  • Variable displacement vane-type oil pumps represent one of the most innovative pump types for industrial applications, especially for engine lubrication systems. This paper deals with a modeling method for theoretical flow rate investigation of a typical variable displacement vane-type oil pump. This theoretical model is based on the pump geometric design and dynamic analyses. It can be considered as mandatory steps for a deeper understanding of the pump operation as well as for effectively implementing the pump control mechanisms to satisfy the urgent demands of engine lubrication systems. The developed pump model is finally illustrated by numerical simulations.

  • A CFD code was developed to investigate the inception of cavitation around impeller blades of centrifugal fuel pump using two dimensional cascade modeling. With the verification test for numerical validity of the developed code, the prediction of the onset of cavitation was made for the configuration of a newly designed KHP fuel pump. The calculation results show impeller design was free of cavitation if the pump operates within the operational temperature and rotational speed range. However, the cavitation would be relatively easy to occur at off design region of fuel pump where the rotational speed is higher than design limit. Specially, the onset of cavitation is sensitively dependent on the increase in fuel temperature while the decrease in temperature will reduce the possibility of cavitation inception in the pump.

  • Variable displacement vane-type oil pumps represent one of the most innovative pump types for industrial applications, especially for engine lubrication systems. This paper presents a complete and accurate mathematical model for a typical variable displacement vane-type oil pump. Firstly, its theoretical model is revised. Secondly, an analysis of power loss factors of this pump type is carefully investigated to optimize the modeling accuracy. Finally, the estimated pump performance using the complete pump model is verified by numerical simulations in comparison with the practical tests.

  • The dynamic characteristics of both raw-water source and air source heat pump utilized in water treatment facilities were investigated by using TRNSYS simulator. The modeling of the raw water source heat pump was verified by the measured data at the Cheongju water treatment facility, and the modeling at the air source heat pump was verified by the data from the Siheung water treatment facility. The average heating and cooling COPs from the raw-water source heat pump were higher than those of the air source heat pump by 19% and 18%, respectively. The power consumptions of the air source heat pump for the cooling and the heating were higher than those of the raw water source heat pump by 28% and 26%, respectively.

  • According to the recent increase of demands for multi-function and economics on hydraulic excavator, it is required that excavator should have simple operation, higher and operational efficiency, however the modeling of engine/pump system of excavator is not prescribed by the paper. So, in this paper the modeling of engine/pump system of excavator is suggested by identification method from step response and verified effectiveness of identification system by comparing with experimental results which was conducted using PID controller. To improve the problem of parameter variation and modeling error in the system, sliding mode control was introduced and new switching surface was designed. This control algorithm was applied to a hydraulic excavator by simulation, and its effectiveness was verified, and the results of variable structure system for the excavator system using a output component was compared with that of full state feedback when load disturbances and system paramenter variation exist.

  • A critical speed analysis of a pump shaft has been investigated. Among various methods in the shaft critical speed calculation, a transfer matrix method has been examined in this research. After a brief review on the transfer matrix method, a modeling procedure for a continuous structure has been discussed. Then, a critical speed of a multistage pump shaft has been estimated up to several low modes. Throughout an analysis, parametric effects on the bearing stiffness, a degree of the modeling order, and attachmant of the impeller have been investigated. As an application example, a critical speed analysis of a verical pump which has been implemented in domestic electric power plants for cooling water circulation has been conducted in order to provide a safe operation as far as a pump vibration is concerned.

  • A mathematical model is suggested for diagnosis on a reciprocating pump. To the end, kinematic, thermodynamic and fluidic analyses are carried out for a simplified reciprocating pump model. The pressure inside the cylinder is expressed as a function of the rotation angle of a crank axle. The mathematical model consists of one cylinder with suction and discharge valves and an accumulator. The effect of valve leakage on the discharge angle is investigated. The discharge angle difference between normal state and leakage state increases with the leakage extent.

  • The present study has been conducted to simulate dynamics of a gas engine-driven heat pump (GHP) for design of control algorithm. The dynamics modeling of a GHP was based on conservation laws of mass and energy. For automatic control of refrigerant pressures, actuators such as engine speed, outdoor fans, coolant three-way valves and liquid injection valves were PI or P controlled. The simulation results were found to be realistic enough to apply for control algorithm design. The model can be applied to build a virtual real-time GHP system so that it interfaces with a real controller in purpose of prototyping control algorithm.

  • This study addresses the modeling of a bi-directional outlet variable swash plate type axial piston pump with two EPPR valves and an analysis of the response characteristics to the angle control of that pump. In this paper, the combination of the EPPR valve and double rod type piston is referred to as the EPPR regulator. The EPPR regulator is compact and inexpensive, and has good responsiveness. Under actual pump operating conditions, because of the various external conditions of the pump, inertia is applied to the swash plate, generating the tilting torque. Also, the tilting torque can delay or shorten the response characteristics of the regulator. So we validated them through the analysis using SimulationX and these results allow users to freely integrate the EPPR regulator into the desired system.
