We investigated the seasonality of Anopheles mosquitoes, including its species composition, density, parity, and population densities of mosquitoes infected with the parasite in Ganghwa-do (Island), a vivax malaria endemic area in the Republic of Korea. Mosquitoes were collected periodically with a dry-ice-tent trap and a blacklight trap during the mosquito season (April-October) in 2008. Anopheles sinensis (94.9%) was the most abundant species collected, followed by Anopheles belenrae (3.8%), Anopheles pullus (1.2%), and Anopheles lesteri (0.1%). Hibernating Anopheles mosquitoes were also collected from December 2007 to March 2008. An. pullus (72.1%) was the most frequently collected, followed by An. sinensis (18.4%) and An. belenrae (9.5%). The composition of Anopheles species differed between the mosquito season and hibernation seasons. The parous rate fluctuated from 0% to 92.9%, and the highest rate was recorded on 10 September 2008. Sporozoite infections were detected by PCR in the head and thorax of female Anopheles mosquitoes. The annual sporozoite rate of mosquitoes was 0.11% (2 of 1,845 mosquitoes). The 2 mosquitoes that tested positive for sporozoites were An. sinensis. Malarial infections in anopheline mosquitoes from a population pool were also tried irrespective of the mosquito species. Nine of 2,331 pools of Anopheles mosquitoes were positive. From our study, it can be concluded that An. sinensis, which was the predominant vector species and confirmed as sporozoite-infected, plays an important role in malaria transmission in Ganghwa-do.
This study was conducted to investigate the positive effect of health promoting strategy program on health of the elderly who use senior citizens' center. This study was conducted to contribute to the expansion of activity areas of nurses in the fiel of health promotion services whose importance are increasing day by day. To achieve such goals the writer analized the social values of health promotion services through the method of literature reveiw and held workshops five times with the research team to develop a new program model applicable in health centers and industry. As a conclusion, we recommended the following roles of nurses to be reevaluted an reinforced: 1. Roles as advertizers of the importance of keeping positive health, its social diffussion, an making social environments supporting it. 2. Roles of intervention to change life-styles into positive, active, and client-centered ones 3. Roles of communicators, planners, and managers for the contribution to the maximization of team efficiency with a view to reducing health risk and preventing health threat.
Objectives: The nurse visiting health service named Customized Visiting Health Care Program(CVHCP) requires the service innovations incorporating community support into a local service network. The purpose of this study was to assess the community network in CVHCP and inform improvement in this network. Methods: We used Social Network Analysis(SNA) in one CVHCP at H city. Network links were generated by self-administered questionnaires by the 14 community resource centers who quantified their links to all other 25 agents on the list. Links were analyzed by a dichotomous scale for any experience of collaboration and a scored scale of 0 to 3 for level of collaboration using UCINET v6. Results: A list of 14 agents was generated, and local network was dominated by the Public Health Center and a local welfare center named Unlimited Care Center(UCC). According to centrality score, UCC was the most prominent agent, and Public Health Center was the most influential agent, being a link in the pathway flow between other agents for 9.5% of contribution. CVHCP scored lower rank of prominent with 30.8% of other agents reported referring to it. Conclusions: Social network analysis provides a useful network description for informing and evaluation service network improvement in maximizing its service for the CVHCP.
Purpose: Perceived stigma may disrupt the ability of people with physical disability to successfully adapt to their situation. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between perceived stigma and self-esteem among adults with physically disabled. Method: The sample was drawn from August to October of 2006 at the rehabilitation centers and public health centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The data were collected from 314 persons with physical difficulty. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Perceived stigma was measured using the Perceived Stigma Scale for the person with physical disability developed by Lee. Result: There were significant differences of perceived stigma of the person with physical disability according to marital status and economic status. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between perceived stigma and self-esteem of the person with physical disability. Conclusion: The Findings of this study suggest that using nursing intervention to decrease the perceived stigma may promote self-esteem among persons with physical disability.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the economic feasibility of public postpartum care centers established for health care of low-income postpartum mothers. 6 of 8 public postpartum care centers were used to verify the economic feasibility and research data were collected through the centers. A sensitivity analysis was performed with the bed turnover rate, assuming that users in a postpartum care center will be decreased. As a result, B/C ratio was estimated to be 1.50 and the net benefit was estimated to be KRW 186,557 in million. A sensitivity analysis showed that B/C was 1.42 at 17.4 of bed turnover rate and 1.26 at 15.4 which indicates the lowest bed turnover rate among subjects. A public postpartum care center was evaluated as economically feasible as public works. Therefore it is necessary that the public postpartum care centers operated by local governments should be expanded through legal amendment.

Background: Based on the importance of ceasing smoking programs to control the regional disparity of smoking behavior in Korea, this study aims to reveal the variation of smoke rate and determinants of it for 229 provinces. An evaluation of the relative efficiency of the cease smoking program under the consideration of regional characteristics was followed. Methods: The main sources of data are the Korean Statistical Information Service and a national survey on the expenditure of public health centers. Multivariate regression is performed to figure the determinants of regional variation of smoking rate. Based on the result of the regression model, clustering analysis was conducted to group 229 regions by their characteristics. Three clusters were generated. Using data envelopment analysis (DEA), relative efficiency scores are calculated. Results from the pooled model which put 229 provinces in one model to score relative efficiency were compared with the cluster-separated model of each cluster. Results: First, the maximum variation of the smoking rate was 16.9%p. Second, sex ration, the proportion of the elder, and high risk drinking alcohol behavior have a significant role in the regional variation of smoking. Third, the population and proportion of the elder are the main variables for clustering. Fourth, dissimilarity on the results of relative efficiency was found between the pooled model and cluster-separated model, especially for cluster 2. Conclusion: This study figured regional variation of smoking rate and its determinants on the regional level. Unconformity of the DEA results between different models implies the issues on regional features when the regional evaluation performed especially on the programs of public health centers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the situation of occurrence of disease and accidence of child care center. The subjects of this study were 17 public district child care centers, but only one center kept their health diary. Therefore, it became finally the only subject for this study. The data were collected through the analysis it's health diary and case reports for emergency. The collected data were analyzed by the number of cases, age and sex, types of case, and the emergency case were analyzed by age, background, types of accidents and follow up. The number of cases of disease and accident in 2002 were 572. In sexual difference, boys more have accident than girls. The teachers and the outsiders also frequently use the health care service. Smallpox and epidemic conjunctivitis were spreaded during winter and summer. In causes of accidents, 'accident by other child' were 98%. In emergency cases, 1 pierced wound, 1 dislocation, 2 dental emergencies, 4 eyeball contusion and bleedings and 2 burns were occurred. all the cases of emergency were performed follow up education. On the basis of above data, there will be needed to intensify health and safety subjects in curriculum for the teacher of child care, and health and safety education for child. Each child care centers must have health care manager and the network for emergency. To enhance the quality of child care service, government have to offer financial and systematical support.
Vaccination is the most powerful and useful preparation against infectious diseases. However, developing vaccines costs a lot and requires extensive long-term efforts. Therefore, the government should research and develop vaccines with a national-level policy. To greatly enhance the success rate of vaccine development, the policy should be set up considering priorities such as the current status of domestic research, the importance for public health, the urgency of research. The Delphi technique was utilized to draft this survey, through a brainstorming stage, then two inquiries, and finally the final panel meeting where unresolved items were discussed, to draw the conclusion. Among the results, firstly, the highest ranked item on centralized fields for vaccine development by the Ministry of Health was 'self-sufficiency of vaccines.' Secondly, 'emerging infectious disease' was most highly ranked in prioritized fields of vaccine development and research. Thirdly, for the vaccine that needs to be improved and developed further by the government to improve its efficacy and safety, BCG (Bacille de Calmette) for tuberculosis was ranked the highest on both types (intradermal and subcutaneous injection) from National Immunization Programme (NIP) and non-NIP. As for the high risk pathogens, 'anthrax' and 'smallpox' were first and second, consecutively. Lastly, 'development and control of vaccine candidates' was ranked the highest for the area in need for technique development in order to improve domestic vaccine's research level. The results of this study will be put to good use as basic data for the national vaccine research and development (R&D) policy of the country. This study was first step and more studies should be carried out for the final decision of the national vaccine R&D priority.

Owing to global climate change, the global resurgence of vector-borne infectious diseases and their potential to inflict widespread casualties among human populations has emerged as a pivotal burden on public health systems. Tsutsugamushi disease (scrub typhus) in the Republic of Korea is steadily increasing and was designated as a legal communicable disease in 1994. The disease is a mite-borne acute febrile disease most commonly contracted from October to December. In this study, we tried to determine the prevalence of tsutsugamushi disease transmitted by chigger mites living on rodents and investigated their target vector diversity, abundance, and distribution to enable the mapping of hotspots for this disease in 2015. A total of 5 species belonging to 4 genera (109 mites): Leptotrombidium scutellare 60.6%, L. pallidum 28.4% Neotrombicula tamiyai 9.2%, Euschoengastia koreaensis/0.9%), and Neoschoengastia asakawa 0.9% were collected using chigger mite collecting traps mimicking human skin odor and sticky chigger traps from April to November 2015. Chigger mites causing tsutsugamushi disease in wild rodents were also collected in Hwaseong for the zoonotic surveillance of the vector. A total of 77 rodents belonging to 3 genera: Apodemus agrarius (93.5%), Crocidura lasiura (5.2%), and Micromys minutus (1.3%) were collected in April, October, and November 2015. The most common mite was L. pallidum (46.9%), followed by L. scutellare (18.6%), and L. orientale (18.0%). However, any of the chigger mite pools collected from rodent hosts was tested positive for Orientia tsutsugamushi, the pathogen of tsutsugamushi disease, in this survey.
