  • This paper describes the adherence phenomenon, including the tribological characteristics, of a low-pressure fuel pump in a diesel engine for an excavator. Most fuel pumps of a diesel-engine excavator are of the fixed-quantity-gear type and have low pressure. However, the developed pumps develop problems in the pumping system owing to performance instability. Cavitation, which is the main obstacle to stable driving in the pump, occurs between an idle gear and the housing to produce a serious adherence problem. The present study not only examined how to suppress cavitation in a pump but also developed a simple method to improve pump performance through the early creation of a lubrication film with a phosphoric acid coating on the surface of the idle gear. The results showed that the coating successfully prevents breakage of the idle gear due to adherence.

초고속 용사 적용 고속 초고압 왕복동 펌프 플런저의 내구성 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Characteristics of Durability for Plunger of High Speed and Ultra-High Pressure Reciprocating Pump Using High Velocity Oxygen Fuel Spraying)

  • The high velocity oxygen fuel spraying (HVOF) is a kind of surface modification process technology to form the sprayed coating layer after spraying the powder to molten or semi-molten state by the ultra-high speed at the high-temperature heat source and conflicting with a substrate. It is desirable to melt completely the thermal spray powder in order to produce the coating layer with an optimal adhesion, however, because a semi-molten powder in a spray process has the low efficiency and become a factor that degrades the mechanical property by the inducement of pore-forming within the coating layer. To improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and heat resistance, in this study, the plungers of high-speed and ultra-high pressure reciprocating hydraulic pumps for oil and water used in ironwork are produced with $420J_2$ and the coating layers of plungers are formed by the powders of WC-Co-Cr and WC-Cr-Ni including the high hardness WC. The surface of these plungers is modified by the super-mirror face grinding machine using variable air pressure developed in this laboratory, and then the characteristics of cross-sectional microstructure, and surface roughness and hardness values between no operation and 100 days-operation are examined and made a comparison. The fine tops and bottoms on surface roughness curve of oil-hydraulic pump plunger sprayed by WC-Cr-Ni are molded more and higher than those of water-hydraulic pump sprayed by WC-Co-Cr because the plunger diameter of oil-hydraulic pump is 0.4 times smaller than that of water-hydraulic pump and the pressure of oil-hydraulic pump exerted on the plunger is operated with the 70 bars higher than that of water-hydraulic pump. As a result, it is found that the values of centerline average surface roughness and maximum height for oil-hydraulic pump plunger are bigger than those of water-hydraulic pump plunger.

  • Oil hydraulic piston pumps are being extensively used around the world, because of their simple design, light weight, effective cost, etc. An oil hydraulic pump is likely to have the serious problems of high leakage, friction, and low energy efficiency after a long period of use. In an oil hydraulic piston pump, the clearance between the valve block and piston plays an important role for volumetric and overall efficiency. In this study, the wear property of the SACM645 material with DLC coating used for a hydraulic piston pump was determined by experimentation with variable heat treatment. To investigate the effect according to the piston surface condition, five different types of specimens were prepared. The maximum tensile strengths of the QT and QT Nitration specimens had similar values of about 800 MPa, but the strains indicated a big difference. In a wear test, the wear characteristic of the DLC coating specimen was shown to be excellent. The QT, QT + IH, QT + Nitration, and matirx specimen showed similar wear characteristics. In the case of a dry condition without oil, the DLC coating specimen had good wear resistance, with no wear shown.

Improvement of the Low-Speed Friction Characteristics of a Hydraulic Piston Pump by PVD-Coating of TiN

  • The hydraulic pump of an Electro-hydrostatic Actuator should be able to quickly feed large volume of oil into hydraulic cylinder in order to reduce the response time. On the other hand, it should be also able to precisely dispense small amount of oil through low-speed operation so that the steady state position control error of the actuator can be accurately compensated. Within the scope of axial piston type hydraulic pumps, this paper is focused on the investigation how the surface treatment of their cylinder barrel with TiN plasma coating can contribute to the reduction of the friction and wear rate of valve plate in the low-speed range with mixed lubrication. The results showed that the friction torque of the valve plate mated with a TiN coated cylinder barrel could be reduced to 22% of that with an uncoated original one when load pressure was 300 bar and rotational speed 100 rpm. It means that the torque efficiency of the test pump was expected to increase more than 1.3% under the same working condition. At the same time, the wear rate of the valve plate could be reduced to $40\sim50%$.

EHA 유압펌프 부품의 플라즈마 질화기술 적용에 관한 연구 (A study for Application of ion Nitriding on EHA Hydraulic Pump Parts)

  • In this study, ion nitriding of a EHA pump part made of AISI 4340 steel was performed under different applied power conditions to study the relationship between dimensional changes of specimens and the type of applied power source. Microstructures and micohardness distribution at different processing conditions were also examined. Duplex surface treatment of ion nitriding with the optimum process conditions to produce the minimum dimensional variation in a EHA pump part and a TiN thin film coating by unbalanced magnetron sputtering was performed and the specimens with a duplex surface treatment were subjected to a high speed wear test to evaluate the wear performance of EHA hydraulic pump parts with various surface treatment conditions. Results indicated that uniform and continuous surface layer with a minimum dimensional variation could be obtained by ion nitriding with bipolar mode power source and much enhanced wear characteristics with a duplex surface treatment could be obtained, compared with results from ion nitriding or single-layerd TiN coating specimens.

  • This paper details application of a DLC(Diamond Like Carbon)-coating to the swash plate and the ball joint of pistons that make sliding contact with the piston shoes of an axial piston pump. This process, aimed to reduce the frictional and leakage power losses of the hydrostatic piston shoe bearings at the low speed range. At lower speeds than 100rpm, the positive effects of the DLC-coating on the power loss reduction of the hydrostatic piston shoe bearings could be confirmed. These effects resulted in little improvement in volumetric efficiency of the test pump, but the mechanical efficiency could be raised by up to 5% at 100rpm; here, the DLC-coated swash plate played a more dominant role than the DLC-coated ball joint.

  • Injection molded thermoplastic parts may need to be coated to facilitate paint adhesion, or to satisfy other surface property requirements, such as appearance, durability, and weather resistance. In this paper, a two-component polyurethane metering system was developed for the simultaneous injection and surface coating of a plastic substrate. The system was composed of storage tanks, feed pumps, axial piston pumps, mixing head. The tank was designed to be double-jacket structured and fabricated for polyol and isocyanate, respectively. A temperature chamber was used to maintain the material temperature to be $80^{\circ}C$ during flowing from storage tank to mixing head. Inside the chamber, feed pump, low pressure filter, high pressure pump, high pressure filter, pressure sensor, flow meter were installed. A mixing head of L-type was used for homogeneous mixing of polyol and isocyanate. Inside the mixing head, a cartridge heater and a temperature sensor were installed to control the temperature of the materials. The flow rate of axial-piston pump was controlled by using closed-loop feedback control algorithm. The input flow-rates were compared with the measured values. The output error was 6.7% for open-loop control, whereas the error was below 2.2% for closed-loop control. In addition, the pressure generated through mixing-head nozzle increased with increasing flow rate. It was found that the pressure drop between metering pump and mixing-head nozzle was almost 10 bar.

Hydraulic performance and flow resistance tests of various hydraulic parts for optimal design of a reactor coolant pump for a small modular reactor

  • Hydraulic performance and flow resistance tests were performed to confirm the main parameters of the hydraulic instrumentation that can affect the pump performance of the reactor coolant pump. The flow resistance test offers important experimental data, which are necessary to predict the behavior of the primary coolant when the circulation of the reactor coolant pump is stopped. Moreover, the shape of the hydraulic section of the pump, which was considered in the test, was prepared to compare the mixed-flow- and axial-flow-type models, the difference in the number of blades of the impeller and diffuser, the difference in the shape of the impeller blade and its thickness, and the effect of coating at the suction bell. Additionally, five models of the hydraulic part were manufactured for the experiments. In this study, the differences in performance owing to the design factors were confirmed through the experimental results.

  • The hydraulic pump for a Electro-hydrostatic Actuator for aircrafts should be able to quickly feed large volume of oil into hydraulic cylinder in order to reduce the response time. On the other hand, it should be also able to precisely dispense small amount of oil by low-speed operation so that the steady state position control error of the EHA can be accurately compensated. This paper is focused on the investigation how the plasma coating surface treatment of cylinder barrel with CrSiN can contribute to the reduction of low-speed friction torque of a bent-axis type piston pump. The results showed that the reduction of the friction torque was not remarkable, but that the anti-wear characteristics of the CrSiN-coated cylinder barrel were much better that those of the original one.
