  • This study investigated the differential interactive effects of the combination of driving confidence and sensation-seeking on driving anger among different age groups, by using correlation analysis, a hierarchical regression and ANOVAs for the data gathered through the questionnaires administrated in a form of face-to-face interview. The results showed the followings. First, males tended to show higher level in driving anger than females. Second, whereas sensation-seeking was positively correlated with driving anger, age and driving experience were negatively correlated with driving anger, respectively. Third, although there was no significant relationship between driving confidence and driving anger among the drivers aged under 40 years, the drivers aged over 40 years showed higher level of driving anger as their driving confidence increased. Forth, level of sensation-seeking was found to be a strong predictor of driving anger in all age groups. Fifth, driving confidence and sensation-seeking appeared to affect the level of driving anger interactively among drivers aged under 40 years or over 65 years, resulting in higher driving anger only when both the levels of driving confidence and sensation-seeking were high. In contrast, driving confidence and sensation-seeking affected driving anger independently among the drivers aged 30-49 years. Implication and suggestion were discussed.

  • The aim of the present study was to examine moderating effects of self-esteem on perceived transgression wrongness and forgiveness defined as Worthington and Scherer's (2004) emotional forgiveness and decisional forgiveness when receiving apologies. Data collected from 861(486 males, 375 females) Korean college students were analyzed with hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows. First, on emotional forgiveness, the two-way interaction effect of perceived transgression wrongness and explicit self-esteem was significant. And on decisional forgiveness, the two-way interaction effect of perceived transgression wrongness and explicit self-esteem was significant. The effect of perceived transgression wrongness on emotional and decisional forgiveness for individuals with high explicit self-esteem is stronger than its impact for individuals with low self-esteem. These findings show that explicit self-esteem may play an important role in forgiveness in college students through interactions with perceived transgression wrongness. Second, on emotional forgiveness, the three-way interaction effect of perceived transgression wrongness, explicit self-esteem, and implicit self-esteem was significant. The effect of perceived transgression wrongness on emotional forgiveness for individuals with high explicit self-esteem having high implicit self-esteem is stronger than its impact for individuals with low explicit self-esteem having high implicit self-esteem. These findings show that discrepancies between implicit and explicit self-esteem are detrimental to emotional forgiveness. But, on decisional forgiveness, the three-way interaction effect of perceived transgression wrongness, explicit self-esteem, and implicit self-esteem was not significant. Implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

  • This study investigated the relationship of self-esteem, academic stress, social support, and parenting attitudes with depression of Korean children and adolescents using a meta-analysis. A total of 86 studies, both published and unpublished manuscripts, were included. The results showed that depression of children and adolescents were positively associated with self-esteem, social support, and functional parenting attitudes, and negatively related to academic stress. The largest effect size was found in the relationship with self-esteem, followed by the relationships with academic stress, social support, and functional parenting attitudes, all in the range between moderate and large effect size. As the analysis indicated the heterogeneity of the results, subsequent analyses were performed to test the moderating effects of instrument and age. The significant moderators were the types of instruments used to measure self-esteem, academic stress, parenting attitudes, and depression. Age was also a significant moderator.

The program was structured by exploring the meaning of life and happiness with focused on self-disclosure, dealing with regret and resentment, forgiveness, gratitude, and resilience. At first, pilot program was applied to 6 female elderly living alone for predicting the effects and modified the program. For verification of the program effect, 11 female elderly living alone were assigned to developed well-being enhancement program, also 11 female elderly living alone were assigned to comparison group who participate in activity-focused program, and 12 female elderly living alone were assigned to control group. Results indicated that regret for interpersonal relations and resentment of the female elderly living alone who participate in well-being enhancement program were reduced after participating the program, while their self-disclosure increased. The female elderly living alone who participate in well-being enhancement program showed lowered level of anxiety, loneliness, and awareness of aging, which were factors of well-bing in senescence. Moreover, their level of negative emotion was decreased, and life satisfaction, positive emotion, and happiness were increased after participating the program. But, all of those enhancement were not found in control group as well as comparison group. These results suggest that well-being enhancement program for the female elderly living alone developed in this study could be utilized in various settings.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the causes of turnover, the causes of stay, and the effects of turnover of college graduates with early careers, based on the concept of job embeddedness and their stances. For this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 college graduates with early careers and the interviews were analyzed with phenomenological analytic research. The result of the study shows that the cause of turnover intention includes fit and link which are components of job embeddedness. More specifically, turnover intention of the interviewee is affected by fit which includes whether their ability and talent are used properly and whether their vision and culture fit well those of their organization, also affected by link which includes the formal or informal mutual relationship with coworkers and superiors. Stay intention, on the other hand, includes fit which contains satisfaction about work and organization, long-term career management. Stay intention also includes sacrifice which are anxiety about uncertain future and satisfaction about being employed. As an aspect of the effect of turnover, the satisfaction and fulfillment about work which are experienced after turnover by the interviewees and the satisfaction about coworkers and the team in which the interviewees are included offset the negative effect of turnover. The result also shows that organization should consider their workers' satisfaction about the first work, their amicable relationship, and turnover cost, to improve working and living standard of colleges graduates with early careers and to prevent them from turnover.

  • Do social situations have an impact on an individual's information processing and emotional experiences? Two studies were conducted to investigate relationships between self-reference effects, emotional experiences and social information processing. Study 1 examined whether biases favoring self-related stimuli could occur automatically. Participants had to judge whether sequential geometric shape-label pairs matched or mismatched. The results showed that self-related stimuli are more rapidly processed than friends/others-related stimuli. In Study 2, the participants had to recall items which were presented with different instructions (either chosen by a friend or by the computer). Here we explored whether the self-reference effect is reduced in a social learning condition. When comparing the social learning condition (seated in pairs) with the nonsocial learning condition (seated alone), the participants recalled more self-related words in the nonsocial learning condition than in the social learning condition. Importantly, the automatic self-reference effect disappeared in the social learning condition. More friends-related words were recalled in the social condition than self-related words. In addition, while tasting chocolates, the participants judged them to be more likeable in the social condition than in the nonsocial condition. These results implicated that social processing can be useful for reducing the automatic self-reference effects and shared experiences are perceived more intensely than unshared experiences.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore a risk and a protective factors of adolescent runaway based on the previous researches. Runaway of adolescents is increasing, and it is longer and more habit gradually than past. The prevailance methods of runaway is no longer effects on the decrease of adolescent runaway. Now there is to accept adolescent runaway, and has to support the difficult life conditions and the emotional distress of adolescent post-runaway. This means that must be identify and treatment the protective factors having an buffering effect as well as the risk factors influencing on runaway. Although the worse factors related family are the highest risk factors of runaway, others factors including negative peer relation, a academic stress also an have significant influence on runaway. And the protective factors mediating the negative influence of risk factors are an monitoring and controlling of parent as authoritative rearing attitude, a social support, a positive coping strategies, a self-esteem, and a conventional peer group. Protective factors prevent from runaway behavior, as well as improve a resilience of adolescents in the poor environment. The tasks of follow study are to investigate empirically the mediating effects of the protective factors on the problem behavior of post-runaway and resilience of runaway adolescents based on the systematic research design.

  • The present research examined the proposition that once people violate traffic regulations, they would experience cognitive dissonance and subsequently engage in changing their attitudes toward the law negatively in order to reduce the dissonance. In an experiment, participants were presented with three scenarios in which a person violated traffic laws, and they were asked to imagine themselves as the person of the scenarios and write statements supporting the unlawful behaviors. Participants' attitudes toward the general traffic law and the regulations related to the violations were measured 8 weeks before and right after the experimental treatment. The results, as expected, showed that their attitudes toward the general traffic law and the specific regulations in the scenarios changed negatively after writing the statements. In each secnarios, the participants who chose to wrote statements supporting the unlawful behaviors showed great attitude changes that those who did not write the statements. Furthermore, attitudes toward the regulations that were not directly related to the scenarios did not change significantly, and participants who were expected to experience stronger dissonance arousal (e.g.., supported more unlawful behaviors or had have more positive attitudes toward the law before the experiment) showed greater attitude changes. These results support the effects of trivial unlawful behaviors on attitudes toward the law and strongly suggest the role of cognitive dissonance underlying the effects.

  • It is the aim of present paper to examine the effects of experienced violence and observed violence in original family on adaptation in college students. In addition, the degree of contribution of two types of aggression in family were examined. Participants were 220 college students. Among them, those who have experienced violence from mother are 60.3%. And 52.3% reported violence from father. Those who have observed their parents violent behavior are 28.8%. These childhood 'experienced violence' and 'observed violence' was significantly associated early adulthood adaptation. But its effect is dependent on participant's sex. Experienced violence from mother is positively related to confidence in scholastic achievement in female. Experienced violence from father is positively related to trumatic symptoms and trait anxiety in male. On the other hand, observed violence showed significant relationship with traumatic symptoms, impulsivity, depression, self-esteem and trait anxiety. Most importantly, multiple regression analysis showed observed violence explains early adulthood adaptation more significantly than experienced violence. The discussion addressed implications of the findings for future research and for clinical practice.
