  • In this paper, a predistorter is presented for the orthogonal frequency division multiplxing (OFDM) systems with a transmit raised cosine (RC) pulse shaping filter and a high power amplifier (HPA). By exploiting zero-intersymbol interference (ISI) nature of the RC filter, the proposed predistorter placed before the filter only utilizes memoryless nonlinearity of the HPA, not the overall nonlinearity with memory induced by a combination of the filter and HPA. The predistirtion is realized upon fixed point iteration on OFDM symbols. Simulation results show that the proposed predisorter can be effectively employed to achieve significant performance improvement.

  • X-ray or ${\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy systems are widely used for analyzing material characteristics. Pile-up pulses are very often encountered for several reasons in XRF systems. Thus, it is necessary to reject or recover pile-up pulses to accurately analyze the material under test. In this paper, a pile up pulse rejection and recovery method is presented for XRF systems using trapezoidal pulse shaping of the input signals. Since the proposed method is based on the trapezoidal pulse shaping method widely-used in XRF systems, only two counters and a few registers are needed to implement the additional function of pile-up pulse rejection and recovery. Consequently, the proposed system is much simpler than conventional pulse reconstruction systems. It is shown that the proposed method can detect and reject pile-up pulses exactly. It is also shown that the pile-up pulses can be recovered if some conditions are satisfied.

  • In this paper we propose and analyze a novel modulation and pre-equalization method to minimize signal processing time delay for the Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater (EDOCR) in ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) terrestrial digital TV system. The proposed modulation method uses Equi-Ripple (ER) filter coefficients instead of conventional Square Root Raised Cosine (SRRC) after coefficients for VSB (Vestigial Side Bands) pulse shaping. And the proposed pre-equalization method calculates pre-equalizer filter coefficients by using baseband signal as reference signal and demodulated repeater output signal, then generates a new VSB pulse shaping filter coefficients by convolutioning ER filter coefficients and pre-equalizer filter coefficients. The newly generated pulse shaping filter does not have minimized time delay by adjusting the number of pre-taps of the filter, but also compensates linear distortions caused by ER filter and mask filter.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a clock recovery algorithm of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing/Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Modulation-Digital Microwave Radio(OFDM/QPSK-DMR) system using Band Limited-Pulse Shaping Filter(BL-PSF) and compared the clock phase error variance of OFDM/QPSK-DMR system with that of single carrier DMR system. The OFDM/QPSK-DMR system using windowing method requires training sequence or Cyclic Prefix (CP) to synchronize the clock phase of received signal. But transmit efficient is increased in our proposed DMR system because of no using redundant data such as training sequence or CP. The proposed clock recovery algorithm is simply realized in the OFDM/QPSK-DMR system using BL-PSF. The simulation results confirm that the proposed clock recovery algorithm has the same clock phase error variance performance in a single carrier DR system under Additive White Gaussian Noise(AWGN) environment.

  • This paper proposes a UWB (Ultar-wideband) impulse generator using the gated ring oscillator. The oscillator and PLL circuits which generate a several GHz LO signal for the conventional architecture are replaced with the gated ring oscillator. Therefore, the system complexity is decreased. The proposed architecture controls the duty of enable signal, which is used for the head switch of ring oscillator. The control of the duty enables to tun off the oscillator during the guard interval and stop wasting the power consumption. The pulse shaping method using the counter makes the small side lobe and preserves the bandwidth regardless of the change on the center frequency. Designed UWB impulse generator could change the center frequency from 6.0 GHz to 8.8 GHz with a digital bit control, while it preserves the bandwidth as about 1.5 GHz.

  • We investigate an optical technique for beam shaping and optical amplification of a pulsed laser diode without variation of its original properties, such as repetition rate and pulse duration. The horizontal and longitudinal sizes of the pulsed laser diode are 300 and $2{\mu}m$, respectively, and its output power is $1.1mW/cm^2$. The multimodal and elliptical pulse shape of the laser diode is converted to the single-modal and Gaussian pulse shape by using a lensed optical fiber. Since the single-modal lensed fiber coupling from the multimodal pulsed laser diode degrades the output power severely, the output power of the pulsed laser diode is dramatically enhanced by using an optical amplification method based on master oscillated power amplification (MOPA). The pulse qualities of the laser diode are not changed after amplifying the pulse power and the output power was finally measured to be $29mW/cm^2$.

  • Generally, the frequency of set makes ICI and degrades OPDM system performance. Thus, we propose a pulse shaped OFDM to give robustness against the frequency offset. The proposed OFDM system uses pulse shaping with smooth shape, instead of rectangular pulse shape, to reduce the power of ICI. The proposed scheme always gives performance gain in comparing with the convention one, when the frequency offset exists. In addition, the smoother pulse shape is employed in the proposed system, the more performance gain is obtained.

  • It is shown that the inversion of the undamped Bloch equation for an amplitude-modulated broadband π/2 pulse can be precisely treated as an inverse scattering problem for a Schrodinger equation on the positive semiaxis. The pulse envelope is closely related to the central potential and asymptotically the wave function takes the form of a regular solution of the radial Schrodinger equation for s-wave scattering. An integral equation, which allows the calculation of the pulse amplitude (the potential) from the phase shift of the asymptotic solution, is derived. An exact analytical inversion of the integral equation shows that the detuning-independent π/2 pulse amplitude is given by a delta function. The equation also provides a means to calculate numerically approximate π/2 pulses for broadband excitation.

  • A uniformly sampled digital pulse-width modulation adopting a pre-compensation filter scheme for applications in high-resolution digital-to-analog data conversion is described. It is shown that linearization of the intrinsic distortion resulting in uniformly sampled pulse-width modulation can be achieved by using a non-integer delay digital filter embedded within a noise shaping re-quantizer.

  • In the high-speed forming analysis, dynamic material properties considering a high strain rate are required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experiment was performed for measuring dynamic material properties under high strain rate. The pulse shaping method was used to improve the accuracy of the SHPB experiment. A pulse shaper attached to the front of the incident bar was used for specimen dynamic stress equilibrium through stress wave control. Numerical analysis and SHPB test were performed to verify whether the pulse shaper affects the dynamic stress equilibrium in copper and Al6061 specimens. The results of SHPB test and numerical analysis show that the pulse shaper contributes to the dynamic stress equilibrium. Based on the improved stress equilibrium using a pulse shaper, the flow stress curves for copper and Al6061 materials were obtained at strain rates of 1344.4/sec and 1291.6/sec, respectively.
