Finding publications that propose alternative methods to animal experiments is an important but time-consuming task since researchers need to perform various queries to literature databases and screen many articles to assess two important aspects: the relevance of the article to the research question, and whether the article's proposed approach qualifies to being an alternative method. We are currently developing a Web application to support finding alternative methods to animal experiments. The current (under development) version of the application utilizes external tools and resources for document processing, and relies on the PubAnnotation ecosystem for annotation querying, annotation storage, dictionary-based tagging of cell lines, and annotation visualization. Currently, our two PubAnnotation repositories for discourse elements contain annotations for more than 110k PubMed documents. Further, we created an annotator for cell lines that contain more than 196k terms from Cellosaurus. Finally, we are experimenting with TextAE for annotation visualization and for user feedback.

Purpose: Vasomotor symptoms including hot flash are very common to postmenopausal women. Estrogen therapy was regarded as the best option for relieving menopausal symptoms until 2002, when the Women#s Health Initiative(WHI) reported the side effect of the therapy. Consequently, studies on the complementary and alternative medical herbs and therapy for the management of menopausal symptoms have followed. And so we have reviewed some international clinical studies about the management of postmenopausal symptoms with acupuncture therapy. Methods: "Menopause and acupuncture" was designated as a key word in the search site. Pub Med, and nine papers dealing with hot flash among the relevant RCTs were selected, and then, the effect of acupuncture on hot flash and the way the researches had been done was examined. Results : The intensity of hot flash reduced significantly and the frequency of hot flash was inclined to reduce, but not significantly, compared to the controlled group. Conclusion: Each clinical test has its limitations in point of the number of the required samples. However, it still shows the possibility that acupuncture itself will be effective enough to reduce the intensity of hot flash to a certain degree. It is believed that extensive clinical tests on the effect of acupuncture on hot flash will need to be done hereafter. And when the tests are carried out, it is required to exclude placebo effect, do blind test, and carefully select and control the methods.

새로운 기술의 발달과 병행하는 정보이용환경의 급격한 변화는 정보원의 이용 및 정보서비스에 대한 새로운 고찰을 요구한다. 이용자 정보추구의 올바른 이해는 정보서비스의 향상에 핵심적인 역할을 하고 있으므로 변화하는 정보이용환경에 따라 이용자의 정보추구를 시기적절하게 새롭게 고찰할 필요가 있다. 많은 이전 연구들이 이용자 정보추구에 초점을 맞추고 있으나 의사들의 정보추구, 특히 진료정보 및 의학지식 추구를 동시에 대상으로 한 연구는 거의 없다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 진료와 의학연구를 동시에 수행하는 대학병원의 강사인 의사들의 정보추구행태를 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 본 연구는 연세의료원 강사 12명을 대상으로 개방형 반구조화 형식의 심층 면접을 통하여 수집하였다. 면접 내용은 크게 연구 환경, 진료와 관련된 정보 추구 행태, 선호하는 정보원과 자료 유형, 검색과정과 만족도의 4가지 주제로 구성하였다. 응답 결과 연구 목적의 정보추구에 있어서는 PubMed를 통한 전자학술지 대한 신뢰도가 더 높았으나 진료 목적인 경우에는 인쇄형태의 교과서를 더 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 정보원에 대한 권위와 근거를 매우 중요시하는 의사들의 태도에서 그 원인을 찾을 수 있다.

최근 한의학에 대한 과학적 접근이 진행되면서 한약재 성분의 효능을 검증하고자 하는 다양한 분자 생물학 분야의 연구가 진행되고 있다. 하지만 관련 한약재의 주요 성분과 관련된 생화학적 기작을 손쉽게 검색할 수 있는 시스템이 갖추어져 있지 못한 실정이다. 본 연구는 국내 한약재에 대한 약효 성분과 생물학적 기작에 대한 정보를 수집 및 텍스트마이닝을 수행하여 한약재 정보 데이터베이스를 구축하고자 하였다. 연구자가 손쉽게 분석된 한약재의 화합물, 유전자 그리고 생물학적 상호작용 정보를 검색할 수 있는 웹사이트 원형을 개발하였다. 문헌 분석결과 한의학분야 주요 화합물 및 유전자/단백질 정보를 추출할 수 있었고 현대 한의학 연구 현황의 특징을 보여주었다. 분석된 결과는 웹을 통해 한약재별 PubMed 문헌 정보와 관련된 한약재의 약재 정보 및 생물학적 상호작용 정보를 가시화하여 볼 수 있도록 개발하였다.
