  • A new convenient magnet array module is designed to investigate effects of magnetic field array on magnetron discharge characteristics. Magnetic field analysis showed good agreement of measured discharge region by a CCD device which has a high quantum efficiency over visible wavelength range. OES (optical emission spectroscopy) showed major emission peaks are from electronic transitions in 400 nm range and 800 nm range. Effects of driving voltage characteristics were analyzed in a point of electron drift trajectories and ionizing collision frequencies. Pulsed dc with a fast rising and falling time was analyzed to have potential to increase ionization collisions by putting a burst of hot electrons and to raise sheath potential. From measured voltage and current waveform, maximum of -1000 V peak was generated with $-400\;V_{rms}$ conditions. Possibility of a properly designed magnetron cathode was shown to be used as a melting device. Cu was successfully melted with power density of a several tens of $W/cm^2$.

  • A ferroelectric $(Bi,La)_4Ti_3O_{12}$ (BLT) thin film fabricated by the pulsed-DC sputtering method was evaluated on a cell structure to check its compatibility to high density ferroelectric random access memory (FeRAM) devices. The BLT composition in the sputtering target was $Bi_{4.8}La_{1.0}Ti_{3.0}O_{12}$. Firstly, a BLT film was deposited on a buried Pt/$IrO_x$/Ir bottom electrode stack with W-plug connected to the transistor in a lower place. Then, the film was finally crystallized at $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 seconds in oxygen ambient. The annealed BLT layer was found to have randomly oriented and small ellipsoidal-shaped grains (long direction: ~100 nm, short direction: ~20 nm). The small and uniform-sized grains with random orientations were considered to be suitable for high density FeRAM devices.

  • This paper focuses on the control of bidirectional power flow in the electric shipboard power systems, especially in the Medium-Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) shipboard power system. Bidirectional power control between the main MVDC bus and the local zones can improve the energy efficiency and control flexibility of electric ship systems. However, since the MVDC system contains various nonlinear loads such as pulsed power load and radar in various subsystems, the voltage of the MVDC and the local zones varies significantly. This voltage variation affects the control performance of the bidirectional DC-DC converters as exogenous disturbances. To improve the control performance regardless of uncertainties and disturbances, this paper proposes a novel controller design method of the bidirectional DC-DC converters using $L_1$ control theory and intelligent optimization algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is verified via large-scale real-time digital simulation of a notional shipboard MVDC power system.

  • This study reports a fabrication of $TiO_2$ on the surface of dental implants by pulsed d.c. magnetron sputtering from a Ti target. A systematic investigation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of $TiO_2$ films was carried out with the variation of $O_2$ contents and substrate temperatures. The effects of deposition parameters on the fabricated structures were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Hydrophilic properties were evaluated by measuring water contact angles on the film surface. With increasing $O_2$ contents up to 40%, surface roughness of $TiO_2$ film increased while relatively smooth surface was obtained with 50% $O_2$ contents. Surface roughness and adhesion strength both increased as substrate temperature increased up to $200^{\circ}C$. From these results, hydrophilic and adhesive properties of the present $TiO_2$ films synthesized with 40% $O_2$ at $200^{\circ}C$ are regarded to be suitable for bio-compatible applications.

  • The majority of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients have a poor prognosis with current therapies, and new approaches are urgently needed. We have developed a novel therapeutic cancer vaccine platform based on tumor cell derived autophagosomes (DRibbles) for cancer immunotherapy. We here evaluated the effectiveness of DRibbles-pulsed dendritic cell (DC) immunization to induce anti-tumor immunity in BALB/c mouse HCC and humanized HCC mouse models generated by transplantation of human HCC cells (HepG2) into BALB/c-nu mice. DRibbles were enriched from H22 or BNL cells, BALB/c-derived HCC cell lines, by inducing autophagy and blocking protein degradation. DRibbles-pulsed DC immunization induced a specific T cell response against HCC and resulted in significant inhibition of tumor growth compared to mice treated with DCs alone. Antitumor efficacy of the DCs-DRibbles vaccine was also demonstrated in a humanized HCC mouse model. The results indicated that HCC/DRibbles-pulsed DCs immunotherapy might be useful for suppressing the growth of residual tumors after primary therapy of human HCC.

  • Background: Immunization of dendritic cells (DCs) pulsed with tumor antigen can activate tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) that are responsible for protection and regression. In this study, we examined whether the uptake of necrotic tumor cells could modulate DC phenotypes and whether the immunization of necrotic tumor cell-loaded DCs could elicit efficient tumor specific immune responses followed by a regression of established tumor burdens. Methods: We prepared necrotic tumor cell-pulsed DCs for the therapeutic vaccination and investigated their phenotypic characteristics, the immune responses induced by these DCs, and therapeutic vaccine efficacy against colon carcinoma in vivo. Several parameters including phagocytosis of tumor cells, surface antigen expression, chemokine receptor expression, IL-12 production, and NK as well as CTL activation were assessed to characterize the immune response. Results: DCs derived from mouse bone marrow efficiently phagocytosed necrotic tumor cells and after the uptake, they produced remarkably increased levels of IL-12. A decreased CCR1 and increased CCR7 expression on DCs was also observed after the tumor uptake, suggesting that antigen uptake could induce DC maturation. Furthermore, co-culturing of DCs with NK cells in vitro enhanced IL-12 production in DCs and IFN-${\gamma}$ production in NK cells, which was significantly dependent on IL-12 production and cell-to-cell contact. Immunization of necrotic tumor cell-loaded DCs induced cytotoxic T lymphocytes as well as NK activation, and protected mice against subsequent tumor challenge. In addition, intratumoral or contra-lateral immunization of these DCs not only inhibited the growth of established tumors, but also eradicated tumors in more than 60% of tumor-bearing mice. Conclusion: Our data indicate that production of IL-12, chemokine receptor expression and NK as well as CTL activation may serve as major parameters in assessing the effect of tumor cell-pulsed DC vaccine. Therefore, DCs loaded with necrotic tumor cells offer a rational strategy to treat tumors and eventually lead to prolonged survival.

  • We measured the temperature of target surface inducing by various physical phenomenon on magnetron sputtering target and confirmed the possibilities if the temperature distribution could affect plasma and deposited thin film. The target of magnetron sputtering has two types: round type and rectangular type. In a rectangular target, the concentrated discharge area by corner effect by magnetic field and non-uniform erosion of target are generated. And we found the generation of non-uniform temperature distribution on the target surface from this. This area was $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ higher than non-sputtering area. And if particles are generated during sputtering process, they were $20^{\circ}C$ higher than the area where is higher than non-sputtering area. These effects result in non-uniformity of thin films, crack of ceramic target, and shortening target life by non-uniform erosion.

  • Tantalum oxide has been extensively investigated as one of the promising Resistive switching materials applicable to Resistive Dynamic Access Memories. Impedance spectroscopy offers simultaneous measurements of electrical and dielectric information, separation of electrical origins among bulk, grain boundaries, and interfaces, and the monitoring of electrical components. Such benefits have been combined with the resistive states of resistive switching devices which can be described in terms of equivalent circuits involving resistors, capacitors, and inductors, The current work employed pulsed laser deposition in order to prepare the oxygen-deficient tantalum oxide. The fabricated devices were controlled between highresistance and low-resistance states in controlled current compliance modes. The corresponding electrical phenomena were monitored both in the dc-based current-voltage characteristics and in the ac-based impedance spectroscopy. The origins of the electrical switching are discussed towards optimized ReRAM devices in terms of interfacial effects.
