  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the surface and subsurface flows through the modelling of the model area and facility agricultural complex, and to calculate the groundwater recharge rate through water budget analysis. From results of surface flow modeling, the surface water is flowed to a depth of about 1 to 5 meters from the upper region (northeast) to the lower region (southeast) of the Miryang River. At the M01 point (upper), the observed surface water flux and the model surface water flux are consistent. At the M02 points (lower), the observed surface water flux and the model surface water flux are a difference of 1%. From results of subsurface flow modeling, the depth of groundwater is similar to elevation in the river and higher to the forest area. Ground water depth considering groundwater pumping is that the model values appears higher than the observed values to be within 1.5 m. From results of surface-subsurface integrated modeling, the groundwater recharge area is estimated about 90% of the model area, and the groundwater recharge rate is estimated $1.92{\times}10^5m^3/day$. From results of annual water budget analysis, the groundwater recharge rate per unit area is estimated to be 503.9 mm/year, and average annual rainfall is estimated at around 39%.

  • Continuous dry anaerobic digestion of organic solid wastes (30% TS, Total Solids) comprised of food waste and paper was performed under mesophilic condition. During the operation, hydraulic retention time (HRT) was decreased as follows: 150 d, 100 d, 60 d, and 40 d, which corresponded to the solid loading rate of 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, and 7.5 kg TS/$m^3$/d, respectively. Volumetric biogas production rate ($m^3$/$m^3$/d) increased as HRT decreased, and the highest biogas production rate of 3.49${\pm}$0.31 $m^3$/$m^3$/d was achieved at 40 d of HRT. At this HRT, high volatile solids (VS) reduction of 76% was maintained, and methane production yield of 0.25 $m^3$/kg $TS_{added}$ was achieved, indicating 67.4% conversion of organic solid waste to bioenergy. The highest biogas production yield of 0.52 $m^3$/kg $TS_{added}$ was achieved at 100 d of HRT, but it did not change much with respect to HRT. For the ease feed pumping, some amount of digester sludge was recycled and mixed with fresh feed to decrease the solid content. Recirculation volume of 5Q was found to be the optimal in this experimental condition. Specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of microorganisms at mesophilic-dry condition was 2.66, 1.94, and 1.20 mL $CH_4$/g VS/d using acetate, butyrate, and propionate as a substrate, respectively.

  • We have studied the 1.54$\mu\textrm{m}$ forward and backward stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SRS) for various $CH_4$pressures by 1.06$\mu\textrm{m}$ Q-switched Nd:YAG laser pumping under a repetition rate of Hz in single pass. We obtained that the output of backward SRS was more efficient than that of the forward SRS. The output energy and conversion efficiency of forward and backward SRS were higher than those of SBS since SRS is a steady state, but SBS is a transient state. In a $CH_4$gas uncirculating system, the output energy of the backward SRS and SBS were reduced the about 47% due to a thermal heating of $CH_4$medium in a focusing region for a repetition rate of 5 Hz. But, the output energy of forward SRS was slightly enhanced by about 8.5% due to the increase of the undepleted pump beam in the backward SRS generation. Inthe Raman half resonator using a dichromatic focusing lens, the conversion efficiency of SRS was more than 37% for a input pump laser energy of 40 mJ.

  • A new type of sand bypassing system is proposed for recovering the eroded beach in this study. This system provides an added methodology to the soft defence which is main recovery method for the coastal shore protection in the world. The study proposes a conceptional design and manufacturing procedure for the relatively small size machine of sand bypassing. In order to get the discharging volume information, the power capacity of the system is tested in the field. The discharge rate of the new system shows up to the expected maximum of 618 ton/hr which is 9.6% lower than that by theoretical calculation. It gives a resonable agreement in this system when the flow is assumed to be of the high density. In this study, the delivering volume of sand is estimated according to the discharge rate. The combination of 300 mm(12 inch) intake and 250 mm(10 inch) discharge pipe line has the pumping capacity of $103\;m^3/hr$ which is nearly the same as that of South Lake Worth Inlet sand bypassing system, Florida, U.S.A.. The proposed system added the mobility to its merit. The unit price of Florida's sand bypassing is $$8~9/m^3$ (US). The system would be economically suitable for small volume of sand because no additional equipment is necessary for the intake. The diesel fuel of 25~30 l/hr was consumed during the system operation. The multiple working system would be the next investigation target for large volume of sand.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the applicability and efficiency of water supply using hydraulic ram pump. Study area is the Imgok-ri, Hwanam-myeon, Sanju-si, Kyeongsangbuk-do. There is an abandoned coal mine, where groundwater is discharged from its entrance with a flow rate of approximately $260m^3/day$. Hydraulic ram pump uses the waterhammer phenomenon and utilizes the power of falling water for pumping part of that water to a higher elevation than the water sources without electric power. To determine the efficiency of hydraulic ram pump, the flow rate was measured at three points according to the altitude difference (${\Delta}h=19m$ (point 1), 30 m (point 2), 40 m (point 3)). Flow rate measured at 1, 2, and 3 were about $8.6{\sim}10.8m^3/day$, $3.98{\sim}4.39m^3/day$, and $2.35{\sim}2.59m^3/day$, respectively. The current results suggested that, hydraulic ram pump could be applicable for the water supply system in mountain areas without external power supply.

  • In a supersonic turbine, A rotor overlap technique reduced the chance of chocking in the rotor passage, and made the design pressure ratio satisfied. However, the technique also made additional losses, like a pumping loss, expansion loss, etc. Therefore, an approximate optimization technique was appled to find the optimal shape of overlap which maximizes the improvement of the turbine performance. The design variables were shape factors of a rotor overlap. An optimal design for rotor overlap reduces leakage mass flow rate at tip clearance by about 50% and increases about 4% of total-static efficiency compared with the base model. It was found that the most effective design variable is the tip overlap and that the hub overlap size is the lowest.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate performance of geothermal heat exchanger (GHE) in the combined well and open-closed loops geothermal (CWG) systems. The CWG systems were designed to combine open loop geothermal heat pumps and closed loop geothermal heat pumps for high energy efficiency. GHE of the CWG systems could be installed at pumping wells for agricultural usage. To get optimal heat exchange capacity of GHE of the CWG systems, 4 GHEs with various materials and apertures were tested at laboratory scale. Polyethylene (PE) and stainless steel (STS) were selected as GHE materials. The maximum heat exchange capacity of GHEs were estimated to be in the range of 33.0~104 kcal/min. The heat exchange capacity of STS GHEs was 2.4~3.2 times higher than that of PE GHE. The optimal cross section area of GHE and flow rate of circulating water of GHE were estimated to be $2,500mm^2$ and 113 L/min, respectively. For more complicated GHE of the CWG systems, it is necessary to evaluate GHEs at various scales.

  • Groundwater flow in confined aquifer and heat transport in underground geologic media are using same governing equation(line source) like well fuction. Therefore the conventional slope method using only later data obtained from in-situ thermal response test to determine the thermal conductivity of vertical geothermal heat exchanger(GHEX) is basically identical with one of Theis straight line method of aquifer test under artesian condition. In case that the pumping rate(Q, $m^3$/d) and drawdown(s,m) which are used for input data of existing hydrogeologic computer programs for aquifer test are replaced and converted to supplying heat energy per unit length of bore hole(Q/L,w/m or Kcal/h.m) and temperatures (T,$^{\circ}C$)measured at in and out-let of GHEX as in put data respectively, thermal conductivity around geothermal heat exchanger can be easily estimated without any special modification of the existing hydrogeologic computer program. Two numbers of time series temperature variation data obtained from in situ geothermal response test are analized using Theismethods(standard curve and straight line method) by using existing aquifer test program and conventional Slope method proposed by ASHRAE. The results show that thermal conductivity values estimated by two straight methods are identical and the difference of estimated values between standard curve methods and Slope method are also within acceptable ranges. In general, the thermal conductivity estimated from Theis straight linemethod gives more accurate value than the one of Slope method due to that Slope method uses only visual matching otherwise Theis method uses automatic curve matching estimation with reducing RSS.

  • Lindera obtusiloba has been widely used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of lots of diseases, including abdominal pain, bruise, and hepatocirrhosis. Here in this study, we elucidated the lifespan-extending effect of methanolic extract of Lindera obtusiloba (MLO) using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. We found that MLO has potent lifespan extension activities under normal culture condition. Then, we determined the protective effects of MLO on the stress conditions such as osmotic, thermal and oxidative stress. To reveal possible mechanism of MLO-mediated lifespan, we further investigated the effect of MLO on the antioxidant enzyme activities and intracellular ROS levels. Our results demonstrated that superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were significantly up-regulated by MLO treatment, resulted in reduced intracellular ROS levels. In this work, we also tested whether MLO-mediated longevity activity was associated with aging-related factors such as food intake and growth. Our data revealed that both of pharyngeal pumping rate and body length were significantly shifted by MLO treatment, indicating these factors were involved in MLO's lifespan-extension effects. Although MLO induces reduction in food intake, the body movement of MLO-fed aged worms was not decreased, compared to untreated control worms, indicating MLO might extend lifespan without affecting healthspan.
