  • The natural frequencies of the support system for a vertical pump, which are a key factor affecting the dynamic stability of the pump support system, are not easily predictable with analytical approaches only, due to the difficulties estimating the effective stiffness of the connections between the concrete base, the motor structure, the discharge elbow and the suction column of the pump system. This paper presents the results of a finite element analysis and an experimental study performed to identify and modify the characteristics of the pumping structure. The difficulties of modelling the effective stiffness were overcome by utilizing experimental results in the analysis. Based on analytical and experimental results, appropriate structural modifications are taken to reduce excessive vibration of the pump system to a satisfactory level.

  • In this study, a variable displacement swash plate pump supplying high-pressure hydraulic oil to control the hydraulic system of a marine engine was developed. A structural analysis was performed on the main parts of the pump to ensure the structural safety in the design. Using a pump testing equipment, performance characteristics such as no-load flow rate, load flow rate, flow rate according to the swivel angle change, flow rate with lubrication orifice, and response time according to the swivel motion were tested. Consequently, the pump was confirmed to satisfy the required specifications.

  • Performance of water-to-air heat pump using raw water has been analyzed under part load heating operation in March, 2010. The water source heat pump of 30 RT was installed for 24 hours cooling and heating ventilation, and the gravity inflow water from Daechung dam is used as the heat source. The daily averaged water and air temperatures are $5.7^{\circ}C$ and $9.9^{\circ}C$ respectively, and the heat pump is operated under part load condition for 7.5 hours in 24 hours. The daily averaged heat pump COP calculated with heat transferred from the brine water is 2.49 and the monthly averaged COP is 2.25 in March. Based on the database of the California Energy Commission, the monthly averaged COPs of air source heat pumps installed in U.S.A. are 1.97 in March and 2.03 in April. Therefore it is confirmed again that the performance of the heat pump using raw water is better than that of air source heat pumps.

  • An electric vehicle is an environment-friendly automobile which does not emit any tailpipe pollutant. In a conventional vehicle with an internal combustion engine, the internal cabin of the vehicle is usually heated using waste heat from the engine. However, for an electric vehicle, an alternative solution for heating is required because it does not have a combustion engine. Recently, a heat pump system which is widely used for residential heating due to its higher efficiency has been studied for its use as a heating system in electric vehicles. In this study, a heat pump system utilizing air source and waste heat source from electric devices was investigated experimentally. The performance of the heat pump system was measured by varying the mass flow rate ratio. The experimental results show that the heating capacity and COP in the dual heat source heat pump were increased by 20.9% and 8.6%, respectively, from those of the air-source heat pump.

  • This paper focuses on the single stage and multistage performance characteristics of centrifugal mixed flow submersible borewell pump. This study reveals that the performance of single stage pump is higher than that of multistage pumps. The head, input power and efficiency of single stage pump are higher than the per stage head, per stage input power and efficiency of multistage pumps. This study is divided into three parts. In the first part, five prototype pumps were made in single stage and multistage construction and the performance tests were conducted. In the second part, numerical validation has been done for different turbulence models and grid sizes. k-Omega SST model has been selected for the performance simulation and was validated with the performance of the test pump with static pressure tappings. In the third part, single and three stage pump performance were simulated numerically and compared with experimental results. The detailed analysis of pressure and velocity distributions reveals the difference in performance of single and three stage pump, due to non-uniform flow and difference in averaged flow velocities at the subsequent impeller inlets except the 1st stage impeller inlet.

  • The flow instability in a low specific speed mixed-flow pump, having a positive slope of head-flow characteristics was investigated. Based on the static pressure measurements, it was found that a rotating stall in the vaned diffuser occurs at about 65% flow rate of best efficiency point (BEP). A dynamic Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) measurement and the numerical simulations were conducted in order to investigate the flow fields. As a result, the diffuser rotating stall was simulated even by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the calculated periodic flow patterns agree well with the measured ones by DPIV. It is clarified that a periodical large scaled backflow, generated at the leading edge of the suction surface of the diffuser vane, causes the instability. Furthermore, the growth of the strong vortex at the leading edge of the diffuser vane induces the strong backflow from the diffuser outlet to the inlet. The scale of one stall cell is covered over four-passages in total thirteen vane-passages.

  • Using superconducting magnetic flux pump, thick power leads for a superconducting magnet could be replaced with thin string leads for the excitation magnet to the superconducting flux pump. We have developed a new type flux pump with high voltage output to shorten the charge and discharge time of the load magnet. The test of four stacked disks as the excither for the load magnet has been carried out. This disk type flux pump yielded 70 mV of voltage across its terminal and 10 A of current through 85 mH load magnet which was the field winding of 20 kVA class fully superconducting generator within 12 seconds. This output voltage of the new superconducting flux pump is about 10 times larger than that of the previous work Moreover since it is easy to stack the disks for the superconduction flux pump, the high voltage exciter for the 1H class superconducting magnet would be expected to be made easily.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the experimental performance characteristics of a water-to-water geothermal heat pump featuring a vapor refrigerant injection for the production of hot water. The performance of geothermal heat pump with a vapor injection was evaluated by comparing with that of a conventional geothermal heat pump without a vapor injection. For heating operation, the geothermal heat pump with a vapor injection is superior in COP and heating capacity. The vapor injection was more effective for supplying hot water while overloading. The vapor injection was effective for the improvement of the cooling capacity. However, the vapor injection was not effective for the increasing of COP according to the increased input of a compressor. The advantage of vapor injection in water-to-water geothermal heat pump become disappeared while cooling operation with lower part loading.

  • The greenhouse heating system with heat pump was built for development of simulation model and validation. The computer simulation model for the system to predict temperature of air and soil and moisture content of soil in the greenhouse were developed, and its validity was justified by actual data. From the analysis of experimentally measured data and the simulation output, following results were obtained. 1. The expected values of inside air temperature for the heating system with heat pump were very much close to the experimental values. 2. In the heating system with heat pump, the expected values of day time surface temperature of soil by computer simulation were very much similar to the measured values, but those of night time were higher than the measured value by at most 2.0$\^{C}$. 3. The simulation model predicted temperature of greenhouse film as of 1$\^{C}$ below than the mean value of ambient air and greenhouse air temperature. 4. Heat loss value of daytime was found to be larger than that of nigh as much as 1.3 to 2.3 times for the heating system with heat pump. 5. In the heating system with heat pump, when the lowest ambient temperature was -8$\^{C}$∼-7$\^{C}$ the air temperature of greenhouse was 5$\^{C}$∼6$\^{C}$, thus the heat pump heating system contributed in greenhouse heating by 13$\^{C}$.

  • The development of efficient systems for water quality improvement for water sources such as lakes, dams and reservoirs has become a necessity to provide not only a cleaner and safer water to the urban society, but also to provide a cleaner and safer environment for the aquatic organisms living in lakes, dams and reservoirs. This study concentrates on the outlet design and internal flow analysis of an axial flow pump used in a floating type water treatment system completely powered by renewable energy source. The treatment system is designed to raise water from depths of about 3~5m up to the water surface where it is naturally mixed with air as it is released back to the reservoir. The outlet of a typical axial flow pump is modified to suit the floating type water mixer. The performance of the axial flow pump is studied by investigating the internal flow of the system. Results show that the change in outlet shape does not alter the performance of the original pump at the maximum efficiency point as long as the cross sectional area of inlet is the same as the outlet. The axial pump for floating type water treatment system has good cavitation performance in the whole flow passage.
