing the burr-free punched elements.

  • The shearing process for the sheet metal is normally used in the precision elements such as semi-conductor components. In these precision elements, the burr formation brings a bad effect on the system assembly and demands the additional de-burring process, so this imposes high cost on manufacturing. In this paper, we have developed the in-situ auto-aligning precision meso-punching system to investigate the burr formation mechanism and ultimately minimize burr. Firstly, we introduced the punch-die contact sensing method to align the punch and the die at initial state prior to the punching process. Secondly, by using the low-price semi-conductor laser, burr formed on the edges is measured intermittently during the punching process. We could, finally, make burr on the sheet metal uniformized and minimized by controlling of the precision X - Y table, $1\;{\mu}m$ resolution, and measuring burr height by semiconductor laser. Experimental results show the validity of our system for pursuing the burr-free punched elements.

  • Automatic FPC punching instrument for the improvement of working condition and cost saving is introduced in this paper. FPC(flexible printed circuit) is used to detect the contact position of K/B and button like a cellular phone. Depending on the quality of the printed ink and position of reference punching point to the FPC, the resistance and current are varied to the malfunctioning values. The size of reference punching point is 2mm and the above. Because the punching operation is done manually, the accuracy of the punching degree is varied with operator's condition. Recently, The punching accuracy has deteriorated severely to the 2mm punching reference hall so that assembly of the K/B has hardly done. To improve this manual punching operation to the FPC, automatic FPC punching system is introduced. Precise mechanical parts like a 5-step stepping motor and ball screw mechanism are designed and tested and low cost PC camera is used for the sake of cost down instead of using high quality vision systems for the FA. 3D Mechanical design tool(Pro/E) is used to manage the exact tolerance circumstances and avoid design failures. Simulation is performed to make the complete vision based punching machine before assembly, and this procedure led to the manufacturing cost saving. As the image processing algorithms, dilation, erosion, and threshold calculation is applied to obtain an exact center position from the FPC print marks. These image processing algorithms made the original images having various noises have clean binary pixels which is easy to calculate the center position of print marks. Moment and Least square method are used to calculate the center position of objects. In this development circumstance, Moment method was superior to the Least square one at the calculation of speed and against noise. Main control panel is programmed by Visual C++ and graphical Active X for the whole management of vision based automatic punching machine. Operating modes like manual, calibration, and automatic mode are added to the main control panel for the compensation of bad FPC print conditions and mechanical tolerance occurring in the case of punch and die reassembly. Test algorithms and programs showed good results to the designed automatic punching system and led to the increase of productivity and huge cost down to law material like FPC by avoiding bad quality.

  • Thinner and lighter structural members can be designed by utilizing the high stiffness and toughness, and high compressive strength of UHPC(ultra high performance concrete), which reaches up to 200MPa. The punching shear capacity of UHPC was investigated in this paper aiming for the application of UHPC to bridge decks. Six square slabs were fabricated and punching shear test was performed under fixed boundary condition. Different thicknesses of test slabs, which were 40mm and 70mm, were selected. The shape ratio of loading plates were ranged between 1.0~2.5. 40mm thickness slabs showed longer softening region after the peak load and, on the other hand, 70mm thickness slabs revealed a more brittle shear failure. Experimental results were analyzed using various existing punching shear predicting equations. Ductal$^{(R)}$ equation and JSCE equation better predicted for 40mm slabs, and Harajli et al. equation and ACI-Ductal$^{(R)}$ equation better suited for 70mm slabs. Nevertheless generally they didn't well predict the test results. A new punching shear equation which was derived based on the actual failure mechanism was proposed. The proposed equation appeared to better predict the punching shear strength of UHPC than other available equations.

  • A method to design a critical height of embankments is presented so as to mobilize fully soil arching in pile-supported embankments. The behavior of the load transfer of embankment weights on pile cap beams was investigated by a series of model tests performed on pile-supported embankments with relatively wide space between cap beams. The model tests explained that the behavior of the load transfer depended very much on the height of embankments, because soil arching could be mobilized in pile-supported embankments only under enough high embankments. The measured vertical loads on cap beams coincided with the predicted ones estimated by the theoretical equations, which have been presented in the previous studies on the basis of load transfer mechanisms according to either the punching shear failure mode during low filling stage or the soil arching failure mode during high filling stage. The mechanism of the load transfer was shifted beyond a critical height of embankment from the punching shear mechanism to the soil arching mechanism. Therefore, in order to mobilize soil arching in pile-supported embankments, the embankments should be designed at least higher than the critical height. A theoretical equation to estimate the critical height could be derived by equalizing the vertical loads estimated by the load transfer mechanisms on the basis of both the punching shear and the soil arching. The derived theoretical equation could predict very well the experimental critical height of embankment.

  • Recently, the NAT middlebox widely deployed in the home network environment prohibits DM operations from reaching user devices behind NAT. In this article, we focus on NAT issues to manage home network devices. Particularly, we discuss standardization efforts, and present our proposal to deploy DM services for VoIP and IPTV devices under NAT. By slightly changing behaviors of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Manager and Agent, and defining additional Management Objects (MOs) to gather NAT binding information, we could solve the NAT traversal problem under symmetric NAT. Moreover, we propose an enhanced method to search the UDP hole binding time of the NAT box. We applied our method to randomly selected 22 VoIP devices out of 194 NATed hosts in the real broadband network and have achieved 99% of the success ratio for exchanging SNMP request messages and 26% of enhancement for searching the UDP hole binding time.

  • LTCC(Low temperature co-fired ceramic) is being recognized as a significant packaging material of electrical devices for the advantages such as relatively low temperature being needed for process, low conductor resistance and high printing resolution. In the process of LTCC electrical devices, the punched via-hole quality is one of the most important factors on the performance of the device. However, its mechanism is very complicated and optimization of the process seems difficult. In this paper, to clarify the process, via-hole punching experiments were carried out and the punched holes were examined in terms of their burr formation. The effects of thickness of PET sheet, ceramic sheet and punch-to- die clearance on via-hole quality were also discussed. Optimum process conditions are proposed and a factor $\kappa$ is introduced to express effect of the process variables.

  • Two parallel wide flange built-up beams are widely used as struts in resisting lateral earth pressure because of the effectiveness in structure and construction. In a certain structural system, the reinforced concrete columns are to be placed at the intersection where two perpendicular beams cross each other, the square part of the joint being filled with concrete. In the punching shear mechanism of the beam-column joint, the radial deformation caused due to shear cracking will be constrained by the spring action of the squarely encompassed beam flanges. As a result, the punching shear strength of the joint concrete can be expected to be increased. To verify this phenomenon experiments have been performed for various constraining elements and distances between columns and constraints. Test results are compared with the approximation analysis formula which has been proposed in this study, based on the code formula. The results calculated by the proposed equation show comparatively close agreement with the punching shear strength detected from the test.

  • The mechanism of load transfer by punching shear in pile-supported embankments is investigated. Based on the geometric configuration of the punching shear observed in sand fills on soft ground, a theoretical analysis is carried out to predict the embankment loads transferred on a cap beam according to punching shear developed in pile-supported embankments. The equation presented by the theoretical analysis was able to consider the effect of various factors affecting the vertical loads transferred on the cap beam. The reliability of the presented theoretical equation is investigated by comparing it with the results of a series of model tests. The model tests were performed on cap beams, which had two types of width; one is narrow width and the other is wide width. Sand filling was performed through seven steps. Two types of loading pattern were applied at each filling step; one is the long-term loading, in which sand fills at each filling step were kept for 24 hours, the other is the short-term loading, in which sand fills at each filling step were kept for 2 hours. The vertical loads measured in all model tests show good agreement with the ones predicted by the theoretical equation. Finally, the predicted vertical loads also show good agreement with the vertical loads measured in a well-instrumented pile-supported embankment in field, where cap beams were placed on too wide space.
