The objective of this study is to investigate on the pulsating combustion of a granular coal in a Rijke type pulse combustor. The combustor is made of a 120cm long pipe with a honeycomb as a fire grate in the lower half. A fixed amount of coal is laid on the honeycomb and burned downward after ignition by using propane gas. Then the combustion driven acoustic oscillation occurs and makes the combustion pulsate with a very high amplitude. The effect of the pulsation and the air flow rate on the combustion characteristics is examined in comparison with the normal combustion. The non-pulsating combustion is made possible by placing absorbing material under the honeycomb. The combustion phenomena are observed visually, the burning time is measured in order to evaluate the combustion rate, and the variation of the gas temperatures is recorded. It is found that the fuel particle is greatly agitated like boiling by the flow pulsation and the burning-down velocity is so fast that the fuel is burned almost simultaneously. The combustion rate can be increased as twice as that of non-pulsating combustion with increase of the air flow rate. And the combustion becomes clean with less soot deposit and emission.

The experimental study was carried out to investigate the pressure fluctuation, operating frequency, noise emission and combustion characteristics in an aero-valved pulsating combustor. Measurements of the pressure fluctuation, mean temperature and ion current inside the combustion chamber indicate that combustion phenomena are characteristically similar to those in the diffusion flame. The measured frequency schedue indicates that the acoustic theory of the quarter wave tube can be approximated to give the operating frequency, but correction factor must be involved to estimate the correct operating frequency. The spectral behavior of the noise emission exhibits that frequency bands with high noise intensity are narrowly restricted to the neighborhood of the operating frequency signalling the low-frequency combustion characteristics of the pulsating combustor. Measurements of the operating characteristics as variation of the fuel nozzle diameter and injection angle with 4 fuel nozzles have been made, and it was found that the system produced the stable operating conditions up to the turn down ratio of 3 when the fuel nozzle diameter is 1.2mm, and the optimum fuel injection angle is thought to be in the neighborhood of 30.deg. radially.
The effects of unsteady combustion are experimentally studied using forced pulsating mixture supply. It was shown that unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillations. It may also have desirable performances, from a practical point of view, such as high combustion load, augmented heat transfer, reduced pollutant emissions and so on. We examined the characteristics of unsteady combustion driven by forced pulsating mixture supply in a small duct-combustor with a rearward-facing step. Further, we found its influence on the onset of self-excited combustion oscillations, the possibility of suppressing self-excited combustion oscillations and the reason why the self-excited combustion oscillation was suppressed using the forced pulsating mixture supply, comparing with the steady mixture supply.

A numerical solution for heat transfer in the flue tube of a pulse combustion water heater was presented. The $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model was adopted to describe turbulent characteristics and radiative heat transfer was calculated by P-N approximation. Three pulsating conditions equivalent to existing experimental studies were used for analysis. Pulsating pressure was specified at the inlet and outlet of flue tube and numerical procedure using control volume method and pressure boundary condition was presented. It was found that the present mathematical model and numerical method could predict effectively the flow field and heat transfer for the flue tube in pulse combustor.

The experimental study was carried out to investigate the performance characteristics of the aero-valved pulsating combustor designed to increase the practical applications of the system. The geometric effect on the stable condition and the dynamic behavior of the system is identified. The equivalence ratio, the inflammability limit, the operating frequency, and thrust were also measured when the system oscillated stably. It is found that while the operating condition is sensitive to the diameter of the inlet pipe and the length of the tailpipe, the maximum value of the turn down ratio was obtained up to 3.2. The measured air flow rate shows that the equivalence ratio increases monotonously with the increasing fuel flow rate and decreasing air inlet diameter and tailpipe length. The measured operating frequency can be approximated by the simple linear equation and the discrepancy is within five percent. The system produced the maximum total thrust of 14N and the minimum specific fuel consumption of 0.155 Nm$^{3}$/h.N when the total thrust was 13N.
The paper describes a study of the variation of the NO production emitted from turbulent propane flames established on a practical combustor where a primary and a secondary fuel lines are installed. The flowrate of the secondary fuel is pulsated or added in addition to that of the primary fuel which constrantly flows to the nozzle of the burner. Two modes depending on the positions of supplying the secondary fuel are performed; one is for its position to be placed at the center of the primary fuel tube and the other around the stabilization baffle. The mean concentrations of gas species, $O_2,\;Co\;CO_2,\;NO$, and HC(unburnt hydrocarbones) have been measured at the exit of the combustor. As equivalence ration $({\Phi})$ is increased the profile of the NO concentration on the latter mode rises slowly less than that on the former one. In the range of ${\Phi}=0.5$ to 0.54 the NO production is reduced by about 35% more on the latter mode than on the former one. The influence of pulsating the secondary fuel on the variation of the NO concentration doesn't appear at both modes.

Generally, combustion instability is generated by the mutual coupling between the heat release and the acoustic pressure in the combustor. On the occasion, the acoustic pressure generates the oscillation of the mass flow rate of propellant injected from injector, and this oscillation again affects combustion in the combustor. So, the dynamic characteristics of the injector have been studied to control combustion instability using injector itself in Russia from 1970's. In order to study injector dynamics, a mechanical pulsator for forced pressure pulsation is produced and the method to quantify the mass flow rate of the propellant that is oscillating at the exit of the injector is developed. With the pulsator and the method, pulsating values of the mass flow rate, pressure, liquid film thickness, and axial velocity generated at the exit of the simplex swirl injector are measured in real time. And phase-amplitude characteristics of each parameter are analyzed using these pulsating values acquired at the exit of the simplex swirl injector.

Experimental study was carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics of the hero-valved pulsating combustor with maximum operating capacity of 56kW. The pressure, the ion current, and the temperature fluctuations were simultaneously measured and statistically analyzed to identify the combustion process, the reignition and the mixing process of the reactants. It was found that the pulse combustion process was intermittent and the reignition of the reactants was caused by a direct contact and rapid mixing with the previous hot residuals. The analysis of the measured data indicated that the combustion process consisted of there stages in the combustion chamber; the preheating of the reactants in the vicinity of the air inlet pipe, the explosive combustion in the central region and the afterburning in the vicinity of the tailpipe. Wile the inflow of the fresh air occurred during the negative period of the pressure in the mechanical valved system, it occurred during the rising period of the pressure in the aero-valved system.

This study is on the pulsating combustion of premixed gas in a Rijke type combustor made of a honeycomb flame holder in a tube. Modelling for the onset condition of the oscillation is made by the ratio of the acoustic power generation based on the analysis of heat transfer to the power loss due to the thermoviscous dissipation and radiation. Experiment is performed for the characteristics of acoustic, thermal and combustion. It is shown that the theoretical modelling for the oscillation may be used as a limit condition. And the combustion analysis for the acoustic power generation is needed for better prediction of the onset condition. Experimental result shows that, by pulsation, the flame length is shortened and the flame temperature is decreased with increase in the heat transfer coefficient. The NO$_{x}$ concentration in the exhaust gas is significantly reduced by pulsation and the concentration of unburned hydrocarbon shows a little increase.e.
