  • Brittleness index (BI) is an important property of rocks because it is a good index to predict rockburst. Due to its importance, several empirical and soft computing (SC) models have been proposed in the literature based on the punch penetration test (PPT) results. These models are very important as there is no clear-cut experimental means for measuring BI asides the PPT which is very costly and time consuming to perform. This study used a novel Multivariate Adaptive regression spline (MARS), M5P, and white-box ANN to predict the BI of rocks using the available data in the literature for an improved BI prediction. The rock density, uniaxial compressive strength (σc) and tensile strength (σt) were used as the input parameters into the models while the BI was the targeted output. The models were implemented in the MATLAB software. The results of the proposed models were compared with those from existing multilinear regression, linear and nonlinear particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) based models using similar datasets. The coefficient of determination (R2), adjusted R2 (Adj R2), root-mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) were the indices used for the comparison. The outcomes of the comparison revealed that the proposed ANN and MARS models performed better than the other models with R2 and Adj R2 values above 0.9 and least error values while the M5P gave similar performance to those of the existing models. Weight partitioning method was also used to examine the percentage contribution of model predictors to the predicted BI and tensile strength was found to have the highest influence on the predicted BI.

  • SP test has been confirmed the availability, however the application of SP test is hampered because the relation of stress-strain and load-displacement is not determined definitely. This study suggested an evaluation technique of plastic flow characteristic for X20CrMoV121 steel weldment through inverse analysis using SP test and finite element analysis(FEA). From the result, good agreement was found in load-displacement curves obtained from SP test and FEA. Also, The behavior of load-displacement curve from FEA show a rule that load is increase with increasing K(strength coefficient) and displacement is increase with increasing n(work hardening index). From the inverse analysis, true stress-strain curve could be obtained for each local structure of weldment. And the CGHAZ and WM, which showed lower load- displacement behavior, have smaller work hardening index, while FGHAZ have the largest index.

  • In this study, the possibility of evaluating the peculiar fracture strength of weldment in high strength steels was investigated by means of a small punch(SP) test. In order to obtain the ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) of SP energy by which the fracture strength of weldment in structural steels such as SS41 and SM53B steels had been evaluated in our preceding publication, the effects of notches and loading rates on SP energy were discussed. It was found that the correspondence of SP energy to critical COD at test temperature -196.deg. C showed a linear relation with some deviation. The empirical correlation with scatter band, Esp/(Esp)p = 1.67[.delta./(.delta./sub c//(.delta./sub c/)/sub p/]-0.55, was developed between the SP energy ratio and critical COD ratio of each weld structure compared with parent material at test temperature -196.deg. C. In addition, there did not appear to be a significant effect of test materials and specimen size etc. on the correlation.

  • IC leadframe needs precision shape for good efficiency. Friction conditions also have a significant impact on blanking deformation. Therefore, studying the friction produced by the tribology between die and materials becomes necessary. In this study, in order to measure mechanical properties and frictions for leadframe materials such as Ni alloys and coppers, tensile test and straight pulling friction test are executed. In particular, the effect of clearance on the blanking characteristics depending on friction coefficient is examined by finite element simulation. From the finite element simulation, the metal flow, side pressure of punch and crack initiation are evaluated according to the leadframe materials.

  • Pre-coated sheet materials are a cost-effective and environmentally attractive alternative to conventional sheet materials coated after forming. At present but the high scratch sensitivity of coating used for pre-coated metal sheet is a major limitation to use of these materials. Because of high scratch sensitivity, products made by pre-coated metal sheet are not formed by conventional design method. This study has been performed to investigate scratch characteristic of non-vinyl pre-coated metal (PCM) sheet. Using the simple U-bending test equipment, three non-vinyls PCM's were tested. This paper provides the results of bending tests showing the influence of sheet surface texture, tool material and process conditions. It was found that the influence of punch, die clearance and tool material had an effect upon the scratch characteristic.

  • The object of this study is to develop a reliable FEM simulation technique for the analysis of can making process using PAM-STAMP software. The processes consist of doming and necking in addition to drawing, redrawing. After body making process, this study analyzed the stability for internal pressure by simulating buckling test. Through these technique, we estimated the dome reversal pressure of steel D&I Can for various can profile and process conditions. From this study, we found the cause and mechanism of wrinkling during necking process. This mechanism is largely affected by can wall thickness and the clearance between knock out punch and necking die. The dome reversal pressure improves with increasing dome depth. These results validate the usefulness of the developed simulation technique for the analysis of body making process and optimization of the dome profile.

  • The square cup drawing of magnesium alloy AZ31 $(aluminum\;3\%,\;Zinc\;1\%)$ sheets was studied by experimental approach in various temperatures (200, 250, 300, 350, $400^{\circ}C$) when blank holding force (BHF) was controlled in real-time. And so on, the drawability was measured with the different die and punch coating. The square cup drawing test was performed by three different coated punches (CrN, TiCN, Non-coated). BHF was set about 2.0 KN, forming speed was 50 mm/min, blank thickness were 0.5, 1.0mm and the cup size was 40 mm by 60 mm after forming. The experimental data of square cup drawing test show that the tools coating and temperature were effect on the drawbility.

  • 2024 Al alloys were severely deformed by equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) to obtain an ultrafine grain structure. The more deformation amount increased, the more grain size decreased. Most of the grain structure were changed from elongated to equiaxed shape with increasing pass number. The morphology of S' phases was also changed from rod-type to spherical type. The grain size of 6 passed specimen was 100 to 200 nm, and the size of S' phases was about 10 nm in the microstructure. XRD measurements have revealed that the texture formed by plastic deformation disappeared in the 6 passed specimen. SP test results described that the start of crack propagation occurred at the transition zone between plastic bending and membrane stretching because of small elongation. The maximum strength of ECA pressed specimen increased 1.9 GPa to 2.9 GPa with increasing pass number.

  • This study is concerned with deep drawability of magnesium sheets(AZ31B) at the warm conditions. Especially the dependency on forming speed has been investigated at the temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$. Deep drawing test has been carried out at the temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$. The die and blank holder are kept at test temperature by local heating and the punch is kept at room temperature by cooling technique. The magnesium sheets called AZ31B with the thickness of 0.5mm have been applied to deep drawing of circular cup. The drawability has been estimated at the conditions of forming speed (0.1, 1, 10 mm/sec). The results of deep drawing experiments show that the drawability is better at $300^{\circ}C$. Also the deep drawability is improved at the low speed(1mm/sec).

  • Fine blanking is a specialized form of blanking where there is no fracture zone when shearing. This is achieved by compressing the whole part and then an upper and lower punch extract the blank. This allows the process to hold very tight tolerances, and perhaps eliminate secondary operations. In the present study, tensile test and numerical simulation has been performed to investigate distribution of deformation and stress of car seat recliner. The commercial ABAQUS/Explicit software was applied for analyzing the stress and strain of the recliner. In analysis, three lock gear has reached the maximum moment on rotational degree of 2.27. This is more than two times than maximum moment of same size recliner, and can be used safely. Therefore, these can use as criterion of actual structural design.
