  • In this paper, the variable speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motor driven by a sinus¬oidal PWM inverter based on maximum torque sensitivity is presented. The developed torque or speed control is achieved by the field orientation technique. For the field orientation, the resolver is used as the rotor positioning sensor mounted on the motor shaft without pull-out of the synchonism at any speed. To show the validity of proposed control method, the simulation and experimental results are provided. The advantages of the proposed control method are to achieve the fast current and speed responses.

  • When a vehicle is operated over sort terrain, torque(or soil thrust) applied to driving wheel brings about shear displacement far soil due to compression and shear failure of soil under tire. This shear displacement give rise to slip and a additional sinkage due to slip. This additional sinkage is usually referred to as slip-sinkage. The slip-sinkage is affected by soil conditions and inflation pressure of tire. This slip-sinkage influence tractive performance on driving wheel . We conducted the experimental study far investigating the effect of slip on sinkage and tractive performance of driving wheel, such as motion resistance, thrust and drawbar pull. The experiment was carried out over three different soil conditions(soft, hard and very hard soil) far a tire with three levels of inflation pressure(120kPa, 240kPa and 360kPa). The results of this study show qualitatively slipsinkage characteristics and slip-tractive performance relationships of driving wheel with soil conditions and inflation pressure of tire.

  • Shipbuilder checks the status of main engine and propeller operation before sea trial. Generally these tests are carried out at a quay during fitting out of the ship. For these tests the operator has to estimate the maximum RPM with permissible torque and thrust to ensure the safety of the mooring line and ship. In this paper, the propeller characteristics according to the draft variation for a moored ship is inveatigated. From these tests, it is shown that shaft submergence is a dominant parameter in the propeller performance at shallow shaft submergence and that the propeller performance is dependent upon the propeller RPM when the shaft submergence is kept unchanged. In this study, a simple formula of the required thrust for a given propeller shaft submergence and propeller RPM is derived. 1be propeller thrust, which is calculated by another formula in case of dtep draft, is compared with results of bollard pull test for FPSO.

  • Lunar rover plays an important role in lunar exploration. Especially, performance of rover wheel related to interaction with lunar soil is of great importance when it comes to optimization of rover's configuration. In this study, in order to investigate the motion performance of lunar rover's wheel on Korean Lunar Soil Simulant (KLS-1), a single wheel testbed was developed and used to carry out a series of experiments with two kinds of wheel with grousers and without grousers which were used to perform the experiments. Wheel traction performance was evaluated by using traction parameters such as drawbar pull, torque and sinkage correlated with slip ratio. The results showed that the single wheel testbed was suitable for evaluation of the performance of wheel and rover wheel with grousers which was likely to have higher traction performance than that without grousers in Korean Lunar soil simulant. The experimental results could be utilized in verification of the optimum wheel design and effectiveness of wheel traction for Korean lunar rover.

  • This study was conducted to investigate experimentally the effect of track tension on the tractive performance of rice combine. The experiment was carried out at the two in-door soil bins with soil types of loam and sandy loam. The initial track tension was varied by three different values of 0.71, 1.75 and 3.84kN at three different forward velocity settings of 0.17, 0.32 and 0.45m/s, respectively. The data acquisition system was designed and used for the measurement of pull, driving axle torque and its velocity under the test conditions to calculate the tractive efficiency. Results of the study were summarized as follows : 1) The effect of the initial track tension on the tractive efficiency was found being significantly dependent on soil types but not on forward velocities. Therefore, the benifit of adjusting the initial track tension may be obtained when the types of soils on which combines operate are changed. 2) In loam, tractive efficiency decreased with increase in track tension. However, it increased in sandy loam until it reached to a peak value and then decreased with increase in track tension. 3) The maximum tractive efficiency of the tested combine was obtained with an initial track tension of about 1.75kN on sandy loam, and below that on loam at about 5% slippage without being noticeably influenced by the forward velocity.

  • This study was carried out to develop a versatile data acquisition/processing system for overall tractor performance utilizing a NEC PC-8001 microcomputer. The data acquisition system measures drawbar pull and power, wheel torque and axle power, ground speed, wheel slip, fuel flow, and engine speed. The system stores hexadecimal data for these variables in memory. Upon completion of each test run, all hexadecimal data stored in memory are recorded on floppy disc. The data processing system reads in the data collected on floppy disc and interprete them using several graphical and statistical techniques. The system uses the same microcomputer and a dot-matrix printer. The data acquisition system has been installed on a GOLDSTAR 500 tractor (2WD, 50 ps). A field study has shown that tractor performance data can be quickly and easily collected. It also appeared that the data processing system can be used to efficiently analyze the collected data. The data acquisition system has some troublesome in mounting and handling on tractor since it uses a general-purpose computer consisting of several components.

  • During normal operating conditions, a motor vehicle is constantly subjected to a variety of forces, which can adversely affect its straight-ahead motion performance. These forces can originate both from external sources such as wind and road and from on-board sources such as tires, suspension, and chassis configuration. One of the effects of these disturbances is the phenomenon of vehicle lateral-drift during straight-ahead motion. This paper examines the effects of road crown, tires, and suspension on vehicle straight-ahead motion. The results of experimental studies into the effects of these on-board and external disturbances are extremely sensitive to small changes in test conditions and are therefore difficult to guarantee repeatability. This study was therefore conducted by means of computer simulation using a full vehicle model. The purpose of this paper is to gain further understanding of the straight-ahead maneuver from simulation results, some aspects of which may not be obtainable from experimental study. This paper also aims to clarify some of the disputable arguments on the theories of vehicle straight-ahead motion found in the literature. Tire residual aligning torque, road crown angle, scrub radius and caster angle in suspension geometry, were selected as the study variables. The effects of these variables on straight-ahead motion were evaluated from the straight-ahead motion simulation results during a 100m run in free control mode. Examination of vehicle behavior during straight-ahead motion under a fixed control mode was also carried out in order to evaluate the validity of several disputable arguments on vehicle pull theory, found in the literature. Finally, qualitative comparisons between the simulation results and the test results were made to support the validity of the simulation results.
