A series of hydraulic and cavitation tests are performed in water environment in order to verify the hydraulic and cavitation performance of three types of LOX pumps. All the performances of the pumps are found to be satisfied with each design requirement. In the hydraulic tests, the head and efficiency are increased as the gap between floating ring seals and the impeller shoulder is decreased. In the cavitation tests, some pumps show decrease in the cavitation performance as the flowrate of the pump is decreased.

In the present study, degradation characteristics of pumps in nuclear power plants were investigated to provide the information of degradation mechanism and stressors. The failure records of pumps for the periods 2000 to 2006 on INPO(Institute of Nuclear Power Operations) EPIX(Equipment Performance and Information Exchange System) DB were reviewed. The 1,834 failure records reveal that the critical areas of pump failures are bearing, mechanical seal, gasket/o-ring, shaft, impeller, coupling and packing. Based on the failure rate of critical areas, the important degradation mechanism and stressors were determined. Additionally, the relationship between degradation mechanism and stressors such as wear was examined. Finally, the monitoring parameters related to degradation and stressors were discussed for the future development of degradation evaluation and prognosis technology of pumps.
Pressure relief valve (PRV) is one of the important control valves used in nuclear power plants, and its sealing performance is crucial to ensure the safety and function of the entire pressure system. For the sealing performance improving purpose, an explicit function that accounts for all design parameters and can accurately describe the relationship between the multi-design parameters and the seal performance is essential, which is also the challenge of the valve seal design and/or optimization work. On this basis, a surrogate model-based design optimization is carried out in this paper. To obtain the basic data required by the surrogate model, both the Finite Element Model (FEM) and the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based numerical models were successively established, and thereby both the contact stresses of valve static sealing and dynamic impact (between valve disk and nozzle) could be predicted. With these basic data, the polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) surrogate model which can not only be used for inputs-outputs relationship construction, but also produce the sensitivity of different design parameters were developed. Based on the PCE surrogate model, a new design scheme was obtained after optimization, in which the valve sealing stress is increased by 24.42% while keeping the maximum impact stress lower than 90% of the material allowable stress. The result confirms the ability and feasibility of the method proposed in this paper, and should also be suitable for performance design optimizations of control valves with similar structures.
The intracardiac axial flow pump has been developed This device has several advantages: it fits well anatomically, its blood-contacting surface is small, and it is implanted as easily as an artificial heart valve replacement. The axial flow pump consists of an impeller and a motor, both of which are encased in a housing. Two types of impeller with 4 vanes and 6 vanes are used. Sealing of the motor shaft is achieved by means of a ferrofluidic seal. A flow of 5$\ell$/min was obtained at a differential pressure of 100mmHg with a motor speed of 7091rpm with the 4-vane impeller and 6402rpm with the 6-vane impeller. Sealing was kept against a pressure of 150mmHg at 7000rpm with the 4-vane impeller and 6402rpm with the 6-vane impeller. Sealing was kept against a pressure of 150mmHg at 7000rpm over 24 hours. The index of hemolysis was 0.056 with the 4-vane impeller and 0.214 with the 6-vane impeller. The intracardiac axial flow pump is a very promising circulatory support.
A getter pump test system is being developed as a core item of the national project for establishing the foundation of the vacuum technology in our country. A preliminary test system was prepared for developing the getter test procedure, and providing design requirements and system specifications before setting up the getter pump test system. The pumping speed and the pumping capacity of getter elements of low activation temperature used in the seal-off vacuum devices, for the hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen gases, were measured using the preliminary test system. The pumping characteristics of a domestic getter, developed mainly for the gas purifier, were compared with those of a foreign getter used widely in the lamp factories.

The hydraulic performance analysis of an entire pump system composed of an inducer, impeller, volute and seal for the application on turbopumps is performed using three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations. A quasi-steady mixing-plane method is used on the impeller/volute interface to simulate the unsteady interaction phenomena. From this wort the effects of each component on the pump performance are investigated at design and off-design conditions through the analysis of flow structures and loss mechanisms. The computational results are in a good agreement with experimental ones in terms of the headrise and efficiency even though very complex flow structures are present. It is found that the asymmetric pressure distribution along the volute wall constitutes the main reason of the difference between experimental and computational results due to the limitation of the applying the quasi-steady method. Since the volute was found to be over-designed according to the pressure distribution of the volute wall, redesign of the volute has been performed resulting in an improved performance characteristic.

In this study, the impact on the circulating water system has been analyzed due to an installation of helical turbine to develop hydro-kinetic energy at the discharge channel of the power plant. Numerical simulations of velocity and pressure variations have been performed when one set of $3.6\;m\;{\times}\;1.5\;m$ sized helical turbine is installed at the outlet of discharge culvert. In case of mean sea level, change of downstream water surface elevation does not affect upstream elevation of the weir because its propagation is blocked by the seal well weir. However in case of highest high water level, change of downstream elevation affects upstream elevation because flow pattern in discharge culvert becomes the full pipe flow with submerged weir. Although an unstable pressure change occurs in upstream of the weir during the intial 10 minutes after beginning of the discharge, it becomes stable after that time. In addition, a rise of water surface elevation by 0.2 m is observed but it is concluded that it hardly affects the safety of circulating water pump (CWP) although its required power is increased more or less. Therefore, the increase of required power of CWP needs to be considered for evaluation of the helical turbine applicability.

The effects of an impeller and floating ring seals on the performance of centrifugal pumps are investigated on the basis of their test results using water. The pumps are single-staged centrifugal pumps developed for 30-ton- and 75-ton-class liquid rocket engines, and are components of a turbopump that supplies propellants (liquid oxidizer and kerosene) to the combustion chamber. The exit width of the impellers and the numbers and exit angles of the impeller blades are found to have influences on the pump heads. In addition, the pumps have different efficiencies according to the gaps between the floating ring seals and the impellers, whereas the pump size seems to have less effect on the efficiency.

The friction and wear properties of ceramics are very important in the applications to engineering ceramic parts such as seal rings, pump parts, automobile meter parts, and so on. In this study, the effects of each other purity on the mechanical and tribological properties of purity zirconia ceramics were investigated. Also in order to determine the effects of sliding distance, sliding speed, contact load, friction coefficient, the amount of worn out material at a certain time, and the prepared composites were measured. Crystalline phases and microstructure were examined with XRD and SEM. The results show that we obtained the good properties of friction coefficient and wear resistance at the purity 99.5% of zirconia. than this of the purity 95% were great at the wear amount of worn out material.
