This study was made on 274 apoplectics patients who received the rehabilitation therapy and tests on physical, psychological and social adaptations as outpatients in 23 general hospitals in the Seoul and Kyungi area. The basic data on degree of improvement of apoplectic patients studied from rehabilitation therapy. Data was collected over a period of 63 days, from February 21st till April, 23, 1996. The assigned physical therapist conducted direct interviews with patients after he answered the distributed questionnaires for each individual patient. The colleted data was processed by the $SPCC/C^+$ method. The results of the tests conducted to meascne the the degree of ADL dependency, depression and social activity corresponding to the physical, psychological, and social adaptation. The details are ; 1) The test to meascne the degree of ADL dependency, corresponding to the study of physical adaptation of CVA patients, indicated a mean score of 2.57(ideal score is 1.0) with a standard deviation of ${\pm}0.75$. The worst score was 3.95 while the best score was a perfect 1.0, representing a severe range of dependency. The distribution was centered with a median of 2.65 and a mode of 2.68. 2) The test to meascne the degree of depression which corresponds to the level of psychological adaptation yielded a mean of 2.99 which is higher than the normal limit of 2.45. The standard deviation was ${\pm}0.52$ and the worst score and the best score were 4.35 and Respectirdy. The distribution was centered with a median of 3.00 and a mode of 3.00. 3) The test to meascne the degree of social activities for the level of social adaptation indicated a very low mean score of 26.52 (perfect score is 144), with the standard deviation of ${\pm}16.23$. Some patients scored as high as 100, but others scored as low as 3. The distribution of social activities at a very low level was shifted to the left with a median of 24.00 and a mode of 20.00. 4) Factors influencing the level of physical, psychological and social adaptation are as follows : Factors significantly influencing the level of physical adaptation measured by ADL dependency are age, personal guardian, payer of medical expenses, and paralysis of the right arm, right leg and facial paralysis. Factors significantly influencing the level of psychological adaptation measured by the degree of depression, are age, marital status, education, medical history of individual and family, speech impediment, and facial paralysis. Factors significantly influencing the level of social adaptation measured by the degree of social activity are age, marital status, education, employment status, and the burden of medical expense. 5) The Corelationship is significant(9.00), between ADL dependeing as degree of physical adaptation and depreseion as degree of psychologial adaptation. ADL dependency is proportional to depression. But social activity is inversely protional to ADL dependeny and depression. In conclusion, the increased care for physical function of the patients is not the only necessary means to better facilitate the appropriate adaptation of CVA patients. The introduction of a solid rehabilitation program for psychological and social adaptation will also play the integral part of the treatment of CVA patients.
Despite the advances in medical technology, there are limited therapeutic interventions for cancer. Currently, the main goal of treatment is to remove a tumor completely. However, recent studies have shown that mortality is highly influenced by symptoms such as depression and cachexia, not solely by cancer itself. Depression is caused by psychological stress, and cachexia involves extreme weight loss with skeletal muscle atrophy, which are widely observed in patients with cancer. Although those two appear completely different from each other, they have a common etiology: cytokines. The production of cytokines can lead to depression and cachexia, and it contributes greatly to the increase in mortality rate. A better understanding of depression and cachexia in patients with cancer will help establish efficient treatment strategies.
Background and Objectives : Paradoxical vocal cord movement is a series of paroxysmal adduction of the anterior two-thirds of the vocal cords during respiration or during phonation. The choking, stridor, and wheezing in this condition occur primarily on inhalation, rather than on exhalation. The two pathognomonic diagnostic criterias that need to be assessed during an acute presentation are laryngoscopy with direct visualization of paradoxical adduction of the vocal cords and pulmonary function testing. Materials and Methods : A retrospective review of 3 patients who were referred to otolaryngologist from pulmonology department, and were confirmed by typical laryngoscopic findings with paradoxical adduction of the vocal cords was conducted. Results The patients were misdiagnosed as exercised-induced asthma, and unresponsive to corticosteroid and bronchodilators. Improvement was achieved only by diagnosis with paradoxial vocal cord movement. Biofeed back therapy, voice therapy, treatment for reflux laryngitis improved symptoms. Conclusion The etiology of paradoxical vocal cord movement is unknown. It may be functional or emotional. The functional factors that were proposed are neurologic deficit and gastroesophageal reflux. Management methods of this condition consist of psychological counselling, voice therapy, and antireflux medication.
Objective : The purpose of this case is to report the improvement of a patient with acute paralytic ileus with past history of mild depressive episode after acupuncture therapy and herbal medicine. Methods : We treated the patient, who had acute abdominal pain and were diagnosed as paralytic ileus, with acupuncture, herbal medicine and manipulation therapy. We observed changes of chief symptoms and abdominal states. Results : We treated the patient who had severe abdominal pain, constipation and anorexia caused by acute paralytic ileus. For about one month of the treatment, we had the improvement of the symptoms. Conclusions : This study suggests that Conservative korean medical treatment might be useful for abdominal pain caused by acute paralytic ileus, and make a patient feel psychological stability.
In 2006, 41% of newly-married Korean men living in agriculture or fishery area were married to foreign wives. These foreign wives suffer social, cultural, and psychological maladjustment. They need support in understanding Korean culture & language, economic independence, and mental health. This horticultural therapy program (HT program) was practiced to help the foreign wives gain emotional stability, to help them adapt to rural society, and to help them improve the relationship with their families. The participants of this HT program were 10 foreign wives, 5 Chinese, 2 Vietnamese, 1 Japanese, 1 Thai, and 1 Filipina. Total sessions were 12, and each session lasted for two hours. This program started April and ended July in 2007. After this program, self-esteem of participants increased from 29.6 to 33.5, and stress decreased from 77.3 to 64.7. Preserving dignity is a significant concern for individuals approaching the end of their lives, as they face an increasing number of conditions that can potentially compromise their dignity. This article discusses dignity therapy as one intervention method aimed at enhancing the psychological and spiritual well-being of patients with terminal illnesses. Dignity therapy is an empirically supported therapeutic intervention that interviews patients with nine questions about what is important to them and what they want to remember, culminating in the production of a document based on these conversations. This intervention serves as a valuable tool and framework, enabling clinical professionals to reflect on dignity. It also provides clinicians with a medium to connect with patients on a deeply human level.

Background: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is an involuntary leakage of urine from the urethra when intra-abdominal pressure increases, such as from sneezing, coughing, or physical exertion. It is caused by insufficient strength of the pelvic floor and sphincter muscles, resulting from vaginal delivery, obesity, hard physical work, or aging. The pelvic floor electrical stimulator is a conservative treatment generally used to relieve the symptoms of urinary incontinence. it recommended to applied before surgery is performed. Objects: The purpose of this study was to determine if the transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TCES) would be effective for the physiological symptoms and psychological satisfaction of women with SUI for an 8-weeks intervention. Methods: Easy-K is a specially designed user-friendly TCES. Five female who were diagnosed with SUI by a gynecologist but who did not require surgical intervention were included in this study. Intervention was implemented over an 8-week period. Outcome measures included vaginal ultrasonography, Levator ani muscle (LAM) contraction strength, incontinence quality of life (I-QOL), and female sexual function index (FSFI) questionnaires. Results: The bladder neck position significantly decreased across assessment time. Funneling index and urethral width significantly decreased after 8 weeks of intervention (p<.05). The bladder necksymphyseal distance and posterior rhabdosphincter thickness statistically increased and the anterior rhabdosphincter thickness showed a tendency to increase. All participants demonstrated a significant increase in the LAM contraction score across three assessment times (p<.05). Although the total score of the I-QOL did not show significant improvement, it steadily increased and among I-QOL subscales, only the "avoidance" subscale showed statistical improvements (p<.05). The total score of the FSFI statistically improved and the "desire" score significantly changed (p<.05). Conclusion: The TCES is recommended for women who want to apply conservative treatments before surgery and who have suffered from SUI in aspects of sexual function and quality of life.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate how the existence of companion animals and the type of companion animals affect the quality of life and emotional stability of adults in their 20s. Methods : The subjects of this study were adults in their twenties living in Busan who could understand the method of this study. The survey method was conducted with a questionnaire, consisting of 4 questions on general characteristics, 26 questions on quality of life, and 20 questions on emotional stability for a total of 50 questions. An independent t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to verify the difference in quality of life and emotional stability according to general characteristics. Results : As a result of analyzing the difference in the quality of life of the study subjects, the case of having a companion animal scored statistically significantly higher in the satisfaction of the physical domain, psychological domain, living environment domain, overall quality of life domain, and social domain. In addition, there was a statistically significant difference in the case of companion animals according to the type of companion animal. However, there was no statistical significance in the analysis of differences in emotional stability of study subjects according to the presence or absence of companion animals. Conclusion : This study was conducted with 400 adults in their twenties to determine the effects of the presence and absence and type of companion animals on the quality of life and emotional stability of adults in their twenties. As a result, the group with companion animals showed higher satisfaction scores than the group without companion animals in terms of quality of life. This suggests that raising companion animals for adults in their 20s has a positive effect on improving their quality of life. Therefore, it can be recommended for the physical, psychological, and social health of adults in their 20s.
