  • Types of problems and solutions to vehicle routing problems are discussed. A case study on a public transport is conducted to discover the characteristics of problems in route selection. The characteristics of problems solved by certain technique or algorithm are also studied to investigate the capability of current techniques in solving public bus routing.

  • Schedule-based public transit routing algorithm computes a single route that calculated minimum travel time using the departure and arrival times for each stop according to vehicle operation plan. However, additional factors such as transfer resistance and alternative route choice are not reflected in the path finding process. Therefore, this paper proposes a improved RAPTOR that reflected transfer resistance and multi-path searching. Transfer resistance is applied at the time of transfer and different values can be set according to type of transit mode. In this study, we analyzed the algorithm's before and after results compared with actual route of passengers. It is confirmed that the proposed algorithm reflects the various route selection criteria of passengers.

  • The Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) system is the flexible public transport service that determines the route and schedule of the service vehicles according to users' requests. With increasing importance of public transport systems in urban areas, the development of stable and fast routing algorithms for DRT has become the goal of many researches over the past decades. In this study, a new heuristic method is proposed to generate fast and efficient routes for multiple vehicles using demand clustering and destination demand priority searching method considering the imbalance of users' origin and destination demands. The proposed algorithm is tested in various demand distribution scenarios including random, concentration and directed cases. The result shows that the proposed method reduce the drop of service ratio due to an increase in demand density and save computation time compared to other algorithms. In addition, compared to other clustering-based algorithms, the walking cost of the passengers is significantly reduced, but the detour time and in-vehicle travel time of the passenger is increased due to the detour burden.

  • This study derived the algorithm of a public transportation route search that adds safety and environmental costs according to user preference. As the means of an algorithm application and evaluation, Macro Simulation, VISUM was conducted for an analysis. The route using the subway, which is relatively low in safety and environment resistance value was preferred, and it was analyzed to select the safe and environmental route even though it detours. This study can be applicable when to verify the algorithm of route search considering safety and environment, and when introducing the algorithm of route search according to user preference in the smart-phone application in the future, it can provide users with very useful information by choosing a route as for safety and environment, and through this, the quality of user-friendly information provision can be promoted.

  • The local governments of major cities in Korea are giving focus on public transportation to reduce congestion and improve accessibility in city areas. In this regards, the proper measurement of accessibility is now a key policy requirement for reorganizing the public transport network. Public transport routing problems, however, are considered to be highly complicated since a multi-mode travel generates different combinations of accessibility. While most of the previous research efforts on measuring transport accessibility are found at zone-levels, an alternative approach at a finer scale such as bus links and stops is presented in this study. We proposes a method to compute the optimal route choice of origin-destination pairs and measure the accessibility of the chosen modes combination based on topological configuration. The genetic algorithm is used for the computation of the journey paths, whereas the space syntax theory is used for the accessibility. This study used node-link data in GIS instead of axial lines which are manually drawn in space syntax. The resulting accessibilities of bus stops are calibrated by O-D survey data and the proposed process is tested on a CBD of Seoul.
